Phenomenal video Steve, appreciate you taking the time to do this. I think it's clear looking at the tin, that, at least in this alpha version, the world terrain DEM hasn't changed, I was hoping for more accuracy, measured in cm rather than m. At places where this is achieved, such as the Grand Canyon, the differences are emphatic. The lighting and 3D ground details are massively upgraded however. As someone primarily interested in flying to places and walking around in VR I can't go over how much better the ground details are. I love the trees, beaches, river banks etc. I think it's going to be easily worth £70 and will get better and better over time.

Speaking as a real world pilot, the airspeed fluctuations seem much more realistic which is incredibly important. Energy management is everything. The airspeed still fluctuates but not as sporadically and seems to “settle back to the mean” like irl.

I pre-ordered 2020 and I pre-ordered 2024. I will continue to support Asobo no matter what direction they go with flight simulation. I think a lot of us OG simmers forget the time when Aces Game Studio came to an end and FSX died. Then the pursuing struggle to work out the issues with P3D and hoping for something new. Asobo was a breath of fresh air and forever changed the landscape of flight simulation. They brought me 4 great years of pleasure with their software and this hobby, so I have faith they will continue to push the bar. Cheers!

The interesting things here for me were the trees and especially the water transparency at the shore - that was night and day different. I'd like to have seen a side-by-side looking at night lighting. On other streams the road traffic at night looks so much better with way more realistic head and tail lights. Still somewhat weird driving but again, the lighting engine makes a huge difference. As an example of "hang on it's tech alpha" - other streams I watched showed weather. My biggest gripe in 2020 is rain appearing to be inside the windshield or on a HUD even. I *believe* that is addressed in the new render engine but someone said that the 172 did not have water effects added yet so actually rain was not visible at all on the windshield. This is a useful video but clearly what was pushed out this weekend is a cut-down version so nowhere near definitive. The recent MS SDK stream made clear that for a plane to benefit from the new features these is a significant bit of work required by devs and that was confirmed by all the streamers dropping existing planes into the alpha's community folder. They appeared and sorta kinda worked but not really.... Let's be honest - we're all going to buy it whatever whining we do now :-)

Oh and just think...trees that look good even up close, live ship and boat traffic, improved weather (can't wait to see tornadoes), wildlife that roam around, and all the rest of the good stuff. So if i need to do another gpu upgrade, I won't hesitate to do so, no expenses spared. It's worth every cent for me as this is what i do, and the sky is calling.😀🛩️

Not sure why you guys are saying nothing will change before release, so what you are saying all the missing content will also be missing during full release? Yeah sure, it does not make sense, but anyway typical flight simulator community negative mentality. This was CLEARLY stated as a tech alpha, meaning they are testing the technical back end side of things. This was NOT a content or functional test alpha, so almost all new content was deliberately excluded.

I also hope the trees are all the right height and not overly large. Also I always thought the ocean water was too still and reflective, I hope that's not the case in FS2024. I definitely agree that the lighting and colors seem to be better in 2024, which is great. Something else that I hope isn't just my imagination is that 2024 appears to be displaying everything smoother than 2020, so less juttering as you fly. This is a major pain point for me when I fly in VR, since I don't want to reduce graphical settings and I can't seem to get rid of it in 2020.

I will also say that the rudder pedals in 2024 are WAY more realistic in my opinion. In 2020 I was not able to keep an aircraft strait on the runway because even a little rudder had a large effect on the plane. In 2024 the rudders seemed much easier to control the aircraft with very small corrective inputs.

Thanks Steve, did you upgrade the DLSS from v2.4 to 3.7 for this? I felt the performance was vastly better. Virtually no stutters, crisper visually. The Super Hornet model seems more weighty, it is not supersonic in dry thrust in real life like this is. I have flown backseat in a real classic Hornet and got to fly the trip, it's too pitchy on takeoff, flaperons are all wrong but roll rate isn't far off. I did alpha and beta on 2020, this is better at the equivalent point.

Dont forget, on a complex add on like the PMDG Boeings, the amount of behind the scenes physics and systems calculations also eat up the single thread calculations in 2020. Interesting video. After watching others, I don't share the same conclusions as you. You talk about updates here without mentioning the career mode and activities, which will add a lot of content to the game. Also, the comparison on London doesn't do MSFS 2024 justice since there aren't really any updates in that area. I hope the autogen will be implemented next year, though I doubt it. You should try to show us the evolutions across the season, fields, snow, extreme weather effects, to compare it with 2020. That would make the comparison more meaningful in my opinion.

RECOMMENDATION: The majority of humanity, besides being right-handed, also has a dominant right eye. Therefore, if you want to make it easier to view comparative content, the new content should be on the right side of the screen and not the left. Unless you want to make the comparison more difficult so that people looking back give you more video interactions, which will then be subtracted in the future because they will see other people's comparisons before going back to yours, looking to the left and having the left eye vision off the screen. Do what you want, but the recommendation is very legitimate...

8:50 Firstly - wow! My mouth actually fell open when you showed us the trees. But... something that I saw straight away with the motion is that the whole tree is stiff and moving like it's hinged at the base. Real trees bend like a fishing rod. If they're going for ultra realism it's things like that which ruin it.

I dont really think the comparison is doing 2024 justice visually. If you make full use of the updated weather and lighting system, for example, setting up more heaily clouded scenes interspered with light rays and wet conditions after rain, at sunset/sunrise, you are going to see a huge difference visually. I mean, 2020 is very good and particularly I dont think you'll see an enormous difference with the cities but for the landscapes, they've already said they have introduced much higher res satellite imagery plus accurate elevation maps.

I don't think you appreciate how much time that would take. In this scenario, I'm just using live weather, like I normally would. I'm not trying to make 2024 look any better, since that would be bias. I'm merely uisng both sims like I normally would. It's a fun comparison, nothing more, nothing less.

Its almost like gamers forget, don't care or ignore that devs happily sell back the same game again and again, look at the F1 games, MotoGP games, Forza games...... FSX to MSFS 2020 was a true huge leap, and this is nowhere near that leap, no where near, without doubt, it is the same game with a few tweaks here and there and some career mode that some will love and others will not care for like me. Each to their own for sure but people are kidding themselves...

FSX to FS2020 had to be that much of a leap. By 2020 FSX was 14 years old. We're talking about a 4 year difference. Compare FS2000 to FS2004. That's a fairer comparison. Also the difference is hopefully going to be loading times and a lack of stuttering as we won't be CPU bound by the main thread. In the first scene the resolution was noticeably higher and the graphics smoother. That to me is a significant improvement.

The eye-candy is great, but it's the flight modeling that will ultimately settle the sim vs game controversy. I'm really hoping for a closer to realistic aerodynamic responsiveness that makes chair flying with MSFS 2024 worthwhile between real-life flying.

I actually do appreciate a very early comparison with alpha vs 2020. There is a place for it, while yes, release version would be a fair comparison, i do love how youre showing what is available in just alpha and comparing it to 2020. I can make decisions on re-buying commercial flight sim peripherals based on whats in alpha ahead of time (sold all my peripherals to buy more combat oriented peripherals for dcs)

I found the level of detail in the London buildings and at Oban to be better in FS2024 and, as you note, the lighting is much better. Lighting in the alpine scene (Innsbruck?), on the other hand, seemed over-exposed and less detailed in 2024. Interesting to note the control panel on the F18 is more complete in FS2020; note the numpad under the HUD is missing in 2024. While we can't compare apples to apples because 2024 is an alpha, I do appreciate all the work you've put in to this snapshot of the current state of 2024. It will be interesting to see how future incarnations mature. Regarding REX Atmos, I think it's best that you keep the comparisons to "straight out of the box" 2020 and 2024.

side by side views are always the best for such comparisons. for the scenery of innsbruck, i think besides of the more details on the ground, the old one looks a bit more realistic compared to the real world. the 2024 version is too bright. i am already missing a brightness slider in 2020. so hope this is something which will be improved.

Love the casual Pilot with Aviator Glasses in the F/A 18 :D I do not think MSFS20 will die. It still delivers better fps while still being fine. To me, the Walking Aspect is really exciting. Trees/foliage even more. I'll test it on Gamepass when it's there and see. Also, i'll be interested in Performance. I'm running R7600+RX6800+32Gb 6000/CL30 in 3440x1440. I guess Upscaling and Framegen then. Since i have an old CV1 here that does not need that much GPU, i will look forward to it. Even, if it will be a bit blurry on my end with the CV1. Really need to get an old Reverg G2 V2. Thanks for the comparison. Both are fine, but MSFS24 looks interesting for me, as non aviation Expert and casual Flight Sim player that ids more interested in the simulation+virtual travel to look at stuff :D

Well for someone like me with a ~2017/2018 hardware set-up (i7-9800X, GTX1080Ti, 32GigsDDR4, dedicated MSFS2020 nvme SSD2TB) which was built with great financial struggle & effort, I am sorry I am not buying it. I don't see a reason to further drop my fps for something that is marginally more detailed vs MSFS2020 and that is already putting to stress a ~2022/2023 top level hardware. The colors in MSFS2020 are more vibrant (and imo blend better with the environment textures/meshes/3dobjects/clouds etc) but probably less realistic, whereas in 2024 are less vibrant (to the point I find them almost washed out but that is probably me being biased from using 2020 for so long) but with seasonal variations and more realistic vegetation, ie not so many trees and vegetation inside cities but I don't have a problem with that (it has already been addressed partially with official updates and some 3rd party addons in MSFS2020). I may buy it if I ever manage to build a new system with current top level hardware but that is going to be a different story for the not so near future unfortunately. I mean seriously people do you honestly think that the difference in visuals justify the difference ie increase in the hardware reqs in order to get similar & descent performance?? And to have to pay again full price to get it? Come on..

I've been playing games and sims for 40 years now. I must say 2024 looks wonderful. But. They all looked wonderful. Then proved to be full of disappointments and limitations. I've learned to tone down my enthusiasm and expectations. I no doubt will purchase this sim along with new controllers, more RAM and possibly a new Graphics card (currently 3070). I am going to love the graphical world but for me the most important is the flight model. If that is great then all will be good enough. If the scenery is as good as advertised, then all will be wonderful. Fingers crossed.
