UPDATE as of DECEMBER 14,2022
Ford is now claiming that they are not responsible for taxes or shipping costs in the refund. has anyone dealt with this. Seems Ford is doing whatever they can to not pay even under the service bulletin. To date I have only received half of the cost as a refund!
UPDATE as of DECEMBER 2, 2022.
As per the service bulletin listed below - Ford has approved my refund IN FULL.
Please if this has affected you, reach out to your local Ford dealer (even if you have already had the repair performed)
UPDATE as of NOV 10, 2022.
Thank you again to the individual who brought this to our attention.
It appears that Ford is now offering a one-time replacement of these engines at no charge and extending the warranty on the 1.5 Eco boost to 7 years or 84,000 miles. If the vehicle has already exceeded either the time or mileage limits, this no-cost, one-time repair will
last through November 30, 2022. Also if you have had the repair done already, you have until NOVEMBER 30, 2022 to make a claim!
Here is the link to the service bulletin: static.nhtsa.g...
Also, check-out the "Ford Boss Me" video explaining the service bulletin. This guy is very knowledgeable when it comes to Ford vehicles: • PSA!! 1.5L Ecoboost Co...
Good Luck all!!!
Hi all,
I’m sharing this video today to explain a terrible product Ford puts out these days.
As mentioned in my video this will be my last Ford.
The way they treat their customers is terrible.
If this has happened to you, please contact Lief Cabraser Hermann & Bernstein law firm as they are handling the class action lawsuit. Let’s get the word out in hope we can get reimbursed for this.

If you think toyota handles boost thats funny, theres a reason why ford and toyota use to use mostly only NA engines, its because they actually had a chance to make it past the warranty period and when they did they switched to all these turbo motors knowing it would kill the engines faster, aka making money replacing motors every 50k is more worthy then making a engine that a customer could be happy with. Car companies use to warranty engines for 100k miles/ 10 yrs but now their all mostly 3/4 yrs and 36,000-48,000 miles. Hmm makes ya think 🤔

Thanks for the video. I was looking at the newer Ford Escapes with 1.5L engines. I do not like what I'm seeing. I'm not a fan of these smaller Eco boost engines but my current 2013 Ford Escape with 1.6L engine has 143,500 miles on it and still running strong. It overheated once last summer (2022) when a small hose coming from the back of the engine to the coolant tank broke and lost most of the coolant. I replaced that hose and it's been running fine. The only other thing I did is replaced the valve cover gasket at 138K miles a few months ago. It can still pull hard when you step on the gas. I hate to part with it but I'm not sure how much longer it will last. So, I'm in the market for a new commuter vehicle. I just do not trust the small 3-cylinder engines. My 2009 F-150 with a V-8 is as solid as ever with no issues. Because of that, I'm sticking with Ford.
@ATSNorthernMI
@ATSNorthernMI Жыл бұрын
It seems that the engineering team just didn't know what each other were doing and assumed botching and adding things to the original design somehow made it better. I'm sure they had nothing there before and had sleeves cracking and then decided to cut a slit in the block to help get coolant between the sleeves which fixed the cracking but then introduced head gasket failure. To remedy that, they drilled a hole into the sleeve between the cylinders in question and I'm sure this is going to cause clogs within the coolant system that will plug the passages leading to the cracking issue. These are all open deck engines because of the power these small packages can produce, causes more heat and pressure from boost. I would be afraid to put a tune of these engines to make a lot of power. Older honda's used this design but you could boost a stock motor so high, it produces upwards of 6 to 700hp and do it all day long but a stock ford ecoboost can't even do its factory rated power without blowing out.

Y'all folks are SO obtuse about who is responsible at Ford. Try the "bean counters" that CONTROL the purse strings, not the engineers who are just DOING THEIR JOBS. This is the way American industry works. Good example is Briggs & Stratton, they USED to make "bullet proof" engines, NOW they use PLASTIC camshafts. This is NOW the AMERICAN WAY of manufacturing! Planned obsolescence so you keep buying NEW every 3 or 4 yrs!!

Hondas didn't had direct injection for a long time. Or turbos. When they introduced them their engines started to fail. In the classic setup of wannabe american racer, you can just dump half a tank of gas in each cylinder to cool it. You don't care about emissions or fuel consumption ... you want to spit flames to prove Americans can't win any race that lasts more then 5 minutes. At 5 and 30 seconds the pistons are on the tarmac and it's ok cos the gas tank is empty anyway. The proof that drugs are a problem in US is you randomly recommend the 90s aspirated engines in a car that's made two decades later. Cos the 1.5 turbo Honda that is same year as this Ford is probably Fiat level of engine reliability. Ford messed it up here but so did many. Including Honda. My advice is don't buy first generation of a product. Any product. Wait for second generation let the suckers do the testing with their own money and time and buy later

When Ford refused to intervene with my local dealership over a faulty oxygen sensor that I complained about from the get-go on a Ranger pickup, I swore off Fords forever. When I bought the POS, I wanted to buy American and buy local, both decisions I regret greatly. The new vehicle purchase offered free oil changes every 3,000 miles. The vehicle would lose power at highway speeds and I complained about the issue at every oil change. The morons in the shop would take it up the 35mph road behind the dealershipand return telling me there was no problem. I repeated the complaint at every oil change with the same lousy lip service. The problem got so bad I had to limp the vehicle home at 35mph from 200 miles away on a Labor day weekend. Again, gee, no problems here. Lo and behold on my 16th oil change or 51,000, the heavens opened and allowed the service department to recognize a bad oxygen sensor. They then, rather than apologizing for being too stupid to diagnose a simple problem much earlier, spat in my face with a $72 charge because my warranty expired at 50,000 miles despite my repeated complaining since the purchase. I called Ford and rather than admonish the dealership or offer to refund the charge merely did more lip service and told me they regretted that that dealership acted that way. Ford is a very stupid company that relies on pigheaded generations of Ford buying families to stay in business. See those slick multimillion dollar commercials they run all the time? Imagine losing a first time buyer of a new Ford over 72 freaking dollars. The vehicle was a lemon, the $2,000 Mitsubishi transmission failed like clockwork every 60,000 miles (60 and 120 thousand miles for me and 180 thousand miles after a friend bought it from me). Now I bash Ford every chance I get. You'd have to be an imbicile to limit your car buying to American manufacturers that continue to behave this way.

I left the business in 2018 mainly due to Ford’s absolutely poor product designs, starting around 2013 or so. I did want to say, I cannot believe, with only 22k miles and only 3 weeks out of factory power train, Ford refused to at least work with you on a repair. As I said, I was in the business for over 15 years and have seen Ford make MANY “after warranty adjustments” on vehicles that were way more out of warranty than what yours is. Hey - wrong service bulletin- look at TSB 22-2134. You should be covered. The warranty was extended to 7 years or 84,000miles for all 2017-2019 escapes with this engine. Should get it all covered.

Good for you getting Ford to owe up to their responsibility. I had a 2013 Ford Escape SEL with 84,000 miles and Ford sent me a notice about a transmission issue they would fix for free, had no transmission issue so I let them fix whatever the recall notice relating to the transmission. Afterwards, I got a ENGINE OVERHEAT-SHUT OFF ENGINE indication in RED light. Took back to Ford dealer and now I was informed the car has a "composite engine failure" and this is not covered under warranty. Sold the car for what I paid for it.....$2,500 . I have two older F150's with no problems, with one approaching 250,000 miles(2008 F150). Some days Ford makes a goodie like your Explorer and a "DUD" like the Ford Escape....

The entire ecoboost lineup has some sort of major flaws, that's what you get when you try and push big power with a small engine. All cars in general made after 2008 took a steep nosedive in quality, my 2010 Ford Fusion (2.5L 6spd manual) with only 90K KM (6oK miles) is full of gremlins, never know what it's gonna do next.

I have a 2013 Fusion, Ford "facelifted" the Fusion in 2010 and apparently it was different enough from earlier models to "confuse" assembly line workers. My 13 Fusion is the same thing, majorly new, mostly reliable but for random electrical faults. Occasionally the lighting for the dashboard buttons "flares" and they couldn't seem to get the radio and CD player to work. One will work and not the other. Fix the broken one and the "good" one stops working. Also problems syncing my phone.

It's not the small engine that's the issue. It's the design flaws and lack of afterthought by the engineers. The eco boost is turbo charging gone wrong.

I had the same problem over one cylinder (Quebec, Canada) last year. I had just a little over 70k miles on it. Ford actually changed the engine because it was a "waranty extension" as the tech told me. Took over a month to fix because of parts missing. Been a Ford Escape guy for the last 15 years, my 3L V6 was a tank compared to this. Yep it was hard on fuel, but it kept me out of trouble for 10 years till it was rusted through. I can tell you, I'll keep this one till it dies (still over one year to pay it out) and I'm done. Enough with Ford. My dad bought Fords for almost his entire life, but not more than 3 years and he was changing them for a new one. I'm the kind who likes to keep his cars long enough to pay them and getba couple of years payments free. I'll buy a chevy or even a RAM before I'll buy another Ford.

Sadly it is not just the Ecoboost engines and Ford that have SERIOUS problems. ALL, and I do mean ALL, late model engines and transmissions have SERIOUS problems, some worse than others, but all VERY serious. The last decent engines that Ford made were the 4.6L 2 valve V8s and 3.8L 2 valve V6s. DO NOT buy a car that has a turbocharger, supercharger, variable valve timing, any kind of cylinder deactivation system, engine stop/start system, direct injection, or ANY vehicle with a CVT "transmission", or an automatic transmission with a ridiculous number of speeds, like the 10 speed transmission currently used by both Ford and GM. These are ALL SERIOUS design problems and will result in catastrophic engine/transmission failures. It is pointless to replace or repair these engines/transmissions, as their design problems will just cause them to fail again at very low mileage. Specifically with the 1.5L, 1.6L, 2.0L, and 2.3L Ecoboost engines, the issue with coolant getting into the cylinders is NOT the only problem. There are over a dozen serious design problems with these engines. Even without a catastrophic failure, these engines are very short lived. They tend to lose compression due to a loss of ring seal at very low mileage. They are seriously overstressed and simply wear out fast.

I have seen this kind of story from Ford for 40 years. I spent my entire working life as a mechanic, this kind crap is nothing new for Ford. Look at the Diesel history for example, the 6.0 and 6.4 both go down in history as the poorest diesel engines in history. Then Ford designs it's own diesel the 6.7 and they actually do a decent job except for slapping on a Bosch CP4.2 High Pressure Fuel Pump. The pump is known to fail and will take the entire fuel system with it costing the owner over $12k to fix. From spark plugs blowing out of heads, 5.4 3 valve V8's failing due to sludge, Eco Boost Carbon in the intake system, Focus Dual Clutch Transmissions, Transmissions in general, timing chain driven water pumps that fail and take out the engine with no advanced warning, you name it. But every now and then Ford will make a decent product. Are you willing to spend your money on a Ford? Believe me both GM and Chrysler have serious issues also but Ford takes it to a whole new level. You will never see the blue oval in my garage.

The 2.0L had the same problem and Ford knew about it but hoped that the engine would last long enough to make it to the end of the warranty before the customer had a catastrophic engine failure. I'm done with Ford too. Here's the kicker, I live in Detroit and my whole family has worked for the big three in some fashion or another so we always bought American branded cars. Not anymore, the American companies have shot themselves in the foot too many times and most of us are done with them. I'd be willing to bet that Ford and GM are bribing congress with untold riches to keep the Chinese out of the US for as long as possible because if the Chinese EV cars get imported into North America, it's all over for Ford and GM - well the GM that we are familiar with, not the GM already owned by China.

I have an Edge with the V6, beautiful engine. I am not aware of water pump problems, our local dealer says they do two to three a year. The real problem is that it is VERY expensive to replace as its positioned internally and driven by the cam chains, so it's a major teardown. About $2K. Juxtaposition that to our old Pontiac van. Wheel off, cover off, pump out, new in and we're done. $200 and I'm doing the work.

@@TheOzthewiz By "leaking internally' I take it you mean (as these are vane pumps) a loss of flow rate. This will cause the engine to overheat and it will shut down. Ford 2012+ is hit or miss. Certain engines in certain models are awful (such as the 1.5 Ecoboost) or it's a overall reliable engine with one major flaw (3.5V6) and it's crazy to think Ford is still the most reliable American brand because GM and Chrysler products are worse. 90s and 00s Fords were fantastic besides awful transmissions. Right now I have a 2017 Escape 2.0 with 130,000 miles and with all I'm hearing I'm getting nervous wish having it lol, but I'm hearing 50/50. Some people say it's awful and others say it's fantastic so I just hope mine stays fantastic

@@TheOzthewiz well Ford definitely is more reliable then the American competition, not by a huge margin but with Chrysler products it's transmissions, overall build quality, and using mostly Fiat engines which aren't great, and most of their non Fiat engines have some flaw also. For GM you have transmission issues ontop of electrical issues and their engines that are commonly used the 3.6 V6 which is a unreliable nightmare and the Ecotecs that kill themselves Ford is definitely the better option.

That has to be under warranty with that low mileage. My 2016 Fusion with the same motor made it to 86k miles until someone spun out in front of me in the snow in 2019 and I broadsided them. Car did a great job of protecting me. If you think Chevy is better, read up on the Equinoxes with the Chinese built engines that burned a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, and GM said that was "normal"

i have a 2012 escape with the 2.0 i4. gets about 8 miles per gallon, transmission won’t shift past four, suspension is shit, and turbo lag takes longer than my grandma to get out of bed in the morning. absolute shitbox, can’t believe the state it’s in considering it’s ten years old. prior to it, i had a 2001 beetle that had close to 300k miles before the engine gave out. no excuses, nobody should be buying any ford vehicles!

Because of the EPA and unreal expectations for gas mileage it is forcing the auto companies to make shit engines.

Nah man. Just make the cars lighter. We have access to technologies and materials we never had 20 years ago, and if adopted and mass produced we would certainly all have carbon fibre cars with all the same comfort and strength as now, but half the weight. Look at Tesla's construction (ignore the political BS and electric). Their entire front end and rear end use injection forged aluminum forgings. easily 30% lighter than aluminum stamped sheet metal welded structures, and way stronger too. Cheaper to produce in quantity and very high tech. The auto industry in a whole, is married to older construction technologies because it is invested in them for years and wants to wring every last 1/10th of a penny out of that in profits. Instead of investing in the next big tech, they wanna be greedy shit mongers and sell you a 20 year old pig tarted up with 2020 makeup and call it "modern". Proof? take an 80's car and put a modern engine in it. insane performance and economy, because the 80's cars are so light. If you want to blame someone, blame the ford engineers for not doing their engineering and testing and validation correctly before pushing a design into production. Or blame the accountants for forcing the engineers too hard and screwing it up with "cost engineering". I don't blame the EPA. if left alone we would have rolling coal everywhere.

@@shmuck66 They can't make cars lighter because IIHS has rigorous requirements for side and front impact now and with the avg weigh of Americans trending up cars have to be safer or safely restrain occupants.

@@SweatyBearsGaming hogwash. as i pointed out material and engineering has changed lots. materials like carbon fibre and newer construction methods permit lighter and stronger bodies just as crash resistant if not more than what is available today.

Grandparents have a 2017 1.5 Titanium with 77,000 miles . I became aware of the coolant /head gasket issue so I kept track of the engine closely. I regularly changed the oil with top quality synthetic and filters at 5,000 miles. I also removed the thick foam engine cover which looked like a heat trap. The car also had the TSB done where Ford reprogrammed the computer so the electric engine fans ran on high all the time. Engine is Ford of Europe design Made in Craiova, Romania The grandparents loved the vehicle. It was what they wanted. Perfect size. Easy to drive long distances. Decent visibility and fuel mileage. They would not take another new car when offered. ZERO problems through 76,999 miles split city and highway...even has the original brakes. Factory Michelin tires lasted 45.000 miles . Only complaint was the $100+ Ford got you for to upgrade the Sync map. Two weeks ago they noticed white smoke at start up but that went away within seconds and the car ran fine. I checked the coolant level and it was down a inch. A week later the check engine light came on and the coolant was down 3 more inches. Sure sign of the ecoBoost kiss of death. Dealer was notified but cannot get car in until after the new year. Dealer said it was out of warranty and not to expect Ford to do much although it was possible. The 100,000 mile extended warranty they bought according to the dealer should cover the repairs. I assume a short block replacement is minimum. Hopefully a long block (complete engine minus bolt ons) will be used. Ford has known about this problem for years. How they have gotten away with not fixing or extending the warranties on these motors is beyond me. Expecting electric fans running longer to fix a major design flaw is sickening. This consumer abuse cannot stand.

I have a 2008 Ford Edge. The PTU & rear differential does not have a drain plug. I have a 2018 Rav4 and it has a drain plug. In order to get this Edge to 200k miles it has cost me $10k. A lot of the problems were attributed to a poor design in my opinion. I would stick with Toyota they might cost a little more in the front end & with other makes you will pay for it in the back end.
