The 4.6L & 5.4L are Great engines so long as you/the owner checks the oil level every couple of weeks, and don’t go an extended period of time without changing your oil filter! These motors are stout, but as anyone who has repaired them knows, the plastic timing chain tensioners are the most common failure in these engines if they have ran low on oil. And the plastics on the intake manifold are known to break around the thermostat & cooling Passover, but they fixed this design in 04 I believe. And lastly the infamous 3 threads of aluminium that hold your spark plugs in the cylinder head. (Also fixed in 04 by changing it to 8 threads) *specifically I’m dating the engines used in the mustang, so others like the f150 and CV may have gotten the improvements before or after the dates I mentioned, but just wanted to share my experience with the ford modular lol.

Who is here trying to rebuild there 2v?
@VincentSevenV74 жыл бұрын
hey bud I was wondering what you did and what you replaced. I got a official ford 2004 mustang gt manual from ebay and I got about 1300$ to buy parts. I might have a spun bearing not sure it is not even close to as loud or aggressive as what I hear on KZbin. I am going to do at the moment crank, new bearing, ring the pistons replace all the torque to yield bolts, lifters , chain and oil tensioner, all new gaskets, oil pump. I am not sure if I have enough money and I do get a discount, work at a honda shop and ford gives us discounts so I am hoping im in the area. the big thing is I dont want to machine the block and i am replacing the crank with a napa crank kit instead of turning mine wondering your cost, what parts you replaced, did you machine the block, how many miles before rebuild?

yee mine has low compression in a couple cylinders and the rest are way lower than spec. prolly valves or piston plus head gasket and some love. 4.6l 1999. how do you manually set the cam and valves with the piston?
@VincentSevenV74 жыл бұрын
@@bibojack1261 When I did it I put cylinder 1 top dead center, and used a cam holding tool to keep time. You don't need the tool cause the timing chains will have dots that you line up with your cam gears I just have the tool so why not. I never removed the cams to do the lifters because if the brackets that brakes that holds the cams the heads are pretty much done and can no longer be used, so be very careful. Most things on here are ether torque to yield or brake to match so it must go exactly as it came off. I hope I was able to answer your question. Just a clarification I am not a Ford Tech and not responsible if I forget to tell you something. I learned majority of this this stuff from 3 rebuilds this month not out of choice and a 2004 modular motor book that ford has got rid of cause the cars are no longer being worked on and they have a digital version for phones and computers with step by step instructions for people who don't know. Its not a haynes manual a OEM manual from ford that they use to teach.

Great video. While you have the engine out, and especially when you have the timing chain off, replace those old steel freeze plugs with good brass ones. I had the plugs behind the timing chain rust out, dumping copious quantities of coolant into the motor oil! Previous owners evidently didn't believe in anti-freeze, opting to run straight water. Several exposed freeze plugs were plugged with JB Weld.

Used to have a 99 gt with the pi 4.6 and a 4r70w Was always amazed at how it could run up hill in overdrive at barley over 1000rpm and still be smooth as hell Gm’s ls is honestly a better design but for the time period the 4.6 cane out it was honestly really good for something from fomoco Makes sense the Lincoln town car needs a smooth power plant and the 4.6 fit the bill like none other for the time
@WhoBallCain4 жыл бұрын
Jake The Snake ive owned cars with both a 2v pi and have experience with the ls6 and 6.0 vortecs and I still wouldn’t crap on the modular 4.6. Ford did really well for using ODB1 when it was introduced and created an engine architecture that they were able to use/tweak for quite some time. Its a good power plant. Not much power but improved NVH and emissions were the main targets. It did well for what they designed it for. Nearly a perfect fleet engine for the time and the type of vehicle they were fitted it. Nothing at all wrong with a 2v 4.6. Excellent engine as are the LS’s, but like you said two engines for two different purposes. Ps Understanding that modding the two engines are a complex and completely different beast, i would like to add that im mainly referring to completely stock engines as they came from the factory. I tend to never mess around much with any of my cars. If anything it would be a set of tires and brakes first.

I wonder where the 150 HP for the 5.0 came from in this video at 3:30 ? Early 90s Mustangs with the 5.0 made 225 horses with half the size of a 4.6, when i say size i mean physical size,if you ever wanna see something amazing look at a picture comparing both engine and their sizes,its crazy how big the 4.6 is!! I'm a old Ford guy and i have and currently own both versions 5.0 and 4.6, until i owned a 4.6 i never realized how good 5.0 engines (302) are,the 4.6s can jump timing (it has happened) they have the issue of the passenger head not getting enough coolant, the fiasco of the intake cracking,the issue of engines being built in different plants and being built differently,(lunacy right there) so if you have one and wanna put parts form the other you are screwed,yeah it can be done but its inconvenient,the issue of spark plugs blowing out of the heads, yeah 5.4 do it most but 4. 6s do it also, the list goes on and on. I have a Thunderbird with a 4.6 a and also a Mustang with the four six and another Mustang with the 5.0 , i love all 3 and not knocking the 4.6, just stating some facts, not something "i read" but things that have happened to me and to friends that also own it, what i like about the 4.6 is the smoothness of it,its not that hard to work on it and they will last a long time with proper care and they are hard as heck to blow a head gasket on them,this is a fact, not hearsay, i think the "torque to yield" bolts and the entire torquing sequence on the heads contributes to the head gasket being so resilient.
