I’m sitting in my 2017 Escape while typing this message, lol. It’s a company vehicle thank goodness so I get a rental when it breaks down. At 24,000 I needed new wheel bearings and new tires, at 70,000 I needed a new turbo charger, and engine, at 80,000 I needed a replacement transmission. The list goes on and on… I’m at 112,000 miles and so far it’s holding, why? Because 90% of this vehicle parts are new. got to love the escape, It’s been in the shop more times then I can count.

@@NotgoingTotellyou Full disclosure … I am retired from Ford Motor Co. and have extensive experience in the Parts & Service departments. It’s very easy to find a few people to complain about a failure, but statistically ridiculous to take those few complaints as indicative of an actual trend. Escapes have never been a warranty issue for Ford. If things were this bad then I am sure one of the eight family members I have that drive Escapes would have experienced a problem by now. You might ask to see some warranty history on the commenter’s vehicle, if he actually even owns one. This is KZbin … pretty easy to slam anything.

I’ll never understand why manufacturers don’t simply improve bigger engines using the access to things like diamond like carbon anti friction coatings, multi-phase variable valve timing which can include a low speed Atkinson mode like some Hyundais have. There are many naturally aspirated V6 and V8 engines that can easily get 20+ mpg city and 30+ highway. In fact one such engine is the Corvette ironically which can get 29-30+ highway mpg and 19+ city if ya don’t drive like a maniac! Simplicity is bliss. Great work Scotty! Keep up the great work

@LoganHankins
@LoganHankins 2 жыл бұрын
@@nolan_schnoo incorrect. An engine wears out through use. Forced induction increases the RPMs, which causes premature wear and tear on the vehicle. Measuring how long an engine lasts is typically represented through mileage...but we all know that we should ask why kind of mileage it is. Highway mileage typically is at lower RPMs, whereas city mileage is at higher RPMs. A turbo increasing RPMs causes more rotations per mile, if you think about it.
@JordanP6885
@JordanP6885 Жыл бұрын
@Logan Hankins forced induction does not cause higher RPMs. Turbos increase the efficiency of an engine by increasing the oxygen, allowing for more horsepower at the same RPMs as a non turbocharged engine.

I've got a VW with the 2.0 turbo - runs a champ. Came with an insane warranty, too: bumper to bumper to 211k miles (tacked onto the mileage at purchase rather than total limit). Already paid for itself when one of the computers shorted out. Since Scotty says turbos tend to fail at some point that warranty will more than pay for itself repairing the thing since it will fail under design obsolescence rather than maintenance failures (i'm a stickler on the maint).

My new (2022) Ford Edge has the grill shutters. They may help in very cold weather but the engine still has a thermostat in the coolant system to keep the engine at the proper temperature. The benefit claimed for the shutters is less aerodynamic drag at high speed in cold weather. It is just another complication caused by regulations. How often did the owner get his oil changed on the old engine. The publicized intervals by Ford are way too long. All the automakers are publishing long oil change intervals but the fuel dilution on boosted gdi engines will cause damage if the oil is not changed earlier.

My mechanic told me that this happens a lot with the 5.7 litre engine because the aluminum allow head had only 3 threads. Ford said I must have put after market plugs in but they were the original motorcraft and I only had 86,000 miles on the vehicle. My mechanic fixed it with a heli coil and bondo and I got rid of it fast.

When I got it back, the thing ran awful so I was only a month off going back to the dealer anyway so I gave it back to them. It had electrical gremlins all over the place, headlights wouldn't turn off, one would turn on, the other would go off, etc. It was a nightmare. @@GlycerinZ From my experience they end up draining more fuel than inline 4s. The newer ones don't initially, but the fuel figures end up getting noticibly worse over time. My mate has a 2018 Subaru XV with 90,000km and it's burning to the point where he needs to top it up every 2000km, he averages about 12l/100km, he's taken it to Subaru for servicing, and theres no issues other than it burning oil and chugging the fuel. Plenty of my other mates drive WRXs and they definitely guzzle fuel, more than other cars in the same category, same oil burning issues in them as well, no idea what Subaru does to achieve it, it used to be poor piston ring design, not sure if that is still the case.

I generally go along with Scotty but don't know of any respectable mechanics who would automatically assume the head and its components need to be replaced when the problem is with the shortblock. Would just check it out and reinstall with a new head gasket if no issues noted. Other than for a crack, even if any problems with a head are found , such as burnt valves or warpage, it's generally repairable, at a cost much less than for a replacement. Run, don't walk from a shop pushing for unnecessary parts replacement when its coming out of your pocket, nor expect unnecessary replacements under warranty. It was stupid to not at least install a new timing belt and to not realize it was likely off by one tooth - which is an easy mistake - due to the resulting drivability issues, assuming the vehicle was actually road-tested . A reputable shop would take care of that immediately.

Anything turbo made today you need to runaway from. Headgaskets blow, pistons crack, rods break, rings have tons of blowby. I owned a 90 Probe 2.2 GT turbo, but back then the turbos were not as highstrung and I got 240k before I sold it and it was still running great. Now they use low mass pistons, lighter rings, and crumby gaskets. These are made to run hard but when you do that they break especially when using light duty parts. Exactly I have a 2016 fusion with the 1.5 and got almost 200k and still runs and shifts like a dream. It's never the vehicles fault if there is a problem it's the owners fault they don't take care of it if that motor blew at 60k. Owner probably never changed his oil. But it never would have went out if he had changed it regularly

@@thefordshopyard5348 I had the same issue it went out at about 60k miles and always had my oil changed at 3.5k bc it’s gdi turbocharged. It was pretty much 80% highway driving. So I don’t know where you’d think I went wrong with maintenance since it was always done at the dealership.

For inlines, I will either get a regular i4 or maybe an i6 with a turbo. Now, I am aiming at getting a v8. Screw i4 turbos.
