Ford 5000 Alternator Conversion, Detailed Install

When I did my conversion, I pulled out the voltage regulator entirely and I've actually put a fuse panel in that location so all the circuits on my tractor are now fused. I had so many bad wires that it wasn't worth "fixing". One headlight worked on occasion. So, I ripped out all the wiring. Points were replaced with a Pertronix ignition. This allowed a straight 12v run from the key to the coil. Replaced the starter with a gear reduction. This provides more torque in the cold for easier starts in the winter. The bonus was being able to connect the start position on the key directly to the starter. No more solenoid. Battery cables were replaced with 4 gauge. I did have my alternator pulley replaced with one 1/2 inch smaller. This not only allows the alternator to tuck under the hood, and it runs at a higher RPM which excites it sooner. The rest of the tractor was easy to wire. One circuit for the existing headlight switch which powers the tail light and dash backlight on the first click and then adds the headlights on the second. One circuit runs to the key for the ignition. One circuit runs to my work lights mounted on all 4 corners of my canopy. Final circuit runs to the strobes. Wiring the dash isn't hard. Just take care as you remove stuff to understand how it was wired. All the lights from headlights to strobes are LED now. Even the backlights of the dash (I did have to preserve, clean, and integrate the original sockets to make that work) and the original taillight are all LED. The walkaround on my channel is a couple years old, so the mods to the alternator and the gear reduction starter are not in it, but you can see how I did the fuse box. Turn the bottom bolt around so nut thread is under the alternator.🇬🇧🇮🇪

I think I mentioned it in the video, but then again maybe I didn't. I tried that, but there wasn't enough clearance between the alternator bracket and the radiator/fan shroud to put the bolt in from that direction. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I know it hasn’t been on there too long, but how has the tach cable held up? I tried re-running it’s original path and I think the sharp bend coming out of alternator caused it too break. Have it sitting apart now, was concerned about running it past the exhaust. Thanks!

Good Morning Fred, So far the Tach cable has held up just fine. I've only put maybe 6-8 hrs on the tractor since the conversion, but everything is working well so far. Only problem is that a mouse chewed through one of my brand new wires! Thanks for the comment!
