It’s hard to believe that Ron is gone. Great mechanic. Truly miss him. The good lord was having trouble with his power-stroke and he needed the best. RIP

I miss you Ron. You were, and thankfully, due to you sharing your life with us here on KZbin, still are, the #1 expert in this field. Thank you so much, for opening your life, your knowledge and your expertise with us. When I heard of your passing, I cried. I still do shed a tear when I watch your videos, and I sincerely wish I had the chance to meet you. You're genuine, your highly knowledgeable and to many of us, a true legend. You explained things to us simple hobbiests, which we never would have known.. you explained stuff in a way nobody else can or will. You simplified it, so those of us who know how gasoline combustion engines work, would have a better understanding into the strange world of these weird diesel engines... You're the one I have to thank every time I work on my truck, for the small amount of knowledge I have. You touched so many of us, and even though you don't know us, you made friends out of tens of thousands of complete strangers to you. Thanks to you, I know what stiction is, I know how injectors work. I know how oil pressure is directly related to the perfect timing of fuel injectors.. thanks to you, I know how critical certain things are inside of my engine, what to look for in a diesel engine, where leaks are, and how they can cause fatal havoc inside of diesel engines.. how the diesel engine is much more finely tuned than anything gasoline.. How simple things, can look catastrophic but so easy to fix. You've shared so much and I will never have the chance to say thank you, but you've made my life better, just because you opened up a tiny bit of knowledge and shared your life with us. I will never be able to share my gratitude . I donated a bit of money to your family and left a simple comment under your family's fundme, but that was just so menial compared to what you taught us all. When it comes to diesel tech, you and only you were the one who enlightened many of us, and made us realize how complex, yet simple these critters are. Thanks so much Ron, and your family. When I saw your son discussing what happened to you, I sobbed. Here I am, a grown man, father of 3, and now a grandfather, and I wept, like a little girl when I heard of your passing. Whenever I turn the key to my Ford and hear that diesel kick to life and clickity clatter , I have thought of you. Till we meet again Ron, we still have your videos and your unmatched knowledge and for that I'm thankful.

You know an engine is well designed when you need a special tool that took years to design just to pull the EGR valve.

Has Ford ever fixed or published a TSB for this problem? It's one thing to require a service of a major emission part, but for them to potentially break and require replacement raises questions. If I recall correctly, all manufacturer's are required to ensure emissions equipment operates properly for at least 5 years or "x" amount of miles. Here in Canada, I believe the law is 5 yrs and unlimited kilometers.

Most diesel mechanics are real uptight they don't like sharing information. And some are cool guys and will give some of their valuable time to give you advice or will share all the stuff they know.

Ron, Great video. I like that you showed one breaking and what to do about it if it does. Might want to recommend an Allen socket in the end of the alignment rods to ensure they are seated correctly. Just a thought. Regards, John

The Bully Dog tuner will NOT work with an EGR delete. It pretends that everything is fine as you go through the install, but the second time you try to start the engine, it locks you out and wont let the engine start. Don't waste your time!

I have found it easier to just buy the part the EGR valve attaches and replace it and not try to remove the EGR valve.

DieselTechRon - I am trying to determine if I have an internal EGR cooler leak on my 6.4. With the 6.0 I see that people will pull the EGR valve and look inside for residue left behind by the coolant. Do you have any other tips for diagnosing an INTERNAL leak from an EGR cooler? Thanks man!

Seams like the most fool proof way of making sure the studs are all the same height would be to measure how far they stick out of the puller plate once its bolted on the EGR valve. With them all seated, find the tallest one and unscrew the others until they are all the same height. I'd also check the depth of the pockets in the top plate that the studs fit in and make sure they are the same. If they are different you'd have to adjust the stud heights to compensate for the differences in its pocket depths. Carb cleaner dissolves carbon, has anyone tried using it to help free the valve up on the way out? If it gets stuck on the way out, I'd back the puller nut off and tap the valve back in and spray more cleaner/penetrant and then start back out. Repeat as necessary until it comes out. Good luck guys!

One other thing can happen using this tool. I had the 3 smaller screws rip the threads out of the egr valve. The other tool available uses hooks to grab the egr valve and may do a better job. I guess my egr valve was really stuck. I had to buy a new housing.

what does it smell like? The EGR coolers usually do not fail on the 03. is it missing? Is it using coolant? do you know if your temperatures are correct such as in the oil and coolant Temps not being more than 20 degrees apart with the early style oil cooler or 15 degrees apart with the redesigned one?
