Replacing Ford E-150 van upper and lower ball joints. This video shows a step by step procedure for replacing both the front suspension upper and lower ball joints along with brake rotors and pads on a 2010 Ford Econoline E-150 van with coil spring front suspension. Additionally we provide an overview of necessary tools, equipment and parts required to complete this job along with manufacturer torque specifications. This procedure is comparable to most other Econoline models including E-250 and E-350 two wheel drive vans from year models 1999-2014.

This was extremely helpful. And entertaining. I watched this video several times before replacing the ball joints on my E-150 six years ago and became confident enough to successfully tackle the project. Today, I'm replacing driver's side again (maybe I should have bought higher quality ball joints the first time) and watched again to refresh my memory. I needed it. If not just for figuring out which cups of the ball joint kit to use for which purposes. Thanks!

+Michael Rubinstein In areas where there is rust they tend to rust out and fall off sometimes. Or someone didn't put it back. I know it helps keep road debris out of the brakes and maybe helps cool the rotor but probably wouldn't make a noticeable difference without it there. Thanks for stopping by!

Did you get back to set the Caster/camber sleeve and replace the nut on the upper ball joint?
@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Robertson The caster and camber were ok after the parts were replaced. The collar should stay in its original position unless it needs to be replaced with an offset unit for alignment angle correction. The collars do not come with the replacement ball joints and shouldn't require replacement unless damaged or for alignment angle correction. Hope this helps. I see in the video I failed to explain any of that. Sometimes you only find out after taking measurements with an alignment machine before knowing if an offset bushing needs to be installed for adjustment. It's usually not difficult to replace at that time but it wouldn't hurt removing it when you had the knuckle off and applying some lubricant to aid in replacement if it was needed. If you decide to do that just be sure to mark the position of the original before removing in case it is an adjustable one so that it can be oriented properly and angles preserved. Good luck!

I just have a couple natural gas unit heaters and they cost about a million dollars a month to run. Haha.

I'm thinking about doing the ball joints on my 97' E-150. The video makes it look pretty easy. I have the tools, and can borrow the press kit from Advance. I wonder if I can complete the job in one day or less? It looks like the only "hard part" is removing the steering knuckle and pressing the old ball joints out, and then the new ones back in. I'm a little nervous about getting stuck in the middle of the job.... What "can go wrong"?

Thanks Doc, I ended up calling around and found a place that only wants $90 per side for labor, which sounds great to me. The 1st shop wanted $475 parts, labor, & alignment, which made me consider DIY. So, now I don't have to worry about Mr. Murphy (he can be an SOB sometimes!) Btw, I picked up the ball joints from Rock Auto for $28, instead of $18 each from Advance or NAPA. Thanks again for the great videos. Good luck on the hunt. Hope you fill the freezer.

+Glenn R. In a friends truck,after full reassembly,it was noted that the ball joint stud spindle was spinning in the knuckle when turning the wheel.Not tight enough,this will fail the ball joint stud and break it.Note the enclosed part warnings against fretted or worn tapers in the steering knuckle.He was able to tighten it properly later.Also follow the sequence of installing the proper ball joint ,it was top or bottom first,or you cannot put the other one in!

Hey Tim, great job... your videos are awesome! Hopefully a quick question for ya. I replaced the ball joints (upper and lower) on the 1994 E-150 about 20K miles ago and when I recently took it in for an alignment they are telling me that the upper ball joint is bad. Is this possible in such a short amount of time? When I get the van back from them today I'm going to give it the shake test and if I do need to replace the ball joints I'll also be replacing the tie rods as well. Oh and when I did the ball joints 20K ago I also did the inner and outer wheel bearings on both sides. Thanks in advance! :-)
@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Persons Well I hate to say it but I have seen that with low quality parts being used. Just make sure the studs are properly torqued and it isn't just a problem with the original install and they just need torqued properly. Also if that is the case make sure there isn't a problem with the actual arm or knuckle causing the play. If the movement is in the joint itself then consider using a quality part like Moog. Good luck and thanks for dropping by!

+The Car Doctor Thanks Tim.... I think I used Duralast for the uppers and Valuecraft for the lowers (what I could find at AutoZone). I'm going to find a local Moog vendor this time. Also, I need to replace my rotors as well. What brand do you recommend? Oh and where did you get the wheel bearing hammer press? Last time I did my vans (1994 E150) wheel bearings I took the rotors to a machine shop and they charged me $10 a rotor to remove the old ones and put in the new ones. I didn't know the tool you used exists! :-)

The grease press is a handy tool for greasing the bearings but you can do this by hand if needed. I'm sure there are videos showing this process. I also used a seal remover tool to pry out the old seal in order to remove the bearings from the rotor hub. I think that's what you were asking about but if not let me know. Good luck!

+The Car Doctor Yes... thanks Tim! I found a bearing driver and grease press at Harbour Freight at a decent price. I also have another couple questions for you. I just received my new ball joints, rotors and wheel bearings. I assume I reuse the bearing seals from the old rotors? Or would you recommend buying new ones? Also, my wheel bearings came with a metal sleeve around them that I didn't see in your video. I assume that's to protect the bearings while in the box and not part of the install, right?

+The Car Doctor I just watched the video again and answered the question about the seals... so I'll be buying some new seals! I also see the sleeve on the outer bearing.... but my inner bearings came new with a sleeve as well.... won't fit in the back of the hub with that sleeve so I assume it's safe to chuck it out? Oh and in the video you removed the old wheel bearing and seal by putting the nut back on the axle and yanking out and down on the old rotor. Since I have all new rotors, bearings and seals I probably can just skip that step.

This guy's a good comedian, and a good tech! How much did you charge for the work on this van for parts and labor?
@ThecardoctorTV

+interstategar I think including the alignment it was about 700-800 (and that's no joke) :)

The Car Doctor That's a descent price. Keep up the good work. I fished once in Alaska in a fly in camping location on the Alaskan Peninsula. Caught fresh run silver salmon. It was great fishing. They were readily taking number 5 Mepps spinners. The grizzly bears loved that spot too. We had to scare them off with gun shots.

Yikes, no thanks. You should have been on Kodiak with me this fall. One of our hunters had his deer taken away by an angry bear as he tried to skin it out. Not cool.

The Car Doctor I'll be watching your channel for more Ford van videos. I have 2012 E350 extended, 5.4L flex fuel I use for expediting freight long distance and I drive about 90k miles per year, so my maintenance comes up quicker than the average person. I'm a contractor for Fedex Custom Critical.

When did they start using 8 lugs on a E150? I always thought they were 6 lug hubs. Awesome video. I think I can do this. Just missing the press to remove and install the ball joints. What is this tool called and is it usefull on more than just ford ball joints?
@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 8 жыл бұрын
+The Plow Guys it's called a ball joint press and it's used on many makes and models. You can get them from Amazon for under $100.

I meant like what brand would be good. I looked on Amazon and found some but people would complain that they would bend or something of the like making the tool useless. -John

Since when does a e150 have a 8 bolt wheel pattern? Hate when ppl think we’re idiots. Next time tell the truth. Not a bad video tho.

I have a question, if it took you an hours to replace one side...and mechanics charge $90hr, that would be, let's say $200 in labor. Why did the shop by my place quote me $900? Where does the other $700 come from? The parts can't cost that much. Are you just basically gonna get screwed by a large margin every time you use a mechanic?
@ThecardoctorTV
@ThecardoctorTV 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t think of it as being screwed as you say. It takes an average mechanic with average tools and equipment much longer to do the job. A tech with more experience and better equipment and tools can do it faster but at a cost to the tech in additional cost and lifetime of experience. Would you feel better paying a slower guy the same money than one who was practiced and had a well organized equipped shop? Or watch the video and do it yourself and save even more! Thank you for watching.

Also I would say the actual time was about two hours per side plus alignment.
