Great video . I never had the pleasure of working on Ford Transmissions . This C4 seems somewhat similar to a powerglide case layout . I am somewhat surprised the bellhousing is removable . Thanks again, Nick .

Hey Nick, I've watched all of your 4L60E playlist that pertain to the rebuild process and I'm about to rebuild my stock 2004 Trailblazer LS with 4.2L engine and RWD. I know you say you always replace the boost valve with a Sonnax one. Sonnax has one for early pump style and late pump style but they never say what years those pertain too. Even googling, I couldn't find the answer, only endless videos about the differences. Would you know off the top of your head which boost valve I would need? I'm trying to order one to have it shipped in time to already have it when I open the transmission up. I'm excited to see you put up this C4 Playlist as well as the AOD playlist, because my next project will be a C4 to AOD swap that will need a rebuild on a 65 mustang if all goes well with my current project. Thanks for all of your hard work. Your videos are great! I'm setting up a TV in my garage just to have your videos guiding me through the process as I work. I'll be pointing anyone I know that is trying their hand at rebuilding a transmission to your channel.

Hi @asp5167 - Thank you for the kind words! You should have an early style/first design boost valve in your 4L60E - they didn't switch to the late style until 2006, I believe. But to be sure, simply drop the pan and remove the existing boost valve so you know what's been installed for sure. Alternatively, if you end up buying the Sonnax HP1 Performance Pack, it will come with a 2nd design boost valve and boost valve washer that enables you to install that 2nd design valve in your 2004 pump, if it takes a first design boost valve.

@@nickstransmissions Thanks man, The rebuild kit I bought comes with a transgo SK 4L60E Shift kit, Corvette Servo and the three accumulator pistons but no boost valve. Otherwise the HP1 performance pack probably would have been the way to go. At least I can change things around in the valve body later without pulling the whole transmission. I think I'll pick up the Line Pressure Booster Kit 4L60E-LB1 for early style. My transmission is actually still fully functional, it just has138,000 miles. I sometimes do cross country road trips and I don't want to have something go wrong on this 20 year old transmission in a small town in the middle of nowhere, so it seems prudent to rebuild it now on my own terms. I also got the upgraded sprag, Sonnax HD sunshell, and the pump hard parts kit. I'll be checking my clearances on the pump. Maybe I'll be able to see another 138,000 miles with it. The vehicle only has 275HP/275Torque so it should have a fighting chance with these upgrades. I never have the peddle to the floor either.

Hey Nick, when I pulled apart this c4, the reverse high clutch had 4 clutches and 5 steels with one of the steels against the pressure plate. I removed the extra steel and installed 4 new soaked clutches, my clearance is .120” and the book calls for .025”-.050”. Have you ever seen reverse high drum with a steel up against a pressure plate? Thanks Nick!
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 3 ай бұрын
Hi Stephen, I've seen similar but usually the steels are double-stacked if someone put an extra one it to meet clearance...There are selective snap rings as well as thicker flat steels that you can install in place of the factory spec steels to tighten up the clearance as measured.
@stephensalinas4301
@stephensalinas4301 3 ай бұрын
@@nickstransmissions thanks for reply Nick! With the extra steel against the pressure plate my clearance is perfect at .030”. Would it be suitable to double stack two steels then? Going behind a very mild 302 in an older bronco, if that matters ?
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 3 ай бұрын
Honestly, I don't see a problem with the double stacking of two flat steels, as long as you have a clutch disc between those steels and the backing plate...GM's TH200-4R overdrive clutch uses the following factory stack up: flat steel, friction, flat steel, flat steel, friction, backing plate.

Never heard of them called green dot, but I did hear drive left and drive right. Drive left was 2 speeds, drive right was 3 speeds. The dot next to neutral was left. That was the dumbest thing I ever heard of, a lot of the Ford trans had trouble with starting in 2nd because the governor liked to stick on them. An old trick was to use a steel check ball inside the gov valve, the one with the spring plate, not the one with the snap ring.
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 2 ай бұрын
Yea, was a retarded configuration...Thank you for the check ball in the gov tip - will try that if/when I get one of those real early units in...
@monkeywrenchization

@@nickstransmissions That ball trick works on a C6 too. Ford had a good idea by returning the cooler to the rear of the case, and lube from rear. Hydromatic always had the cooler lines side by side, taking the hot oil, and returning back to same hot spot. The 4L80 was the only one to return oil to center support.
