For those confused on the terminology, the probe installed in the manifold is called a thermocouple. The thermocouple measures exhaust gas temperature (EGT) displayed on a gauge called a pyrometer. In other words, a pyrometer reads EGTs from a thermocouple. Pre-turbo readouts for most diesel cars and trucks should stay below 1,250 degrees Fahrenheit sustained temperatures because aluminum parts like pistons can start to melt. A few seconds at hundreds of degrees above that temperature during brief, hard pulls should not be hot enough for long enough to create permanent heat related damage. One sign of an engine with sustained EGTs being too high is if the inner rim of a piston bowl has lost the sharpness of that edge and has started to become sloped or rounded. On non-dual ball bearing turbos, a diesel engine is not supposed to be shut down until a pyrometer is displaying EGTs of 350 degrees or cooler because engine oil still that hot will coke and gradually destroy the turbo. Dual ball bearing turbos continue spinning and slightly circulating the hot oil but are still susceptible to the problem. Other turbos stop when the engine stops so the hot oil has no further movement and the heat cannot disperse. On diesel trucks, EGTs most need to be monitored when temperatures are staying over 1,200 degrees like when ascending hills while towing heavy loads, and to know when it is safe to shut down the engine.

Great informative video content! Thanks for explaining the install process & why monitoring your EGT temperature. I was new to Diesel engines when I bought my truck. She was my first Diesel engine! I had a big learning curve to say the least, Lol! Thanks for all you do making your videos and I look forward to seeing more of your videos soon!

Excellent video! We always use Tap Magic when tapping threads, use a shop vac against the drilled hole and then again against the tapped hole to clean out the shavings, and use Permatex Copper anti-seize on the threads. Hope this helps someone - we're all in this together!!

Have you towed heavy with your truck since this video? Wondering what your egts are with your mods. My 2000 is stock with a K&N type open filter and Hydra tuner. Egts towing 15000 plus lbs are crazy high, even on a 25 hp tow tune. Hoping a better CAI and full 4 inch exhaust will drop egts. As of now I really can't even tow heavy without egts hitting 1200 to 1300 degrees. My Cummins truck I had never had much of an issue with egts, this Powerstroke is a nightmare as far as egts go.
@LivingOnWheels
@LivingOnWheels 3 жыл бұрын
I towed heavy ish a few times with my final setup and it performed phenomenal. Towed 12k back from Idaho going through threw some mountains and I only once barely got it to touch 1200*. I would def get rid of the K&N although I don’t think that’s your EGT issue. The exhaust might help a little. I’m guessing you aren’t running custom tubing from someone? I would highly recommend switching to custom tunes from Jelibuilt or 1023. If I had to guess I’d bet your EGT issues are in the tuning your running.

@@LivingOnWheels thanks for that, maybe tuning alright. Probably going to get a S&B Cai, with a paper filter and full 4 inch exhaust. Then maybe different tuning, don't know who's tuning is on there now, pretty sure the tuning we got right off the Hydra website. Got like 10 or 13 different tunes. Just a bit afraid to put money into this truck and still be disappointed.
