Falklands: How the Battle of Goose Green turned the tide

On 28 May 1982, Argentine troops were dug in around Goose Green and nearby Darwin in the Falkland Islands.
The Second Battalion, Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) advanced to find 1,200 Argentines dug in, waiting.
A fierce battle followed that lasted 14 hours, resulting in 47 Argentines and 17 British personnel losing their lives.

An argentine officer actually wanted to start killing hostages to stop the British from taking goose green but they couldn't because if they killed the hostages they would be decimated by the British

The book, “Not mentioned in Dispatches” is the most honest analysis of Goose Green. Jones’ orders were exceptionally complicated, and likely unachievable. The book lays out the orders, the confusion and the freedom of maneuver achieved once the plan was disregarded. I walked the ground at Goose Green with every surviving member of 2 Para still serving in 2001. The objective was extremely difficult and equally complicated by the complex orders gin to the battalion. I highly recommend the book if one is interested in a full understanding of both the successes and failures of that mission.

Sunray is a standard position name for any rank of commander. It means 'commander'. So a lieutenant or a general can be called sunray. This is a result of the UK fixed callsign system. For instance, the QM or equivalent logistics rank is 'squirrel'. There are many position callsigns.

The Gurkhas arrived too late to be involved in any battles... However the fact that they had been despatched to the Falklands was publicised by a Spanish language British radio station aimed at the Argentinian army that mixed entertainment with light propaganda. They spread all sorts of outlandish stories about the savagery of the Gurkhas and the Argentines appear to have believed everything they heard, which damaged their morale.

I recall the war, I was in high school, 10th grade. My one uncle was in the US Marine Corps during WW2, Korea and Vietnam. He watched the news every night just to see how the British Marines were doing. He felt as though they were like the cousins of the US Marines. When he heard about the charge against Goose green, he said “That’s it, this war is over. No one in Argentina can stop it now”! It’s like he felt the pride of that unit when their C.O. fell and how resolute they were when you take out a leader. At the time I didn’t understand what he meant. It wasn’t until I joined the Marine Corps in January of 1985, that I realized what he meant. The pride of being a small part of a unit, a part of something more important than yourself. To me, the real hero of Goose Green was Major Keeble. ...... Instead of going at it gung-ho, shedding the blood of his troops, Keeble took time to think, to meditate, and created a great idea, bluffing the Argentines - who greatly outnumbered them - to surrender. Brilliant! ...... A Thinking Soldier! This had always been my impression right from 1982, but it was strengthened through meeting a man claiming to have been Colonel H's bodyguard, and thus an eyewitness to the very circumstances of H's death. ...... What he said certainly stacked up. ...... As I understand it, H advanced alone across open ground, firing his SMG, and stopped to change magazines, standing like a target on a range - at close range. ...... A barn door. My impression is that H was so concerned the attack was stalling, he tunnel-visioned to the role of a badly-trained Lance-Corporal, and paid the price. ...... A Lieutenant-Colonel should be the overall commander of his entire battalion, not clearing trenches. H's VC action was a very human failing - desperation to get the attack under his command rolling forward - but not heroism in it's real sense. ...... Had H succeeded in clearing trenches, and had the battalion surged forward, taking all before it, then with many, many extra deaths and injuries to both sides, one could see it as heroism, but the barn door was hit, and fell, as was probable. Sergeant McKay's VC was heroism of the very highest order - the function for which the VC was intended.

@Darren Clapson Yes - the battalion took a fair number of casualties, and a VC eased their pain. ...... Had the Argentines been seasoned troops, I think their casualties would have been far higher. Given that Goose Green was a far higher nut to crack than anticipated, plus the lack of available support, or sufficient artillery and mortar ammo, Major Keeble could easily have drawn back, and demanded backup. ...... Getting the Argentines to surrender was pure genius on his part.

One of the worst things about being in the military is when you can plainly see politicians and the hierarchy setting you up to fail. When the hierarchy, that don't care too much about life preservation. Give out orders that trickle down to those you do worry about their lives. On a personal level you need to ask yourself if this is a worthy cause, or your lives are you being used as an expendable pawn. leaving those that love you to ask why. 🤔

Good that the shooting down of the Pucara by a Blowpipe missile was mentioned but it would have been nice if they guy had mentioned that it was a Royal Marine that fired it. Sadly the small contingent of Air Defence Troop Royal Marines seems to have been 'airbrushed' out of the battle in most accounts.

That's probably correct when it comes to most interviews recorded on television. But I would assume the RMs get the credit they deserve in the books written about the battle. "Goose Green: A Battle Is Fought to Be Won" by Mark Adkin is highly recommended.

Anyone in the Battalion who actually knew Jones knew that he was an intolerant! He prefered to do one thing at a time only. He either made very complicated plans, that could rarely be realistically followed, or he made no plans at all and verbally abused anyone who asked questions regarding what was going on. He verbally abused anyone who offered sensible suggestions. The action which killed him was born of frustration and impotent rage, it did not alter the battle in any way nor change a single thing in the slightest. He was shot in the back from an Argentinian position that he had run past and that he had not spotted. He absolutely did not deserve the VC for that action. The battle was won only by the calm delivery of intelligently applied force under the very capable leadership and direction of Chris Keeble, in concert with the aggression of young Toms channelled by excellent Corporals. That is the truth, that is what really happened. Endex !

Yup fought in less spectacular but equally brutal battles in Angola. I wasn’t at Cueto Carneval when a small South African force inflicted 4400 casualties on invading Cubans. We lost 36. Yanks Chester Crocker injected himself ($ short and day late) to allow Castro to retreat before our boys slaughtered even more. H Jones an awesome leader. My Lt Col Jan Hougaard never got this recognition.

This whole thing was dreadful stupidity and only the quality of the servicemen concerned alongside a gallant colonel saved us from disaster. At the outset defenders outnumbered attacker and defenders were reinforced part way through the battle. To attack a position it is rather important to outnumber the defenders, having less attackers then defenders and advancing onto a prepared position….I can say no more.

Have to give the British credit they had to do something and time was not on their side. They did lose a lot of ships and the Royal Air did a fantastic job with their Harriers and the Argentinean Air Force had a lot of good planes. I don’t think the Arginines ever knew just how small the British army was. I do think if the British had left they would have just came back way better equipped and with the correct numbers and the loss of life on both sides would have been high

As a Yank who watched the Falklands War as it transpired every night on our television screens, I was impressed by the bravery and resourcefulness of the Brits. But I couldn't help thinking that if we Yanks had been there, there wouldn't have been a week's long voyage by the Navy to retake it. We would have had two Carrier groups within days of the islands, and been there in no time. Still our British allies were commendable with their courage and fight! Plus, you could see that the Argies just didn't have their heart into it. As a side note, the QE2 stopped in Boston Harbor on the way home, and I was fortunate to visit her

Fair point, Eric, but our last Fleet Carrier was retired 3 years before and we relied on 2 much smaller decks. There was no comparison, then and our victory frightened the Soviets and ensured Cruise Missiles etc etc, in Britain and Regan's heroic face-down (with us) that ensured the end of Cold War One (we know what's next!).

Yes, Wideawake Airfield was built by the US, during WW2, but was a joint US/UK SIGINT base; the SAS had the Stinger missiles that you referred to and 3 SATCOM kits, but 81mm mortar rounds??

Gurkhas have indeed,shed river of blood and fought for free access the globe for the expansion and vested interest of the "British Empire". But when the war ended send me GURKHAS empty hand and bare feet back to Nepal. I am former Gurkha and a first Gulf war veteran,when I return from my duty,my British commander Col Shuttle Wood send me packing home back to Nepal. Without any notice and he also wrote very bad report on my AF108;Army certificate. We the GURKHAS have been facing Superior vs Inferior attitude during and after our service is the British army. Gurkhas are still facing family separation and barred from basic voting and human rights abuses 'etc UK government can find millions of pound to supply arms to Ukraine and Israel. But been penny pinching on the plight of the GURKHAS issues '. Staged two hunger strike and submitted another ultimatum letter to Rishi Shunak to stage 3rd mass hunger strike fast unto death and until the justice is done to the GURKHAS. No justice no peace! No justice no vote! Leveling up between pre and post July 97 British GURKHAS! Equal danger equal reward! Say NO to RACISM! Enough is enough! Support the GURKHAS! H Jones' actions was stupid. Brave, but still stupid. Charging a machine gun position is not the job of a battalion commander. His death did not save the lives of his men (trying to evacuate him actually caused more fatalities), nor did it change the outcome of the battle. The fact is that the OCs didn't have a high opinion of Jones. He was a hothead with a bad temper.

Why? It was a war and Goose Green served two valuable purposes, first and foremost it showed the Argentinians what was coming and must have hit their morale hard and, secondly, it prevented any counter attack from the well over 1000 troops they had based there.

All this nostalgia.......the country was in a Financial mess brought on by decades of miss spending, bailouts and helpful hands.(sound familar today)That when 1982 came by, they had to drag junk out of the scrap bin to use, they rushed the harrier into Service. If the argies had gone 6 months later they would have taken it. By that point the scrap would have been scrapped and winter would have set in down on the islands.

Those conscripts were well supplemented with professionals and held dug in positions on elevated hilly/rocky terrain with sited machine guns, mortars and artillery. Are you saying that the British soldiers, a lot of whom were also only teenagers, weren't also frightened? The British victory in the Falklands War was perhaps the most righteous victory in modern conflict.

Fun fact: In 1982 the British had only had 1 year in the previous 100 years where their forces hadn't been in combat somewhere around the world. The experience and training of professional soldiers won over a conscript army.

They had a similar standard infantry rifle, better night vision goggles, super sonic jets, highly sophisticated anti - ship missiles (Exocet), advanced AA capability (Roland/Grail), air-to-air missiles (Matra) and a host of other ordnance and armament. British soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines were fitter, stronger, braver. End of. Go cry a river.
