Right idea lowering the shell onto the crossmember Dave. I believe the lads at David Sutton used that method with the RS1600 / RS1800’s

I did my city & guilds welding at night school while I was in the 6th form at school nearly 50 yrs ago and I am pretty sure you should have put a bigger bevel on the plate to get full penetration weld as that engine mount will be stressed, keep a eye on it for cracks in service, best regards
@terryatkinson899 Жыл бұрын
Love the engine mounts, id have been stumped there not knowing what to do. Ad someone said, a stick welder would have been much easier to make them with as it has more filler rod to play with and thick steel is its forte.🤗👍🇮🇪
@DavesGarageuk Жыл бұрын
A few have said the same, but I really can't stick weld 🤣 I've tried a few times, but it just makes an almighty mess.. I can't get used to the disappearing stick.

This is just a dry build, to see where everything needs to go, brackets, extra holes, further fabrication etc. It'll get taken apart again for paint.

Nice work, did notice the cross member was a bit far rear compared to the usual position the zetecs go, similar to the x flows. Some 20-35mm more towards the firewall. Usually need to cut the lip off from the firewall.
@DavesGarageuk Жыл бұрын
Hi MJ, apart from the cost, that's one reason I prefere to make my own mounts, I don't like the idea of cutting up the lip. Just means the engine fits a little forward, but I xan live with that.
@MJPilote Жыл бұрын
@@DavesGarageuk I really like your approach on things, you build it as you see fit as it's your car. Most people follow the heard and stuff look the same. I prefer back as possible and as low I can shove the zetec for better weight distribution. But I do understand not wanting to cut that lip. I too wrestled with the idea back in the day.

Nice work Dave looks nice , Thinking out loud I had a similar idea to do this to an escort van an convert it to rear wheel drive I’m in to minds as it’s such a lot of work but I can’t help but tinker …I might just drop the st engine in as it is front wheel drive 🤔 decisions decisions !

Cracking job Dave I went the other route and bought the Retroford mounts, my vvt solenoid didn’t snap but I pulled the top half off I then pushed it back on don’t know if this is going to be a problem tried to get one but like you found out that they’re discontinued I have bought a second engine so I can use the one on there but it would be good to know if the Passat one works cheers Dave 👍👍👍

I like to use the arc/stick welder for that heavy gauge welding, fills those holes and chamfers lovely. We put Capri front struts in my brother's MK1 many years ago, I think it was because we spent time measuring various things in the scrapyard and concluded they were the same but lowered the car either through being shorter or the spring seat being further down the leg, maybe a combination of the two, can't remember after all this time, they could have been MK1 Capri legs too if there's any difference. Where did you go at the end?
@DavesGarageuk Жыл бұрын
Hi Superloopy, a fella local to me had a pai of mk2 front struts which is what I had on my first Mk1, so I know I can work with them.
