Used try getting shut of oilcanning using my blowtorch & all the circly circly, wet cloth, bang bang faffy stuff - generally ended up worse than I started with. Now I just blat on a circle or three of small, spaced out spot-welds with the welder, aiming to get them into the most stretched areas. Each ickle weld spot shrinks the metal where it sits, resulting in the whole area being shrunk-ified & getting shut of the oil-canning. Then I grind everything smooth again. That tensions the metal back nice & taut without all the Voodoo that's called for using a blowtorch. Everyone does stuff different, but that's what works for me. I'm fairly thick, so I like simple solutions, plus I'm always in a hurry - so faffing about tends to be avoided.

Plus "The Science" of using a blowtorch is fairly dodgy - heat it up, it expands, then you cool it rapidly, it contracts..yeah... back to where it was.. and you've achieved nothing bar more warping. "Hit it with a dolly held behind.." - yeah, works mint when there's no access to the backside.. plus hitting it expands not shrinks the metal.. but semantics, lol.. You get oil-canning because the steel has stretched when dented & stretched again when you pull the dent out. Or its shrunk due to the heat of welding (in which case the blowtorch does sod all).. either or. If its stretched, shrink it with spot-welds. If it's shrunk, hammer it out if you have access, or shrink the area around the, erm, shrunk bit if you don't. Shrink it all taut - it's why God invented filler. Get it taut & close, preferably low, no oil-canning & then use a thin layer of filler. "You can't use filler!" people will shriek - if I had a quid for every deep layer of FACTORY applied filler I've ground off, I could afford someone to type out these long replies for me. Filler & paint make it the panel it ain't. Even from factory. Actually, almost always from factory. ;; Posher the car, deeper the factory applied filler. It is what it is.

Great video again, I very much appreciate and enjoy watching your efforts! I have seen a similar shrinking method that doesn't use a hammer. Just heat a red hot spot in the centre of the oil can and immediately fast cool it with a cold wet rag. This achives the same shrinking effect without the hammer. Love to see you try it? Hi Dave. You can get a gas saver tool. You set up your flame. Then hook your torch onto the gas saver it turns it off. But has a built in pilot light so you can light the torch up without setting up the torch again.

Nice job Dave. Oxy-propane is very handy sometimes. I used to be able to borrow a BOC Portapack oxy-acetylene setup which was fantastic for the small garage, but the guy got rid of it unfortunately.

Nice job.. I should have invested in a dent puller when I started mine. I have had to use that heat shrinking technique on a number of panels works to remove dents as well as oil canning. Works pretty well just applying the heating and then a quench I have found. But I have been using a mig welder to create the hot spots not oxy.

@lestercranmer2631 For bad Panel Stretch you could buy a Dolly with a groove in it a Quarter inch wide & depth . Round base Panel Hammer going to wedge can force a small Dent into the panel stiffens it up immediately sometimes more than 1 small dent is required depending on size of stretch area thin skim of Cataloy etc.

Hi, I have tried gasless wire, I find it very good. The only thing I don't like is the grey powdery mess it leaves behind. If you're going to try it, make sure your welder will support it as the polarity is reversed, and I found the 0.8mm wire worked well for me.
