Love the videos! Your stuff has helped me a lot. I had a bad experience with an aftermarket phaser after doing the full timing components replacement. I still had knocking and after chasing multiple VCT solenoids and taking everything back apart twice without finding anything wrong. I ordered a cam phaser lock out kit and when I went to install it in my brand new phasers I found that the new phase I had put on was internally damaged and actually missing a vane. Buy ford parts!

Question.. did you check the torque on the other phaser. if one was left loose the other could be loose.. how was the crank bolt torque.. did you return the part to the customer.. or do you still have it.. can you show the differences between the dorman and the Ford locating pins .. can you also show the proper way to torque the phaser on the cam. i am hoping that you fished around in the pan with a magnet wand to collect any metal bits to keep them out of the oil pump and install a magnetic drain plug.. when you used the impact to remove the bolt it did not seem to be tight.. i wonder also if the actuator was partially plugged.. if the reduction in flow allowed the phaser to hammer till it came loose.. the PIn into the cam and the 3 locating pins are for assembly ONLY. the torque of the bolt is what holds everything tight.. i see you have other videos on cam phaser knocking noise fix.. thanks for those..

I had one of these 3 valves come to my shop running on four cylinders with a left bank cam sensor code . I scoped the sensor found no signal pulled the sensor and found the tone wheel not spinning pulled the valve cover and cranked the engine the sprocket was spinning and the cam was not moving . The top quality Dorman phaser failed all the vanes inside broke up into chunks the bolt was tight. Dorman parts Suck been burned too many times.

I've only used a Dorman part once when I had to replace the intake manifold on my 2003 Towncar. It is fine so far and I'm not sure the OEM replacement at twice the price would have been better since the original already had the metal front runner update but the seal between the metal runner and the plastic failed which caused a small coolant leak causing a misfire on plug 5. I definitely wouldn't use Dorman for any internal repairs and like you, recommend factory parts even including filters etc.

This is a ford channel so I'm gonna get shit for saying this, but until they make these chain driven OHC v8's more robust and reliable, the cam-in-block pushrod design is better. The extra power and fuel economy of ohc isn't worth it.

Alex's Bikes and Motors they’ve been awful reliable man. The 5.4 just sucks and has a bad head design. The 4.6 on the other hand although not perfect is by far one of the most reliable engines made in the 21st century so far.

Ford needs to delete the chains all together and use timing gears. Way more reliable and dependable, not to mention the longevity of engine life. Oh wait reliable and dependable would get into the profit margins... Can't have that now can we? Just lost a 2v 4.6 with 130,000 miles on it due to this bullshit. Damn shamed too cause everything internal looked textbook. Still has the cross hash marks in the cylinder walls. Smh

hey dude, if you have particles in the oil, the motor is shot, its not being trapped in the oil filter and that shit is embedding in the main and rod bearings, pretty soon the oil pressure will drop and the motor is junk even if you tear the engine apart, and re size the crank, by a machine shop, the pistons and cylinder walls will be scuffed, which means a bore job for over size pistons, but the bottom line is you will never get all that crap out of the motor, even if you have it professionally hot tanked and de greased, in the long run its better to buy a short block from a proven shop that knows what they are doing

Shouldn't a properly seat phaser last as least as long as Ford? (excluding Dorman faulty phasers). Ford Parts have a 2 year warranty, some aftermarket phasers coming out with a 3 year and cost well under 100 bucks. Ford parts known to fail. Is it really extremely crucial? Us tight pocketed folk need to know if we are getting what we pay for. Is it the steel, the mechanism? Diving too deep into a dumb question but huge price discrepancy.

When I put in my new phasers a couple of years ago, everyone across the country was back ordered on the Ford. So since there was no info on when they would be available I went with the Dorman. One of them has something wrong with it and has the sensors reading they are out of time with each other. Runs ok and wouldn't be a terrible hassle if I didn't have to have it smog tested this year and because of that code it won't pass. So I'll have to change them out again. I was able to go with the Ford solenoids.

I had a similar noise but didn't think it was so bad since I have taken it to the dealer for service at every oil change. They told me nothing. So today I cranked up to leave to come home it was a little louder. I was about a quarter mile from home when it sounded like something exploded and sounded like glass. It lost almost all power and would nearly die if I didn't press the gas. Do you think that the phaser exploded and failed? If so in your opinion is the motor toast since I drove it home?

and a thousand dollars later, it's good to go. looks like the inside of the phaser was not flush with the end of the camshaft. improperly machined OR improperly torqued. this is a very common problem on fords. sounds like a bad wrist pin or piston slap. good job of searching it out.

Nice job on all your videos...luv them and they are super helpful for me. I have a question regarding the cam journal/shaft replacement. I have been following your timing chaining replacement series and when I inspected the cam shaft I identified that the locating pin hole for the phasers was a little marred up - not as bad as in this video but.... I order a new cam shaft and plan on replacing it. My question is, should I also replace the roller followers as well...they appear to be in good condition. My vehicle is a 2005 Ford F150

If you will order the phaser lock kit with the provided scan tool it comes with you can lock the phaser's into place and turn the VVT off on the 5.4L 3V. Runs better, no more phaser issues. I will agree that some aftermarket phasers are junk. We sell aftermarket phasers where I work. If you used the Dorman XD series phasers we have had no issues with. If you use the cheap value line ones, they won't last more then 6 months. But the best fix is to eliminate it.

I will never understand why Ford produced an engine with overhead cams that would never rev much past 5000 rpm as most mod motors do.. A pushrod engine can easily do that with much less complexity and that explains why GM built the LS with pushrods when it also had the option of choosing overhead cams during the design phase. The Coyote engine can rev much higher than the run of the mill mod motors so it can justify the added cost and parts count needed for a 4 valve engine. All the tensioners and chain guides and such hardware are too many extra parts that can break, and they do quite a lot.

Heyyo Mike! You can turn any engine to crap with shoddy maintenance. What you CANT DO in your 6.2L is make it go as fast as a Coyote with just a tune. Such trucks these days are going in the 12's everyday. I'll give you the $400 I spend on a tune if you can make a GM 6.2L do that time.

I have a 5.4 3v engine after watching some of these videos I realized I had the famous startup rattle and the rough idle caused by the vct solenoids every since I had bought the truck 2 years ago and I didn't realize it until recently. Before we were going to dig into the engine a Ford mechanic that is a friend of ours recommended before we start digging in to check the camshaft caps for scoring and sure enough the caps as well as the camshaft are scored and now I am told I just need a new engine all together, what would my best engine option be (Ford re manufactured, jasper, or machine shop) and how difficult would it be to pull an engine since I can't seem to find any instructions online at all thanks!

The concept of not buying cheap aftermarket parts may be true. However the fact the 5.4L 3-valve engine develops these problems so early is a travesty!! I have a neighbor that is on his third engine in his F-150 in the last seven years should set off alarms about the design and engineering of the engine. NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU WORK AND HOW MUCH MONEY YOU SPEND, ITS HARD TO MAKE A BAD DESIGN GOOD.

I have a 5.4 3v triton. I have the following error that occurs after warming up p0390 electrical circuit of the B CMP sensor (bank 2) and p0394. I tried replacing the camshaft sensor, but it didn't work. Phase synchronization is successful, what are your tips?

Man, I just finished rebuilding a 2005 f150 5.4 3v. Freeze plug came out behind the front engine cover and filled the block with coolant. I bout the truck with the engine full of water. Just got finished buttoning everything up. Honestly I'm scared to start it. It's got new rod and main bearings, pistons, valve seals, head gaskets, timing chain, tensioners, guids, and lord knows what else. I've triple checked everything twice. Oh, new cams too. I'm trying to figure out a way to prime the oil pump without turning over the engine. Finger crossed

I have a 2008 f350 6.8lt v10.. had just a tick sound on the passenger rear and the mechanic said it was just a broken exhaust manifold bolt (exhaust leak) but new tick showed up in the front passenger side and it almost sounds like its in the pulley area.. Just want to do a whole timing chain. phaser kit.. Can't find an OEM anywhere.. ? All kinds of 5.4 kits but no 6.8?? any links to where those might be found? Thanks

The phaser was probably improperly installed IMO that’s why it’s broken I’m sure the bolt was either impacted on and broke something from it being forced to move that’s what I’d guess

I have a 05 f150 with 5.4 3v it is running really rough missing out and got a knock to it but I’m not getting any engine codes. I’m afraid the engine might be shot but without codes or the proper scanner I may have to do some exploring starting with the timing chain and phasers. I would like to shoot u a clip of how it’s running. I may try to record the process and load it on KZbin but we will see I’m not really set up for that. I can use my phone I guess. Any thoughts? I know you use a certain scan tool and I may have to buy another one. I’m an southern Indiana resident.
