Maintenance fees probably won't go up. Ford has a The Works package for C$80 that includes tire rotations, oil changes, battery health tests, and the likes. Replacing the battery though, no doubt folks are going to be forking over C$300 because of this braindead design.

no question, hell they even designed a handy dandy wire from ground to an accessible bolt that you can clamp on during jump starts. ford -follow steps 1-50 to remove battery hyoundi -dissconnect battery, pull up to remove battery casing, remove battery.

I work on fords and it is much easier and faster to remove the battery by removing the air filter housing and sliding it through the front. Ford only pays techs a half an hour to replace so we find the shortcuts.

Most auto parts don't want to fuck with an Escape. They do free installation on every car. But with the extra step they refuse to do it on an Escape. Who's the moron came up with the idea. My mom have a 2016 Escape. She have to pay a friend like $60 bucks and the fucking battery cost like $191.00. And no transmission dipstick. And oil change you have to take off a piece of plastic. Which most oil change place charge her extra. This piece of shit cost more to maintain than a Honda or Toyota.

Great video. How is it that for a better part of a century vehicle manufacturers designed vehicles with an easily accessible hold down bar and you could re/re a battery in 5 minutes and be on your way. The engineer who designed this engine compartment said "WAIT!, I have a better way". Stupid stupid stupid. Maybe it is the same guy that in the 4.0 thought it would be a great idea to make the thermostat housing out of PLASTIC, and then also make it inaccessible without removing umpteen friggin bolts and completely removing the intake manifold. I haven't bought a Ford since '96 and won't ever buy another one of their engineering abominations again.
@TheMrkaninja5 жыл бұрын
Jason! I feel your pain. I had that damn motor designed by retarded monkeys. That thermostat housing split twice on mine in 4 years. Filled the valley with coolant and sprayed coolant on the belt which covered the engine nicely! This tucked away battery design tells me Ford still has shit for brains. Out of warranty battery replacements they get to charge an hour labour at $135/hr though.......so maybe more sinister than stupid. Fuck Ford.
@robertgreene27864 жыл бұрын
It is evident that they do these things so that people give up on trying to maintain their own vehicles (for far less financial burden) and just do what the owner's manual says. Take it to the dealer. That way they can get that $80-200 for minor services any able bodied person can do. They make it overly complicated so people will doubt their own abilities and go to "certified" mechanics out of fear of damaging their own vehicle by trying to do it themselves.

David Roberts - No, I did not get it loose after grease, WD 40, watching 3 other KZbins on how to remove a stuck windshield wiper arm. Then, trying those techniques (minus the puller because I don’t have one). So, to sidestep that stuck arm problem I removed the Escape battery using the standard by removing the air filter and air filter assemblage. There is more than one way to skin an Escape. Maybe someday I will buy a puller to remove that windshield wiper arm. Maybe . . . Thanks for the response.

Sooo, what kind of battery are we expecting to see when we pop that cowl off? I see 3 listings a NON-AGM battery (IQ unknown), a SMART-AGM for stop-start cursed vehicles, and a non-Smart version. I didn't realize there was a non stop-start version of the Escape for 2018, I certainly would have requested it. All 3 Batts came up on a search for my 2018. I'm wondering what would happen if I put a non-Smart battery in there. Would I get a constant error code on the dash? Would it fully disable the stop-start (my objective) or would it just partially disable stop-start?

I grew up in a family of mechanics, and when my friend let me look under her hood. I was like, omg, no. One thing my dad always has said is that you look under the hood first. Is it easy to get at everything you need to replace. If not, dont even bother looking amusing further. I'm sure Ford did this as a scam. I couldn't even believe the owners manual. What a waste of paper. It's like, if anything goes wrong. Bring it into a ford dealership. There isnt even instructions on how to replace it. Just bring it in. My question is, just how easy is it to lift this battery up and out. Since it's not shown in this video either, I just have a hard time believing that once I get in there after all this and its gonna lift straight out? Isnt it still up and under the window? So, if it dont lift straight out to have a new one drop in. Then what's the trick to it?

Pull the air box and zip tube out, disconnect the B+ terminal, lift the front panel of the battery box while slightly pulling out on the front sides. Remove the two 10mm nuts for the battery hold down, I used a 1/4” drive ratchet, and the battery will slide out the front. Lift on the B- cable and current sensor wire on the outer side of the battery while doing so. Just an alternative method as there is more than one way to skin a cat.

So I'm trying to troubleshoot a misfiring cylinder. Every couple of days the check engine light goes off. I'll switch some components around so I can try to isolate what's causing the problem, and then I have to disconnect the negative terminal to reset the code and see if it reproduces itself. This car is my daily commuter, so I need to keep having it together and being functional. In my previous 10 years of owning a car, I have never needed to have my own OBD reader, but the hassle of having to repeatedly take apart the entire battery cover cluster on the escape has inspired me to go out and buy one today. I am so sick of having to get to the negative terminal so I can clear codes.

Thank you Ford for putting the battery all the way in the back of the car. Fuck most auto parts don't want to mess with an Escape. It takes longer to install the battery. It used to take about 45 minutes. You either have to take off the cowling or air filter to get to the battery. Fuck if you take it to a Pep Boys it cost around $45 to install the battery. And another thing about this fuck up suv is the plastic cover you have to remove to change the oil. And no transmission dipstick. Ford don't want you to service this vehicle yourself.

Did a battery change on a 2016 Escape. This guy was definitely to the point. One thing to emphasize is on the cowls, the upper one has the clips that attach from the rear of the cowl at the base of the windshield. When he says not to yank on that, he's dead on. Like many things on cars, certain things can't be manhandled, especially when clips are involved as it's very easy to break them. For this, I started on the ends and worked my way to the center until all were free. The clips that hold the two sections together - do like he shows you and gradually pry them out. Also, do like he says on the wiper arms as you can do a number on them when removing them. Otherwise, great video! Saw other comments pertaining to why engineers design things like this. Have to agree. They sure as hell don't make it easy. But videos like this give you some hope. Don't be afraid to try something like this. Will save you a few bucks in the end!

This video just saved me because Walmart said that this was to complicated as they could t change it. Watched the video, did in the parking lot myself.

This is nuts. Just replaced mine. Remove the air filter box and pull out the battery. Hate to see you do an oil change. Do you take off the transmission to do it lol.

Just did one and while you were very clear in your instructions, there is another way. If you move the air filter box out of the way, the front of the battery box slides off then you can reach the hold down and pull the battery forward to remove the terminals. Seemed a little easier to me.

Thanks for the help. Horrible curses on the engineers. I have plenty of design complaints on Fords older the 1991. I think they hate the DIY'er.

I agree. They want everyone to have to come to them for any maintenance.

Engineers continue to astound me with their complete lack of common sense. Real life is not found in a book.

This was a great step by step. It made it fairly straightforward - thanks! As others have noted, my 2015 used 10 mms nuts rather that 8 mm.

Nice video. Just did this today on our 2018 Escape. I found that the referenced 8 mm bolts were 10 mm. Other than that this went pretty well. Took me 1 hour to do this. I consider myself moderately mechanical. This video definitely helped. Thank you.
