Ford nailed it this engine in my opinion. Really considering changing my LT1 with a 5.4L 2V. I am not a person who cares about Brand(Ford/Chevy), I care about engineering and specific designed things and the Modular Ford has everything I like. Love it even not even driving or working in one. Awesome video, simple and objective. I still need to study more about it, but so far I love it.

Nice video man! The best one I have seen yet. However, I have a question and I was hoping you can guide me in the right direction. I want to replace the head gaskets on my 1997 f150 4.6l. If I remove the heads using the cam tools and install the heads back exactly as removed, do I have to degree the cams? Thank you.
@MrMelvinkennedy12 жыл бұрын
No you wouldnt. The only important thing is making sure that the timing marks line up exactly how they came off or starting at tdc and going back that way so you can use new chains and there marks
@azizshavershian206510 ай бұрын
hey man great video - I'm about to do this job for the first time on my 2011 Crown Vic Police Interceptor. I watched a ton of videos and many say once you lock the cams with the cam locking tool to not rotate them again with the chain off, or it could mess up the timing. but then most videos end up rotating them slightly with the tool off, to line up the chain properly? little confused by this
@MrMelvinkennedy110 ай бұрын
Ok so to answer the question I will do so in 2 ways. 1 do not over rotate on a 2v motor. Slight rotate in either direction is fine. 2 the chain will have links as shown in this video and sometimes to get those lined up properly you have to rotate some one way or the other. Now if the cam is sitting on a lobe and lets say rotates violently to the left, don’t freak out because unless you put a ton of force on it by hand it shouldn’t bend the valves, just rotate it back toward your mark in the opposite direction of the way it spun. So if it spun 1/4 turn < that direction then turn it 1/4 back > direction so that your not rotating the cam 360 degrees in one direction which would result in bent valves on the 2v engine. Ps ive never owned a cam holding tool EVER for any engine but specifically ford

When swapping out the cams ( just cams nothing else) do you need to take the tension off the chain? If not will the timing jump? or is it just a simple popping off the cam bolt from the gear and swapping cams? Thanks in advance.
@MrMelvinkennedy13 жыл бұрын
If only swapping cams you need a timing wedge, wedge the chain so the bottom dont get out of time then mark the tops then you can remove cam bolt and cams, replace cams, put it back in time according to your marks then tighten the cam bolt and remove wedge. You can do 1 side at a time this way as well

@MrMelvinkennedy12 ай бұрын
@@TearItUpFixItTV if you removing the heads also the don’t worry about lining anything up until your going back together. Otherwise if it’s in good running condition line the crank up as showing in the pic and see where your marks are on the cams if it’s 180 out they will be the opposite of where they need to be but if the crank and cam marks line up like this video then your lined up

Nice work Melvin. Do you prefer the nylon or cast iron tensioners?
@MrMelvinkennedy1 Жыл бұрын
I would prefer cast but im not particularly against the nylon style in general. Ive seen both fail and ive seen both go 200k plus so its either in my opinion. I do like the idea of cast over plastic though for “toughness” aspect
@BlueOvalEdge Жыл бұрын
@@MrMelvinkennedy1 I tend to agree and I appreciate your insight. I have a 2001 Mustang GT that runs like a top but I am getting ready to do this job as preventative maintenance. Did you have any trouble removing the camshaft sprokets i.e., the cam's didn't try and rotate? I assumed that you used the camshaft holding tool. I am watching your other videos and you have some cool stuff.
@MrMelvinkennedy1 Жыл бұрын
@@BlueOvalEdge ive never used the cam tool, if you are at TDC already the cams should move very little and if so then rotate them back easy so you dont over rotate
@BlueOvalEdge Жыл бұрын
@@MrMelvinkennedy1 Interesting, so at TDC, you had no trouble removing the cam sprokets without the cams rotating? Keep up the good work buddy.
@MrMelvinkennedy1 Жыл бұрын
@@BlueOvalEdge yes Ive always been good with keeping cams from rotating however at times they will some you just have to rotate the back. If you are replacing the timing chain guides, tensioners etc… you should be fine with not removing the cam sprockets. They are typically in great shape however some go ahead and replace them while they are in there

How to add chain without marks? What’s the best way to mark a unmarked chain?
@MrMelvinkennedy12 жыл бұрын
Well if you are referring to reusing a chain then mark it with paint prior to removing it as long as it hasnt jumped. Otherwise I have not seen a new chain that wasnt marked yet. Some are just a lighter color that the other links which makes them harder to notice but otherwise never seen these chains with out marks

I just did a timing chain, guides, and cast tensioners on a 5.4 2v. Started right up, but there is vibration in the engine. No codes. Almost like most of the cylinders are missing. I am fairly confident I put the "tone" ring on correctly. I did see the front mark on it. Anything else I should look for that would cause these issues?
@MrMelvinkennedy13 жыл бұрын
Do you think you could have maybe got it a tooth off on timing ?
@MrMelvinkennedy13 жыл бұрын
Right off the bat there is a couple things id go over first. Make sure all the wiring is plugged in even if you think it is go back and check by putting your hand on every single sensor. Make sure there is no vac leaks
@danporter6433 жыл бұрын
@@MrMelvinkennedy1 thanks for the reply. I felt like I triple check the timing marks and colored chain links. I have gone over all the connectors several times and I have been searching for a vacuum leak but I can't pin point one. Plugs look lean.

dear LORD get rid of those plastic timing tensioners those things are EVIL. they don't have ratchets in them so during cold starts the timing chain runs slack and it eats into its guides until oil pressure reaches them which can take way too long when its cold out. The iron ones have ratchets in them so they stay tense even without oil pressure. also check your pan and pick up tube for plastic bits from the timing guides being carved into.
@MrMelvinkennedy13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. This is what i do for a living and the customers get what they pay for. Yes i always check for debris during any tear down. The plastic dont ratchet because they are spring loaded if i recall correctly so there is always a certain amount of tension even on cold starts.
@joshuamcpeek47083 жыл бұрын
@@MrMelvinkennedy1 ok sorry, it would seem I spoke from ignorance. also do you have any idea when ford started using plastic timing tensioner? Do you think my 99 grand marquis has them or are they iron?
@MrMelvinkennedy13 жыл бұрын
If im not mistaking ford never used plastic, the plastic is aftermarket. i would say yours if factory is not plastic. i dont recommend using aftermarket parts but i give the customers the price difference and more times than not against my advice they go aftermarket and warranty reflects that.
