I just got an '07 explorer sport trac a year and a couple months ago and it just started to do this. Thanks to this vid, it gives me a good starting point to diagnose my truck and hopefully get it back on the road. The sport trac really does need a lot more love since it's such a great vehicle to drive, so as long as it's maintained properly, as with any and every vehicle should be.

I went straight to the fuse box, pushed down on all relays and they all had popped up alittle. The damn thing started right up, probably alittle luck. Good video thanks!!

Great video! My '02 Explorer Sport Trac decided not to turn on anymore a few days ago. Was working great until I stopped to run in to store and it would not turn back on. No previous signs or symptoms of it having any issues. Had it towed home and now need to work on it.

So after two days, my truck fired up like there was nothing was wrong with it. Drove it around a few times today, shutting it off and on. The only thing I did to it was to check fuses and connections, hoses, and inertia switch. I was ready to change out the fuel filter and pump when I decided to try to turn it on. Hate that I don't feel confident with it.

Great video I learned most of my mechanic abilities from my dad and uncle. I pushed the relays in and tried it but no start. After you reminded me about the fuel pump sound when you turn the key on I went and tried it... no noise. Not positive but pretty sure it's a relay... Thanks

Thanks for your video. I had a similar no-start / hard start issue. It was the fuel pump check valve in the tank not holding fuel pressure to the rails. I put an aftermarket check valve in the fuel line. Enjoy your channel!

Had the exact same symptoms, my problem turned out to be a faulty PCM relay, the larger relay just to the left of the fuel pump relay the OP identified at the end of the vid.

thanks bro!! took out air filter and went to the fuse box and jiggled them all.....started right up....so it was one of the things that made it turn over....it cranked before but would not turn over.....sweet...live 1 hour to closest mechanic so would have cost me a chuck.....

I have a 1999 ford Explorer XLT with the 4.0 V6. It has 250k miles on it. It has been my daily driver since I bought it with 148k miles on it. It has never given be a lick of trouble until recently. I came from work the other day and it started ‘bucking’ like it was running out of gas. Luckily, it died right in front of my house. I went to restart it, and it sputtered like no gas. There is over ¾ tank of gas. I went out the next morning and it started right up like nothing was wrong. I changed out the fuel filter because this, and the fuel pump, was about the only thing I haven’t changed, and it started right up again. I also put in a bottle of ‘Heet.’ I drove it around today and it drove fine, plenty of power etc. I got about ½ mile from home and it did it again, acted up like it was out of gas, it would not restart, etc. I wound up having to get it towed home. Both times when this happened there was no ‘check engine’ light. Went out this morning and it started right up again like nothing was wrong. If the fuel pump goes out, it goes out, it does not goes out intermittently? Could it be the fuel pump shut off switch under the dash going out? Could it be the ignition coil acting up? Faulty relay?

it could be several things but i would start with the fuel pump relay i have heard of relays failing intermittently but i would also check the wires going to it

And maybe your map sensor connected to your air filter. This will cause it to buck

Under the power distro box where the wires feed to their respective relays the wiring sometimes loses its connection. So when the relay should be making contact with the wires once it's plugged it just isn't. After many miles and a tough life some of the wiring separates and the relays prongs cant seem to make the connection. Result is that sometimes the vehicle wont start or will never start. Removing the power distro box, flipping it upside down and reconnecting any loose wiring will likely fix the intermittent issue.

Fuel pump relay for all model explorers is #5. The same one you “discovered”! If you don’t have obvious green fuzzies, I would say your pdc is fine. But, you could put a meter to it to verify. Your nova, I believe was carburetated. Big difference. FYI- koeo does not have a fuel pressure spec. Koer, fuel pressure should be 55-65 psi.

I am having someone of the same problem but mine is a 94 Ford Explorer XLT and it will not crank it turns over but won't crank up and I tried getting a new fuel pump and fuel pump assembly plugged it into the power and it would not so then I searched down to fuel relay and it went bought a new one put in it still will not start fuel shut off switch that is located in the passenger floorboard under the carpet that wasn't no problem I tried jumping the fuel relay but it still will not crank so I tried spraying starting fluid in the throttle body and it would fire up and turn but as long as I keep spraying the starting fluid it was running so I took it to a mechanic shop and they messed with it and messed with it messed with it and now they have told me that they do not know what's wrong they said it has power to the fuel pump and power to fuel injectors but no pulse to the fuel injectors could the crank sensor be the problem or what about if the timing is off to that cause it not to crank please help

1997 did the fuse box wiggle all the relevant fuses looked good. I do hear the fuel pump when key is on ON POS. ... cranks no start and its always started fine.

Check the ECM at the firewall. I heard water comes down and gets on the ECM and can cause no start. Pull the connectors and see if there's moisture. Put dielectric grease on the contacts. Try to fix the leak.

I think I do need to change my fuel filter because it's been years since it's been changed. Checking all of your connections by pushing or jiggling them is ok but just remember that under the fuse box has connections . Air compressors are great for getting dirt & grease out of the engine compartment wiring & interior & exterior fuse box. So is electrical cleaning spray but it has to dry 24 hours before you try to start ANY ELECTRICAL RE C9NNECTION due to bridging by moisture. But mainly Cars need maintenance to keep them running & we learn much of the repair nightmares from not following the requirements & good common seance & Ohhh Ohhhh raise yer hand if you have any questions beyond your owners manual like WTF? Wash my engine Why would i do that? I bought this truck cuz it was cheap & i liked it at first but now,,,,, DAMN NOBODY ON HERE HAS SOLVED MY PROBLEM And nobody on here with a brain says they can But ive learned alot about my car myself AND HOW MANY RUDE PIE HOLES OPEN UP ABOUT NARCISSISTIC CRAP..... i would say its air entering your system some were and when you put starter fluid in it primes it and works till air gets back in or your pump is going bad and doesn't have enough ommpf to prime it

Clogged fuel line or moisture. Or both. Run a product called SEA FOAM IN a full tank of gas & use better gas period. I have a 2000 sport 4.0 9 years now of mid grade gas & SEA FOAM AS my engine / fuel injection / lubricant / Additive. Awsome stuff! I use it on my 1983 GMC Van too same thing,,, i run better gas & add sea foam. The only thing i have changed in 10 years is the batteries , tires & oil on these two vehicles. Keep my engine compartments washed at least 2x's a year & reg tune up stuff but, same spark plugs. Winter or Summer vrooooom! Starts right up... No leaking under car either oil stains nadda!!!

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Track XLT that I drove to work and turned the key to the accessories position to listen to music for about 15 minutes. I went to start it and it wouldn't crank at all so I checked to make sure that it was in park which it was. I went to take the key out of the ignition and the lights on the dash stayed on. I had to run into work so I unhook the battery terminals. When I went back out it was the same thing. Can you please give me some advice?

I got it towed to my house and when I was under the hood hooking the battery up without a bunch of noise that I had at work I could hear a very slight ticking somewhere down in between the driver's side fender well in between the battery and fuse box and the engine. The sound was closer to the engine but I couldn't find out exactly where it was coming from. If that piece of information helps you to help me hit me with another helpful suggestion knowing more than myself on this topic. I appreciate your help 🙏

I have had a couple of relays in the past clicking a lot louder than this and they were back. I'm just struggling to get this fixed so I don't end up losing my job. I have never worked on a Ford and I have to say that this 4L isn't the best designed when it comes to the quality of it's parts like wiring and electrical parts placement. The big dilemma is trying to figure out what it could be with all of the different issues and not being able to afford to buy parts or diagnose them in order and especially the costs of the parts. The biggest battery charger I have is a Battery Tender Plus pushing a whopping 1.25A to the 12V 850CCA with it being 12 degrees here in Kentucky. It took 24 hours to get it fully charged from 8.76V after I had it hooked up for 5 hours. Soon as I hook up the battery it is lighting up the dashboard lights. Everything else will work like the headlights, blower motor, interior lights, the power windows, etc so it starts to drain pretty quickly...of course I don't have anything running like that but between the below freezing weather and the dashboard lights with my limit knowledge of this particular vehicle won't allow me much time to get it figured out. The key coming out and going back in no matter what the position of the ignition, oh and I couldn't see any red light on or flashing from the dashboard anti-theft light the evening before I had to remove the battery and bring it inside to charge it up.

These cars are problem prone. Don’t take liking to being worked on. I replaced fuel injectors and it won’t start. Next in list is putting back original. Beware of cheap parts! Original oem will save you time and money! Bought parts from Amazon and replaced as new and made more problems than fixing. Thought while I’m there might as well! Good luck once you start fixing, your into a money pit better off junking like all the other cars sitting at local junk yard!

sorry couldn't tell you. you would have to look in your manual and see what it goes to. some fuses are only used for some vehicle models and not for others but they use the fuse box for several models .hope this helps

Why wouldn't u see if it's getting fuel first? There's a spot on the motor u push it and gas sprays out or it doesn't. Then u check for a spark pull a plug wire and see if there's any electricity going through it. That's number 1 shit to test right there. Wtf?
