Thanks for another thoughtful discussion! Really appreciate your channel. I’m from the upper Midwest like Joseph (Wisconsin though 🧀) and I’m 59, so Star Wars was one of the fandoms of my teens! I found ForceCenter through SWE and love hearing your perspectives on all things Star Wars. I am here for the buffet…or the ice cream parlor of Star Wars flavors.

This was such a great discussion. I never understood why there was so much hatred for the prequels, but with the sequels I understood a lot of what people didn't like. But I remember when I was watching The Last Jedi for the first time, there were things I loved and things I REALLY didn't like. And I had to think about it for a while afterwards when I was trying to decide if I liked it or not. I realized that I did like it despite it's flaws. Then I realized that was true of every Star Wars story that I like. They're all flawed in some way or another, but I like them anyway. I've come to realize that I love Star Wars BECAUSE of its flaws. It's what makes it fun, and so much more than just a story about wars in space.

What frustrates me most about Disney+ shows is the extremely short runtimes. Star Wars is huge, & when there’s an opportunity to experience it weekly, that is an event each week. When the episode runtime clocks in at less than 30m (excluding credits), it disappoints. Feel if the episodes were written to run for 45m-1h, we’d get more impactful, developed stories, & a phenomenal Star Wars experience! Amazing episode today!!

People forget that Attack of the Clones & Revenge of the Sith weren’t even the #1 movies of the year when they came out. The revisionist history around Star Wars being once being an unstoppable bulletproof franchise has created a convenient narrative.
@katakesh8566Ай бұрын
So .... Being labeled #1 by some committee and being "unstoppable" are two different arguments. Neither of which you really want to have. Star Wars is making about a billion in merchandise rn under Disney. And has been making that much roughly since acquiring Lucasfilm. Issue is Lucas was making roughly 4 times that much each year(adjusted for inflation), years after ROTS. Given the reception of the prequels by "fans". Disney had a wide open lay-up and somehow fumbled the bag. The brand that used to print money isn't printing money. Which is kinda impressive ngl

It's wild that the cynical jerk who wrote that article tried to accuse them of being creatively bankrupt and that "The Mandalorian and Grogu" will just be a long episode. It used to be that fans of a show would be losing their minds with the hopes that their favorite show could get a movie. Entire fan campaigns have been launched in that hope. Now, some of these journalists and critics are just so jaded and bitter, that no matter what, whatever gets done with a franchise/property, it's the wrong choice. It's so pathetic, the depths these people will go to to find something to be mad about.

Everyone has different ideas on what progress is. People do not understand nor are taught how to debates ideas constructively, but to lash out on social media instead. While there is some truth to what Jennifer said about a group of fans, most of us are just wanting entertainment. The movie industry is so focused on checking boxes for every group out there that it 42:20 loses its appeal. Most people don’t look for that to be entertained. The small group that does is loud and scary to the industry. It’s not the “white guys” driving the writing now. Variety is wonderful and it should be natural not forced. I loved Acolyte and Rings I had no idea of the goobers mad about any of it until I was already watching. It didn’t change my mind. The industry wants the drama and turmoil. It’s free advertising.

Admittedly, my first reaction to the superfan focus group announcement was, “Oh no!” Like many other commenters, I can see how this could go very wrong; for example, if it resulted in the studio demanding creators make wholesale plot changes to remove controversial ideas or characters. But you’ve talked me off my soapbox… or at least onto a lower tier. Using an infrastructure that already exists to make sure you are marketing a project appropriately? Smart business move. And picking people who know both the material and the fandom, so you can get out ahead of any controversy? Very considerate, very compassionate. However, I still think that studios need to hire more people with diverse perspectives at both the creative and managerial levels. Relying on fans to tell you what you should have already been doing is slapdash at best and dangerous at worst.

I think its a bit of an "investor day" issue. Disney has to keep the hype up for investors, which is a problem. I have long said Disney doesn't make Star Wars they just distribute it, but the lines are definitely blurred when these things crop up
@amaranthpaean22 сағат бұрын
And finally… I like Joseph’s suggestions for improvement on the Disney+ live action side. I think that investing in a show, a set of characters, and producing multiple seasons IS what they did with the New Republic era (“Mandoverse”). I am biased because I love BoBF, and I hope a second season of Ahsoka will sell you all on the show because it makes me sad to hear it criticized. But the pandemic, the actors’ and directors’ other commitments, untimely deaths… these all played a part in the disconnected feel of the Mando collection. Animation, on the other hand, can be produced way ahead of time and then queued up so it seems more like a traditional television schedule.

Kenobi, Acolyte, Book of Boba Fet, Rings of Power, House of the Dragon. I had to unsubscribe to too many channels because they continuously had a problem with the black actors and POC. Sometimes overt, but mostly subtle and using "lore" and "cannon" as a veil for rasism and sexism.

37:55 my thoughts exactly. I think Star Wars needs a break. For a multitude of reasons , most which you all discussed. But also because Star Wars scarcity has traditionally been part of what makes it special. Some time off would allow the next project to be evaluated on its own merits. At this point with continuous content being released regularly, it’s all falling into one amorphous blob that is viewed by many simply as “Disney Star Wars”. For better or worse.
@gbvraulАй бұрын
Holy crap, I love the way you guys discuss Star Wars. Yes there have been mistakes, but all in all we are in a golden age for the amount of great storytelling.
@YodatheHobbitАй бұрын
The Disney era? You mean since Star Tours in the 80s?
@amaranthpaean22 сағат бұрын
Yes, I enjoy fanfic, and have even read some of the stories in the fix-it category. I like imagining how things could have been if Anakin had gotten some therapy or at least listened to his better angels, if Ben had seen past Snoketine’s ooze and recognized the the good in his family legacy. But if the writer has a comment to the effect that Lucas or Disney or [insert other person involved] “ruined” or “broke” Star Wars? I’m out. Same with people who tell me why they didn’t like a show or movie and list of the ways it “should have” gone. I don’t have the energy or temperament to engage, so I just respond with a shrug and some variant of, “I’m sorry it didn’t work for you.” or “I try to engage with the story as it is presented to me.” or just an, “I loved it!” The latter works especially well for people going on an anti-woke tirade, like relatives. 😬

The buffet metaphor only works if the food is good. Personally, I don't want any of it if it's not gonna satisfy. Maybe I do like pasta and tacos, but that doesn't mean I'll like just any pasta or tacos. I haven't enjoyed a D+ Star Wars series since Mando S2.
@BobbyM817Ай бұрын
There’s still plenty of other Star Wats storytelling to enjoy like in the comics, books, video games, animated shows, etc… sorry you haven’t like any of the Disney+ shows! Art is subjective after all. As is food 😉
@jmorgan3977Ай бұрын
@@BobbyM817 oh trust me, I know art is subjective. I preach that very fact. But understandably, I can be bummed when I haven't enjoyed any of the recent live action Star Wars entertainment. Comics, animations, and games aren't quite the same.
@goodwolf152Ай бұрын
Disney era content has been very uneven, but from a narrative perspective, the main problem for me is that the originals were adult movies that kids and families could watch, while the new content is by and large FOR kids/families. Not strictly a Disney thing, though…that really started with the prequels, IMO. The best ones have deviated from that model (Andor, Mandalorian…even all the way back to Rogue One).
@starwarsrevealed204624 күн бұрын
Lucasfilm need to keep making the message of inclusively etc etc see Andors diverse cast BUT stop having creators PROMOTE that as being as important as the story. People don't like being preached to and then look for flaws in those people preaching.
@BlackRobin7128 күн бұрын
The problem isn’t that I can’t relate to a young female character. The problem is that the characters are paper thin and the story was make it up as you go. The sequel trilogy was such a wasted opportunity.

41:00 ok Center but that's not the point with Disney SW/era.... for sure nowdays there's network for fascists fans all around content. But what started this cultural war was bad writers who made a mediocre sequel for the most antecipated mythology return of our lifetime. Its not really about gender or race of our heroes, it was a nonsensical storyline that pushed tha rock downhill. And Lucasfilm took more than 10 years and STIIL not delivered a proper storytelling and exciting use of incredible characters.

Thanks to Ken, Joseph and Jennifer! 🛜 I think Disney is good at STAR WARS, but it can be way better. And if anyone watched the documentary THE IMAGINEERING STORY (2019), Disney is very good at figuring out what it takes to make something work. I hope they apply that skill to Lucasfilm projects.
