We have escort 1997 mk6 1.4 still drives my dad goes to work with it biggest problem is rust other than that the car is aight i love it

The average 80s/90s cars that you never see anymore always excites me more than most other things on the road. Those every day cars that you feel has disappeared from one day to the other. When is the last time you've seen a Sierra or Primera if you think about it? Thanks for saving this one. I'd honestly pay money if someone made a museum of "normal" cars from that time period, but maybe I'm just a silly nostalgic. 🙂

I can't get excited about late Escorts. They got progressively worse after the Mk3 and by the time of the Mk6 the competition was so afr ahead the Escort was a bit of an embarrassment to Ford.

Also - speaking of reliability of these Escorts: only thing which killed them is rust. If you go on holiday to some warm country or other remote exotic islands, they are still going strong over there!

Bland! This was the time of NVH being considered heavily at the design stage. Ford spent a lot of money on it. All this was helped along by the advancements in computing. Bland also meant easy to drive. Long trips became much less of a chore, even if you were bored to death. Better sound systems helped to relieve the boredom if that was your sort of thing. I wonder what the new car will be?

A lot of cars that were once overlooked by people as "just a car" are now pricey collecables, stuff that was once just street furniture, parked outside just about everywhere, then all of a sudden seemed to be gone, even early 2000s cars seem to be hitting the collectable status now, which is scary to think about... :S

I dont remember anything about Wind noise from alle the Escorts i drove. Your friend should not have said anything 😅 But i do remember something abort the selv adjusting real brakes needing a litteratur manual help to adjust. Ifølge you wanted that good fejl from the handbrake and betingelser alle to du handbrake turns. KZbin needed to manualen adjust Them as far out as possible and just slightly dragging a bit on the drum.

Jeg fik i min tid som skrothandler i start 10erne utallige af de escorter her og ofte i præcis den farve. Motor og gearkasse kører faktisk godt. Men rust dræbte dem. Tror også ford havde forventet at de ikke ville holde særlig længe. Med kilometer tæller der kun går til 99999😅

I had a 99 Escort Si 1.8 16v Coupé (Small name) and I don't remember bad wind noises, there was noise but nothing out of the ordinary from what I remember.

I'm in the same boat. I punish myself by driving 80s cars just because I can. I get asked often why do I need 6 rust buckets instead of having one modern car.

I know it might not be close to you, but on Autoscout24 there's an MG Metro Turbo for sale in Germany with a really bad right sill. I'd pick it up myself if I had the skills to fix it (which I sadly don't), but it'd be awesome to see you give it a shot!

I'd love a little everyday 'unexceptional' classic car as a second vehicle, something quirky I could take to old car shows and for occasional days out. Indeed, I have my eye on a lovely 2000 model right now that no-one else seems to want (cheap, low mileage, fsh, lovely paintwork, immaculate interior, no rust, li'l old lady owned etc). But I know from bitter experience what happens to old cars that are left outside and not driven much. If I had somewhere to store it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

Imo the first Focus is not boring at all. They drive great. And the new edge styling is kinda funky. About the windnoise in Escort, sometimes it is a question of the doorseals not sealing properly. Could be the rubber seal, could also be a door or door lock that is not adjusted correctly.

ARGH...They dont all drive the same, This Escort is the last of the line, It had become a soft hat car at the time, try the Focus, not only the styling is new edge. The Ghia got a reputation as an old mans car because of the wood styling panels, so even the style levels got new names with time. Tested an similar car in period against a Fiat Marea, my dad needed a new car, I got the Escort to drift on 4 wheels on a twisty road driving a little Fresh, he bought the Marea, of course that was part of a new model range starting in the nineties and not ending as the Escort, but try one of these and come again with they all drive ...

What I meant is, the feel... the feel of the brakes, the engine, the steering and the fabrics are very much the same.. (because it is!) The road holding and power is not.

That's a shame the stereo doesn't work, indeed they are very nice. I remember having the same radio in a 2001 Transit and it was bonkers good.
