I have a 2008 Ford Expedition. I was blessed to have come across your page on KZbin to better educate me on this motor. You REALLY helped me out. I spent a while looking places up, took your advice on a lot of things to look at for at dealerships so I drove to Orlando to get the roller followers, camshafts (if needed) and timing done. I was going to get the updated oil pump too. In Miami I was quoted 4,500 and in Orlando I was quoted $2,700, both at Ford dealerships…Orlando being the cheapest. Once the tech looked at the truck I was told I have metal shavings in my oil filter and said that I need a new motor because the motor is eating itself from the inside out. They did not open the motor at all. I requested prior to coming up here that I wanted to see whatever the tech finds but there was no communication. Now I am headed back to Miami to another dealership for a second opinion. I sure wish I was near Chicago brother, you would definitely done my motor over/replaced it. It’s so hard finding people that’ll do it right! Thanks for all those videos my friend. Any advice will help out.
@FordTechMakuloco2 жыл бұрын
As long as the engine oil was maintained you will be ok with just a timing job. Fine metal in the filter would be the result of the chain hitting the front cover like they all do, no big deal. $2,700 sounds way too low like they are not replacing everything, $4,500 sounds right for a dealer. I even charge $3,500 to $4k with all the extras as an independent.

Mark, I quit fighting to get each individual rocker fished out. I remove the camshaft. The cam phaser more than likely needs to replaced as a regular maintenance item anyway. Great video thanks! I missed the "very important part" about pushing as you compress the spring. A bit of stomach in the throat moment when I saw a keeper fall as I lifted out the rocker. Luckily the tool had shifted a bit and the spring was pushing the valve sideways preventing it from falling into the cylinder. With some strong magnets, a little pry to center the top, I managed to get it all back together, released the tension to make sure the keepers were seated and then recompressed it to put the new rocker in.

I am doing a timing chain, cam phaser job with new lifters and roller rockers. I had a huge problem trying to remove the old followers on some of the cylinders following your guidance. I ended up having to remove the cam shafts to get them all out. I though maybe the chain had slipped and caused the cam lobes to be too far from the base circle to get them out and I didnt want too risk popping off keepers or other damage. After following all your steps for timing chain and phaser replacement will all Ford parts and having replaced all the lifters before reinstalling the cams, I then started to reinstall the followers and once again was having difficulty putting them in. Finally after struggling through 3 of them I inspected the genuine OTC 6684 tool that I had purchased from a defunct Ford Dealership selling off tools, I found that the part that pushes the valve down was bent! It wasnt real obvious but it was enough to only allow the valve to be depressed partially. So I carefully straightened out the tool and it was like magic. All those follower went in with no trouble. Just goes to show how careful you are to do it right some things just go wrong. Im just happy to have it resolved. I will be done with the job tommorrow. Im 68 years old and a retired Ford Tech, but I havent done major engine work for decades as I specialized in electrical/electronics/AC/ etc. Thanks for all your great videos and guidance.

I thought of removing my front wheel and maybe coming in from the side. The cowling is there as well so hopefully does not get in the way. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. John

Yes, u definitely don't want to pop those rollers out with anything else because you will bend a valve. Always use this tool to install the rollers. Good job!

Since there are so many rockers and lash adjusters to do would it be easier to pull the cams and change them or would the rockers be flopping around in the way while you try to reset the cams? I was checking mine the other day and half the rockers on bank one wiggle around a little…

So I can put the rocker arms back in any order as long as the lobes are pointing up and the rounds are down? I have Engine TDC #1 Cyl with chains straddling timing marks on phaser and crankshaft sprocket. I am extremely nervous at this point since I am not a mechanic and have never fixed anything this complex and intrusive into an engine.

Would you recommend switching to 5w30 for 100k and over . Also when doing this do you have to re time the timing chain ?

Question...? 🤔 With the crank shaft and cam shafts in the neutral position, couldn't I install all the followers minus the 6 followers I took out then spin the engine one and a half more times to reinstall the other 6 followers?

For full 5.4 3v. Where do you get components without worrying about counterfeit or after market, true ford parts ?

Hello how much time would it take for roller followers. Also if I have 160 k shoul I just buy a timing kit too with the locking cams

And if compression makes it difficult to turn the crank manually, just remove the spark plugs. Oh, wait.

Dude your the best you showed how to do it without removal of head or engine. This saves us big I’m eyeing 1 2008 f150 fx4 with the 5.4 I think I’ll buy it it’s at 1800 with out the auction fees. I’m not scared no more.

I own a 2007 F150 5.4L 3v Triton and have been watching and learning a lot about these engines. I have applied the techniques from your videos with great success! On this particular video about the roller followers, I clicked on the link you posted for the latest roller followers on amazon to get a price and I am told that this part does not fit my 07. I have not heard any tapping or ticking from my 5.4 but am considering on changing the followers before it does start to make noise. Is this for sure the latest and greatest part or is there something better? I want to keep this truck for a good long time. I bought it two years ago with 74000 miles on it and it is running strong at 102000. Any input, Thanks!

I'm guessing there is a reason not to just remove the camshaft, I can see doing it that way to just do 1 or 2, but it seemed like a real pain in the rear and a lot of fiddling around to get that one out.

Is there any answer to this? Also can ya place followers then bolt cam in place?🤷🏻♂️

Another great video Brian....with these update roller followers and their smaller oiling holes, would you still recommend using/changing to 5W30 oil? Do you think it will cause any issues?

+Ben Grigsby I would use 5w-30 no matter what

If you are going to replace all rockers and timing component kit, can you just loosen the cams and replace them all before installing the front kit?
@danieltaylor97615 жыл бұрын
Questions? 1. I always learned when changine a roller or cam--you change both. Why are you just changing the rollers? 2. Getting the follower out, why not just loosen the cam? 3. If you are worried about dropping valve.why not putting air in the cylinder to make sure? Is this engine a non interference engine? With the lobe staight up I can a poor mechanic punching a piston with your fancy tool? Again, why not just loosen the cam hold downs?

I have 256K miles, never been open. Should I remove the heads and do valves?

So just got done with putting the oem timing kit in everything is timed as it should be but I’m at the point of putting the followers back in but the cam lope is at the bottom if I turn the crankshaft is it going to be out of time or now that everything is on is it good. Just wondering because I have some followers on already so if it presses down on those valves is it going to put it out of time.
@FordTechMakuloco3 жыл бұрын
No, once the engine is timed it is timed, turn as you wish at this point.

What'll happen if you just unbolt the cams caps-reove the cams,then the followers? I need to do my timing chains and this part is kinda scaring me........
@OngoGablogian-ku8xn2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for everything Brian, when reinstalling I should just start with all of the lobes at base circle 6 o’clock on the crank hub then rotate to the next group? No issues with piston position and fully opened valves?

If I pulled all of the roller followers from front to back after pulling the first sets shown in timing replace videos did I damage the valves? They all came out with the tool. About to reinstall but just found this video a bit late.

I bought a 2005 f150 Lariat with 136k miles that was in great shape, but had a misfire when I test drove it and also a tick. I first did the spark plugs and coils and found all but 2 were loose and one had the end broke off. It drove better but still didn’t have power and felt like it was still misfiring and ticking . I then decided to change all the roller followers and lash adapters. I took the valve covers off and found my problem, it was a roller follower locked up and the cam had been just grinding away on it on the right side of my engine. After replacing my cam, roller followers, and lash adapters my truck runs like new. I couldn’t have done it without your amazing videos!

Hello I watched part 1-4 for the 5.4 3v timing chain replacement now for the roller followers can I use after market and if yes do you recommend any brand
@chrisgraham29042 жыл бұрын
I assume the roller followers fail when the needle rollers in the bearing wear and fail. Have Ford's newest roller followers been re-engineered to resolve this issue? ... or are the newest roller followers destine to fail in the future, just as the originals did?
@eformance3 жыл бұрын
What's your recommendation on replacing the lash adjusters when replacing the rockers? I have 6.8 3v that I need to do all the followers on and I was planning to just reuse the lash adjusters. Unless the adjuster is collapsed or obviously damaged, I don't see a point in replacing them -- unless there is some tribal knowledge indicating otherwise.
