If you're reusing the clutch you have to reset it - so that it goes far enough down to install the snap ring

If you don't relock it, you'll have the pressure plate splines resting on the release bearing in their extended state and you won't get he clutch deep enough into the transmission.

How about a duel clutchñ ? Do u have to reset it and also would it make the shifter not shift or go into aortf ?

Fortechmskuloco is very good. But for the transmissions, I like Ben better. More casual, but just as informative if not more so. Also, Ben is very nice and helpful, if you have questions. Great guy. Deserves more likes and subscribers!!!

Good work Bigben, very good video, very useful. I changed my forks A and B and since then the gears no longer shifted after reassembling everything, or the engine moved violently when I put it in Drive. I didn't know that you had to reset the front clutch and then unlock it before reassembling everything. my Ford Ecosport had been parked for 1 month and this video allowed me to adjust everything and I was even able to drive without having to relearn the TCM. Thank you so much

before I choose, new clutch or tool to reset old clutch. in your experience. how often do you see these clutchs are ever bad? I have a broken release bearing (slave cylinder, bearing) what ever we choose to call it, either way, obviously I'm in it but don't want to dump a lot of $$$ in this project over budget as is, auction cost high,, just replaced engine. now clutch sticking so its a mess..appreciate your input and time making helpful videos

Usually the clutches just shudder. If you don't want shudder I would replace it. otherwise no major problems typically. Blow all the dust out of it. Sometimes they don't reset properly, i've got a video showing how to pull it down with a ratchet strap

Thank you for the content, very helpful and appreciated. Have you ever seen a dual clutch that the outer clutch (3 tabs) resets fine but the inner clutch (12 tabs) I am only able to get a little more than half into the holes they go in? From what I can tell the tabs and holes are not lining up exactly. It is a new spare clutch so I will continue to monkey around with it and see if I can get them all into the holes.

I'm glad it helped! Yes it's very common for a used clutch to not fully lock. Actually, it's more common for them not to lock once they get a lot of miles on them (50k) you can keep trying, maybe try a press.

Hey Ben I broke one of those aluminum tabs that hold the clutch on top so I only have 2 out of 3 able to lock on the clutch locking mechanism for that clutch . The lower clutch is fully locked no issues . Brand new clutch pack. Would this cause issues if any once properly seated and installed into the casing? I stopped working on this car after that tab broke and am started to feel like the clutch only needs to be locked for installation purposes ?

@ you’re a live saver man I feel like I owe you one big time! So I have the transmission in my living room I went to unlock the clutch after seating it “properly “ and right as I went counterclock wise 10 times on actuactor b the clutch popped up .. I was going to continue but when I removed the outer ring and the center hub then removed clutch I realized that the snap ring came off .. I’m assuming I did not seat it properly and could have went down a little further … next time I’ll trust my instincts and bang one more time !

When the clutch is released, do both disks engage the pressure plates and lock? I can't spin mine unless I remove the inner shaft spline disk. I watched other videos with the clutch install and they spin freely with the clutch disk spinning too. I am not sure if the trans slipping into a gear or not while working on it, but if I remove the spline disk I can see the inner shaft rotate opposite of the clutch.

I don’t know what I am doing wrong, this is the second clutch I have mess up. I am having trouble with setting the second part of the clutch some of pins did not go in the hole, I ensure that the tool lines up with the all the pins, however some of the pins did not go in the hole. Could I be tightening the tool too much? How can I release all of them and start all over? Or do I have to buy and new clutch again ? Thanks in advance

@truck282 hi, there's no spec with Ford on that. Personally, I've never seen one get thin. But I would replace the clutch every 100 to 125k miles during a transmission job. That way you won't have shudder for a couple years

Ben, When reinstalling the clutch or installing a new clutch, does the order the clutches are unlocked matter? If it does, what would be the outcome if the clutches were unlocked in reverse? I’m still getting a P087 and P287A after replacing the clutch, forks, and shift motors. Ford refused now for the second time to replace the TCM. They are telling me my new clutch is bad, or was not installed correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I’m at my wits end with this one. 2014 focus SE with K00 TCM.

Ben, Thanks so much for the reply. I was getting the P087 and P287A initially before doing anything. I’ve watched all of your videos related to this transmission. I took this to ford and they told me it needed a clutch, but before doing that, I replaced the B shift motor. Before replacing, I was failing the clutch travel test. After replacement, it passed the clutch travel test and drive well for about 10 miles. Then it started falling out of gear when trying to shift into overdrive at highway speeds. Once I got it home, it wouldn’t go into reverse. I replaced the clutch, forks, and both shift motors. Before ever starting it, I ran the tests with forscan and this time got a “clutch travel ERR” rather than “clutch travel test failure”. I tried disconnecting the battery and resetting, but nothing worked. Took it back to ford and they are telling me for the second time it’s NOT the TCM. I’ve swapped the shift motors, ran the forks in and out by hand. The codes never clear. After watching your video, it seems it can only be the TCM at this point. Can you tell me if I’ve missed anything? Wiring harness looks good, battery voltage is good. There’s lots of clicking coming from the transmission when you turn the key on before starting. Sounds the the TCM motors are freaking out. Any advise you can give me is greatly appreciated!

Ben, I got my focus back from the dealer yesterday. They did not replace the TCM. After getting it back, I had 2 codes. Still had the P087 and now a P0702. Ran the clutch system test in for scan and still got a “clutch travel test ERR”. Here is what I did: Pulled shift motor B and left it connected to harness but hanging out of transmission. Ran the clutch system test again. Got same error. Placed a small zip tie around the shift motor gear. I did this to see if the motor was moving any during the test. I ran the test again, this time it failed the reference point check. The zip tie flew off, confirming the motor is getting power and actuated. Re installed the shift motor and ran clutch test again. All tests passed. Ran shift drum and self learn clutch point tests. All successful. Drive the car 40 miles so far with no problems. Seems that the clutch position sensor inside the shift motor needed to be re calibrated. Or the TCM needed to re calibrate by forcing the reference point test to fail. Not 100% sure but just wanted to share this with everyone. Thanks!

Do you have info as to how to know if clutch is reusable once you take trans off instead of replacing ? (2016 focus se 90k miles, Super dusty trans locking up fork b causing slave cylinder to break, replaced clave cylinder and cleaned forks with air and fork now releases with ease)

Hi, due to the extend of damage, I recommend replacement of the clutch. Unless you don't smell burnt clutch odor. Theb blow air and use some brake cleaner to clean the clutch

What do you look for qc wise in a used clutch? I know you can't really measure the thickness or really visually inspect the pads on the friction disc

Hey Ben - issue I'm having is when seating the clutch it goes down and the notch for the ring shows and I stop. When I release pressure the clutch moves up so the groove goes away. It's like something is pushing the clutch up. It's a new kit and when I installed the forks I released the even gear fork. Could that be it? Can it be locked again?

@sluggowonder hi, yeah it sounds as if your clutch wasn't locked to begin with. Was it an oem luk kit? If so that's odd, you can message the seller and try to get another, or buy the tools in this video to lock the clutch for install. I've also got a video for installing the clutch unlocked, but it's a little sketchy

@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Thx for the response. I got the reset tool today and its reset now. I compared it to the old clutch and the secondary clutch (even gears) were still locked. What i'm wondering is since I took the safety clips off the forks and did the 14 spins if thats what the problem is. From what I can tell the post the z washers hang off of is seated correctly. What Im missing is like an extra 1/8th inch for the groove for the snap ring to fit into. I thought about putting the snap ring under the socket thingy with the gap to see the groove but im afraid that wont spread apart then slide down the side till it snaps in place and damage the ring. Watched your vids as well as others and no one has really covered what the forks do other than the 14 counterclockwise to activate. Im wondering if since i already activated them thats the issue. Thx again for your help.

@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Hey Ben - Sorry to bother you again. Got the clutch and snap ring on. Now the issue is the clutch moves smoothly until i put the hub on then it wont spin. My understanding from Maculoco is that it should. any quick suggestions? Thx again!

What happens if clutch are not unlock and installed inside transmission. The reason I mention I did one recently and now 2nd gear won’t work. I did about 10 turn ish. Thought was enough but it did hear them unlock. Forscan is failing my clutch travel test hence not able to do adaptive learn.

Do you have to reset the clutch if it isnt removed from the gearbox? As im going to fit a used unit and the clutch pack wasnt removed from the gearbox

I'll try this out and make a video in the near future. It may be possible if you sit the transmission (with the clutch sat on) onto a press and compress the clutch, then install the snap ring

With the release tool, turn counter clockwise 14 times each clutch. I've got videos on how
