The Ford dealer in Bastrop, Texas tried telling my sister her water pump went out or needed replaced after they did some recall work. Thanks to your video, I changed that sensor out and her car worked fine. Saved her $1700 Ford tried charging her. Thank you for taking time to make this video 8 years ago

For those of you who can't find a deepwell 19mm that fits, the lug nut wrench that comes with your spare tire will fit the CHT sensor.

“Shy away from the dealer”. Best words of wisdom ever. I’d rather pay more money and have peace of mind than pay less and have more issues down the road.

Another point. My dad took his car to Jiffy Lube for an oil change. They noticed some type of fluid leak. Since the car is a Pontiac my dad took it to the Pontiac dealership. An estimate of $1300 to replace the oil pan gasket and a CV joints. Fortunately my dad said no way. Instead he took it to our local mechanic and Graniteville, SC. It was not an engine oil leak. There was a loose hose on the power steering. The end result is that he saved almost $1000 by not taking it to the dealership and getting a correct diagnosis.

Yeah my wife's Yukon has been riding ruff. Dealer said $1800 front struts were leaking. I bought the AC/delco shocks from Amazon. Had local shop put on. Shocks were only $300. Got out less than $800. But vehicle still rides like crap. Very bouncy. So I did research online. Found there is a TSB. You go into gmc website type in Vin. It showed the ride control had a software update to address this. I printed out screen shots of everything, weblink all information to make it simple. It has a part number for the update. I gave them all of this. It even says this addresses the ruff ride. These are magnetic shocks and computer controlled. Took to dealer today. They called me said their tech said we just needed new shocks. I said yeah we already replaced them. He said they didn't know what I was talking about with the updates. I'm like this is your GMC website, your TSB and you dont know what to do? There like yes don't know what your talking bout. So gotta pick it up today. I at a loss for words. I work on Toshiba equipment for a living. I have similar prosess for updates that come out. It's something I could do, I just don't have the programs they do to download and update it. So I don't know who to trust.....

Couldn’t find proper deep 19mm or 3/4 socket. Ran thru all the tools and parts store in town. Ended up cutting a 3/4 deep socket in half and welded it to another deep 3/4 socket, worked like a charm in case anybody ever ends up in the same situation.

I have a 2001 Ford Focus SE. Lucky for me through the years, my parts were still originals for 16 years, but then I got the overheating when driving 30 mph down residential streets. I learned the exhaust fans weren't coming on when engine gets hot. They do come on when AC is running. I changed the temperature switch and alternator while at it. When finished, the engine sounded way better and more powerful, but still had overheat. I changed the Thermostat. But no. After a lot of researching online and you tube, I finally found one thing on you tube I hadn't seen before. The resistor connected to the fans. The resistor wires are connected to the temperature switch. It activates the fans if the engine gets hot with no AC running. The connectors were both fried. After changing resistor, it worked and no more overheating.

Hey I just wanted to thank you for these videos... This one in particular. I bought a used 2012 escape from a non ford dealer a few weeks ago in a pinch in winter and used your trans fluid change video then just got stuck on the side of the freeway in the Dakotas and found this video. It literally saved me a tow truck ride in the middle of the night (and I have to work in the morning) I had the overheat and CEL and felt the engine and it wasn't that warm... Googled fake Ford Escape overheat and found another one of your videos. Pulled the plug for the coolant sensor and sure enough that cup in the plug is full of water. I used some paper towel to soak the water out of the male sensor cup part. I dunno if the dealer pressure washed the engine or what but I made it home with no other problems. Sincerely thanks.

My 2009 Ford Focus was having an issue going cold. Changed out the thermostat, and while doing so found a leak in the radiator. Replaced the radiator. Put vacuum on system and filled with coolant. Same thing was happening. Replaced the cylinder head temperature sensor and valve cover gaskets. No further issues.

this is exactly what was wrong with my car. two things different, 1 - on my vehicle, the sensor was intermittent. It was until I replaced it I was able to find out that it was the cause to the problem I was experiencing. Which brings me to the second finding, opposite to what video is talking about. on my car the temp indicator wasn't even moving. Additionally, the fan was coming on as soon as I start the car even on a cold morning. the replacement was supper easy. I torqued the sensor as I would for a spark plug. Over all this was a good informational video to help identify and fix the problem. Thanks FordTechMakuloco

I've got a 17 Escape Titanium with the 2.0. It started misfiring and saying it was overheating when the ambient temp was 50 degrees and the car had just been started and run a half mile down the road. I hope that this is my issue. I usually wouldn't go to the dealer, but I've had my doubts whether or not an independent mechanic could diagnose the problem. There are coolant intrusion issues with the ford ecotec engines, and it's been spooking me to no end. Wish me luck folks, and THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO.

From one Brian to another...thank you! I replaced the thermostat in my wife's 2009 escape and it had obvious air pockets. It actually put out heat in the cabin, which it didn't do before, however after awhile it overheated again! UGH! Just checked for codes and wouldn't you know it P1299 "Cylinder head overtemp protection active" in other words....bad sensor. The many videos I started to watch were not the correct placement of the sensor, until THIS one!! So, again.....THANK YOU!!

Thanks again Brian for you to share with us your wealth of knowledge. I was having on my 2010 Focus with 2.0 Duratec the cooling fan on high speed with a cold engine. Its November now here in Quebec and somehow cold with snow. The cylinder head temperature sensor was giving the pcm false informations. There was no codes, no check engine light, just my cooling fan going on at full blast when it shouldn’t. The temperature gauge on the cluster was reaching it’s (normal) indication faster then normal as a clue. The temperature would stay there, no weird indications. I did use a 3/4´´Deep socket 12 sided from Performance Tool. It was just perfect to complete the task. Once again, many thanks!

you are very smart on these fords, my escape is doing the same thing, The temp gauge would peg over to hot and then drop back down, engine light is on, they plugged it in and a P1299 code came up, they couldnt tell me what that was.....(hmmmm) I found you on here years ago when i was searching about the drivers axle seal leaking on my escape, i talked to you and i had thought about driving out to your place so you could change my seal, but it has not got any worse i might have to add a few ounces of atf twice a year ( and i only use type LV ) in my book you are the ford man, you really know what to do and how to do it,,,,thx again i will go out now and check that plug for corrosion and scrape some off if possible... kinda adds up i had just lightly sprayed my motor compartment with a hose just the other day.......(imagine that ) thx again ,,, #1 ford mechanic...Oh btw i have 95000 on my little 4 cly escape now, only use motocraft synthetic blend every 3500 miles,,,, no problems,,, except for new belt and idler pullys last year.......thx guy, have a great day......

I've had this happen to many 05 focuses 2.0.I put in a new one from O'Reillys and it threw a code for thermostatic threshold.theyve updated that part and the actual part that sits in the passage is smaller on the new one. Even on the ford lucky me I found the original OEM ones in the junkyard.2 years later no codes on anyone of the ones I've replaced on mine and customers cars. I like working on one brand its a lot easier for diagnosis and it helps with book hours. Its great going from a ford to a Mercedes Benz

Hey Brian! My wife just had an issue with 2013 Ford Escape Titanium Ecoboost. Something blew, a hose, radiator or something. I popped the hood b/c the code read on my reader P1255 and notice green fluid. Thus it slowed the engine down to low throttle to avoid over heating and low power. Couldn't even get it up the slanted driveway into the garage. I put coolant in and right away noticed it pouring out the bottom. Gotta have it towed to the mechanic. While it's there it needs the wipers worked on b/c those aren't responding. SOme days I want to ring Ford engineers by the neck! I try to stay loyal to my home state but Ford has been falling fast from favor with me. I have a 2010 Fusion SE I bought used. Running great for now.

Lifesaver thank you so much I have an 06 escape hybrid with $311,000 mi on it and she is been my tried true blue go to get to anywhere zero maintenance except for oil changes tires and lower suspension but for two years she's been sputtering slowly just getting worse very slowly emissions lights coming on once in awhile not sure you know if it's going to be a big thing spottering misfire just today when I needed her it was really hot out her ECM just went nuts and I usually try to reset it I play with it and play with the cooling fans in the battery pack disconnect the battery and usually that works to reset her but she didn't reset today and I thought until I saw your video that I'm up schitt's creek without a paddle.! Well oh my God I'm going to go and look at my car right now and see if she has that same issue cuz it's a miracle I found your video I was praying for one and there it is amazing here incredible mechanic and coming from an almost retired diesel mechanic I have to say you impress the s*** out of me! Well just checked it it's not corrosion it's oil my valve cover gasket must be leaking the whole compartment filled with oil underneath that boot probably about to the top of the terminals so I'm going to guess that it's misfiring because of the shorts and now it's the level has gotten high enough to interfere with the coolant temperature sensor permanently or not the coolant sensor but the head temperature sensor but that info was a lifesaver thank you God bless

Good info. Ford Dealerships Will Screw Ya! Yes, this video is old but so is my Wife's 2009 Ford Escape (non-hydrid) 2.5ltr. This car was bought new by my Grandmother. So it's supper clean with less than 100k miles. The steering started screwing up & Grandmother didn't have those non power steering issues during the time of the recall. We were told Ford only Offers to cover a recall if it's done within a year. So, we buy the car because the Dealership wanted $2k for the Steering Column, they already charged $400 to replace the Torque Sensor. I looked on EBay & bought an OEM Ford Steering Column for $1k, the same part # as the $2k Dealership column. Then the Dealership wanted an additional $500 to install!! I got an Independent Shop to install for $200. So a Dealership $2500 charge only cost me $1200. Steering is like new now.. Still less than 100k miles on the Escape & my Wife loves it. Stay away from used Escapes & other Hybrid Models because Ford only warranties the big flat Hybrid battery for like 3 or 4 years & they don't last much longer than that. If that Hybrid battery is dead? That car will stop running, is what the dealership told me.

My wife's 2015 Fusion SE has been the worst car we have had in years. I was a Loyal Ford buyer in the 80's into the early 90's. After 2 Ford F150 lemons 1992 and a 1994 I left Ford and went to GM. Never had an issue or one with lots of problems again so I never touched a Ford again after that. In 2016 my wifes 2002 Buick Century we got in 2002 hit 190k and was 16 years old. Only in shop once to repair the common intake manifold gasket failure it was time for her a new car. She liked the look of the Fusion as it was a sporty mustang looking 4 door sedan so against my better judgement we decided to get her one. We got a 1 year old 2015 Fusion with 18k miles on it. Loved it until we were left stranded at 22k. Ford towed it in under warranty and it turned out to be a cracked head in 3 places. Appeared to be an issue from when they forgedd the head and got through quality control. I know quality is job 1 at Ford. Got it fixed and it has ran good until now at 45k miles. Started misfiring and engine code. Code is intermittent but computer says bad ignition soinoid, but not which one so I baught 4 brand new ones with lifetime warranties from O'Rielly to make sure to get correct one. All good for a couple weeks then the same problem is back. I am now thinking a bad plug or some sort od corroded sensor. Have you dealt with this issue? Believe me after I fix this I am trading it off and not going to touch another Ford for the rest of my life. Always problems with them. I know you got people that have had good luck, but not me:P

I have 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid with 218,000 miles. I get a High Motor Temperature Warning only when it is raining heavily or the day after I drive in heavy rain. It sounds very similar to this issue. Dealer keeps telling my it's the Hybrid Control ("Hybrid brain" is how they described it.. I don't know..). They say it needs replaced and quoted $3500.. $2500 for the part + $1000 in labor. Like I said, this only happens when I drive in the rain or the day after rain. I get the overheat warning within a few seconds of the car starting, even if it's been sitting all day. The car usually runs just fine. Just get the darn annoying warning. Some times the warning is so brief, you don't even see the warning symbol, you just hear the chime. When it's raining heavily the warnings are enough to drive you nuts. After it dries out for a day, no issues at all.. Runs like a champ for weeks on end until heavy rain again. I've been dealing with this for over a 100,000 miles now. I drive a 1000 miles per week. I think a 35 cent bead of caulk will probably fix the issue but the dealer is incapable of properly diagnosing the problem. I am going to ask them to look at the CHT Sensor now and see what they say. I cannot find the TSB # for this. Another site says it's 11-10-5 but I cannot seem to find any other reference to this or the actual TSB

Nice video. I think i might have the same issue here. Its a ford focus mk2 1.6 16v zetec engine. And when in test mode, the dashboard display shows that the engine temperature is 120°C, but the temp gauge shows its about 80°C. I googled a bit and heard about the CHTS also thanks to your video too. Would you mind telling where the CHTS would be located on the 1,6 16v ZETEC engine ? Btw. totaly agree about what you said going to dealership vs. independent garages. I learned the leasson in a costly way too, and from that moment on i always go to dealership garages. From my knowledge you guys in dealerships go to educations, something someone at independent garages might be missing. Ok most techs should / would be able to repair most of the stuff on any car, but there is still room for the little quirks applicable to specific manufacturers that you learn through manufacturer info provided to dealerships.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ. 2007 Ford Fusion SE 2.3 4 Cylinder I just went to my Ford dealer for an oil change, and I'm so happy that I went to the dealer. Here's why: I paid additional money to have an inspection of the vehicle. In the inspection, they found three things. One was an oil leak on top of the engine near the valve cover area. Today I looked for myself and confirmed their finding. I pulled off the boot cover to the CHT and found the chamber was flooded with engine oil. I sort of believe that because engine oil is now surrounding the CHT, it must be relaying an incorrect temp to the gauge on the dash, and an incorrect temp on my OBD 2 scanner. I also removed a coil to see if the spark plug chamber was flooded too (yes it was). Any suggestions on how I should proceed with this known problem? I believe this started back in April earlier this year and the car has been running fine, for now.

Thanks for this video and the information. I have a 2010 Fusion with the 2.5L and the 6F35 trans. I'm going to go out and check my CHT to see if there is any corrosion. I'd rather prevent a problem than fall victim. Should we use regular high temp RTV to seal the boot? Also it's probably a good idea to open up all the plug and CHT holes after washing the engine compartment and blow out with compressed air? Not sure how much water gets in the plug holes, but after seeing this... Thanks again. -Matt

Regular automotive silicone sealant will do, I would check all the spark plug well if the engine was power washed yes.

I’m having a similar issue with my 2013 fusion 1.6. It’s about 50 degrees here in arizona and I’ll do a cold start and in about 15 mins my cooling fans will turn on and my temp gauge will spike up and get close to the redline. If I drive around the cooling fans turn off and the temp will go back down to normal (a bit below the middle mark). If I make a stop for a few minutes, the cooling fans will turn back on and repeat the overheating shown on the temp gauge. There’s also no check engine or codes. What do you think it is?

I have a Fusion v6 and I'm having problems with engine overheating. Works all day normally, but when I accelerate a little stronger, the temperature rises, sometimes little, sometimes a lot and then down to normal temperature. Already changed the radiator, water pump, did cleaning of the system apparently is not mixing water with oil and the car in no time failure. Have you seen this? I know the car boils, because if I open the water reservoir, the water jumps all out.

I still have not solved my problem, I replaced thermostatic valve, water pump, belt temperature sensor and radiator. My mechanic is suspicious that it may be the automatic transmission that is heating 6F35. Case you find out anything please let me know. Tanks.

Great video! I have a 2010 Mercury Mariner with the 2.5 it had a bad tensioner and was throwing the belt. It had the code for the CHT but I thought it was because of the fact that it was running without a belt. After replacing we drive it for about 10 to 15 minutes then it doesn't start. I cleared codes after replacing tensioner and belt and I'm still getting the CHT code. I connected a scan tool and the CHT reads -40 degrees I checked just like in the video but the sensor looks good but I noticed the connector does not lock on the sensor. Should I replace the connector or both the sensor and the connector? Would an incorrect temp reading cause the crank no start issue?

Does that sensor set in or over a well for coolant? If so that would be a much easier home fix for clearing the air from inside the block during a coolant fill. I’m asking because I’m in this pain now. Small leak identified but unlocatable during vacuum filling since there’s no liquid to leak. It’s been a long week on this

So my temp gauge spiked driving to work yesterday. It spikes while driving, and drops while idling. It did it again this morning. I have no heat when idling, but heat works when driving. I just bled my cooling system. It did have air in it, and bleeding it seems to have helped, but I noticed when I pulled the cover off the CHT sensor to check that, that I have what looks like used motor oil pooled down in there. I have a 2007 with 160,000 miles on it and I am imagining the worst with that oil being in there.

I have a 2013 I bought in 2016 and it has over heated 4 times on me in the first 3 months, I took it to the "dealer" they told me it was the battery which was not the case, then it was a sensor they replaced them still overheating then they couldn't find anything and still charged me. took to a midas shop where I gt all my other work done they informed me they had 20-25 escapes and called ford to no end and no fix was found. So my question to you if you can help is this, what would cause my car to overheat while waiting in traffic or in line at Dunkin Donuts? it has no overheating while driving only when sitting in gear and it don't matter summer or in the cold of winter here in Vermont I would love to be able to go to my dealer but they are not able to fix it so please any help would be very nice vs waiting for it to shut down or even catch fire Thanks you once more for any help Paul Taylo
