Obi-Wan Kenobi claimed to have never heard of him, and Mace Windu confirmed no Jedi of that name existed. The strongest argument to watching Star Wars in release order is: Episode 1's speed running at the beginning. If I saw that as my introduction to force powers... I'd spend the next 8.95 movies yelling at the screen wondering why the Jedi aren't constantly speed running around. Head cannon: Leia inadvertently uses force speed in the show Kenobi during all of her chase scenes.

To be fair Yoda could still have trained Obi-wan. We see him training a bunch of younglings in Attack of the Clones. Yoda could have trained him before he became Qui-gon's apprentice. So, what he told Luke is true... from a certain point of view.
