I have a 5.4 2wd swapped successfully into 4x4 but gosh I feel your frustration, ordered wrong parts from stupid ebay IDs too. now Im doing the same S of a 2wd 7.3l.

So i’ve been researching swapping a 2wd to 4wd and was wondering if i would have to drop the trans to change the output shaft or if i’d be able to just take everything off while it’s still in the truck and swap the output shafts? i noticed y’all had the trans out and on its front so i was just wondering

The output shaft is held on from a C-clip inside the transmission case. It's one of the last things to come of unfortunately.

Snap ring pliers, from the inside of the transmission. The tail shaft is one of the last things to come out, after everything else comes out. I got a video somewhere on here, on the 4R100, where we tore it down. I don't know if we actually filmed the snap ring or not. Sometimes a long pair of needle nose and a long sharp flat head will do the job, better than snap ring pliers. But you gotta have some long arms, cause you're going cave diving. You have limited space to work with. Removing that snap ring is probably the hardest part about taking a 4R100 apart. Putting the snap ring back on is easy.

Eh you know if you can convert a e4od 2wd to a 4wd

Yes, you can. You need a short output shaft and a 4x4 tailshaft/transfer case combo.

@@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284ok so I have a small block bolt pattern e4od 4wd and a big block 2wd e4od so I would have to switch the internals and tail end over to the big block to make the big block 4wd ?

@@dylansmith3628 So what you want to do is take a 460 E4OD and make it 4x4 from a 5.0 4x4 E4OD? I don't see why you can't switch the internals... Do a little bit more research, I would. They also may vary slightly from year to year. It sounds like you just need the transfer case and the output shaft from the little block trans and the rest of the internals from the big trans. should be put right back into the big case after the output shaft is changed. Count your bolts, pay attention to your patterns. Everything should be the same except the bellhousing bolt pattern.

Yes it’s a 1991 4wd and a 1990 460 2wd can’t find 4wd transmission for a 460 to have your self these days lol and thanks

First problem was buying anything like that from eBay all this stuff is knock off junk

Yes, at the time it was hard to locate a new old stock Ford OEM shaft. Today, you probably can't get them anymore unless they're reconditioned, or from a junkyard. I doubt there are any dealership warehouses out there. The rule of thumb is, they keep auto parts for 10 years. By now, it's probably less time.
