Hi Keep this in mind. When the clutch fan and or waterpump starts to fail on this ford. It will make a loud!! Winding noise and will also make the transmission shift weirdly. I just had this happened and i thought i needed to service my tranee. After replacing the failed clutch fan and waterpump. (ALWAYS REPLACE THEM TOGETHER as they rely heavily on each other. Now the vehicle runs like a champ. No more loud noise and funny shifting. Your info in this video is also very helpful. You can still drive if the clutch fan fails but youll hear that loud noise

Mark, can you give me some advice plz sir? My son's is doing the exact same thing. Same model, same everything as yours. I replaced the pack and it didn't change anything. It does the exact same thing. I didn't know about changing the plate above it though. I would greatly appreciate any advice to save me from putting it in a trans shop.

Hey Mark, I have a 2005 Explorer Sport Trac 4WD. Same exact symptoms you described, except my code was incorrect 3rd gear ratio. Fluid looks good. Every shop I call doesn’t wanna touch it or wants to rebuild. I’m thinking a valve body? I’m stumped. Been driving with this issue for about 17,000 clicks now, hasn’t gotten worse at all. It’s extremely annoying.

I don't know, but ordering one along with the solenoid pack should be no problem - just give them the make/model or the last 8 digits of your VIN if you are going to the Ford dealer

I have a 07 ford sport track with a 5r55s trans it had a hard shift so I replaced it with the updated servos now it won't shift out of 1st. I tried to do a manual tcm reset but I couldn't find good Instructions I don't know if it's that or if something went bad. I did alot or studying and talking to people thats why i leaned to the servos, it is a common problem with that trans. Do you think this same problem would keep me stuck in 1st? .... help?

Are you saying you replaced the 2/5 servo on the right front side of the transmission ?

@@bhauk9626able Yes yes just making sure we are on the same page. Well, I highly suspect there is something wrong with the servo or o-ring or something. If that servo doesn't apply the band, you won't have 2nd. Have you tried revving it out in 1st so you're up to say 30 mph to see if it takes 3rd ?

Hello Mark. I am looking for a bit of diagnostic info on my wife 2004 Ford Explorer. 4x4, 4.0 l V6. All forward gears work great including 1st gear. Reverse slips and will back up at idle. Give and it will not move the vehicle. I am thinking the reverse servo or solenoid pack is not working properly. The other question is if the reverse band is broken, would I still have 1st gear? Very likely the reverse servo, if you are handy enough, you could probably fix it yourself, or at least verify it. Yes the vehicle will still have 1st gear with a bad servo because first drum is held by a sprag. Peck around KZbin a bit, I'm certain someone has tackled the reverse servo

Hey, Mark! We have a 2008 Ford Explorer and we are starting to hear whistle noise while driving under 15 miles. We just had transmission maintenance by Valione. I was taking it back to see if something wasn't tighten and causing this issue. We have no codes showing. This happen after driving on a weekend trip...We drove about 300 miles with no issues. HELP!

Valvoline doesn't really do anything other than suck some fluid out and put some back in so I highly doubt there is a connection to the whistle noise. Can't really speak to that noise without hearing it, chasing it, diagnosing it . Sorry !

My 2002 early build 4.0 SOHC 4*4 has a 5r55S or W . Transmission . Lasted 257,000 miles before it died . My husband serviced it for it's life . Not a bad run . The servo bores were opened up way past tolerance . Everyone hates 3rd and 4th gen Explorers . How did over 3 million get sold ?

@@mark_osborne These transmissions are a very good design with poor execution according my engineer hubby. Just ordered a Jasper . Servo bores have steel inserts , improved pump , etc. 100,000 mile warranty .

I have that exact same model inherited from my deceased father at 72,000 mi I'm now approaching 139,536 MI and am starting to experience some slippage especially in third do I need to worry about the servo bore and sleeve or is this the way to go?

3rd gear happens to be the one gear that doesn't rely on a servo, and if it's truly slipping, it's likely a problem with the 3rd gear clutch itself. A solenoid either works or it doesn't, so not likely a solenoid pack. If the valve body is loose, it can also cause that, but pretty rare (I'd say) . In the case of a slipping clutch, the computer will know because the speed sensors will be reporting incorrect data, and set a trouble code.

Wish I could find someone like you. I have a 2007 transmission repaired by another shop. Ran great for couple years and I noticed it didn't like shifting out of first. Found fill plug on bottom loose. Added fluid and now it shifts great except no 5th. Any suggestions?

Most of the time it's the 2-5 servo that's gone bad. Sometimes you can fix it without pulling the trans. Sometimes the case needs a bushing installed in the hole where the servo shaft resides. Sometimes you can just get away with replacing the servo even if the hole is worn a little and it will run for a long time. But because you have 2nd, that may not be the problem. Are you sure you have 2nd? It's easy to miss.

Separator plate and it depends on your supplier, it may come with the solenoid pack, or it may not. Same for the gasket. Just ask when you buy it

I am so sorry for your trouble. My gut tells me something got knocked around during the starter replacement, a wiring harness leading to the transmission. That's just my gut.

Around 9 quarts if I recall, don't hold me to it. Keep checking, putting a little more in at a time it until it reads full. Dump 4 in, start it, dump in 2 more, then wait until the fluid runs down the dipstick tube so you can get an accurate reading. That could take several minutes. Then slowly add more until it gets within the cold range.

sounds like low pump pressure or the forward clutch seals are leaking so much it takes a ton of flow to get them to catch. Drop the pan and change the filter. Small possibility it's a blocked filter, but unlikely

I'm sorry sweetie, I doubt it. There is something else going on. The manual valve controls forward and reverse, the solenoid pack controls the 5 forward gears

I’ve got a 2010 Explorer with the 4 liter V6. It’s got 79k miles on it, and sometimes when I put it into Drive, it just sits there for about 5 or 6 seconds before it engages. I just bought the car, so I don’t know what maintenance was done to the trans, if anything. Other than the delay in Drive engagement, the trans seems to run fine. Does this sound like a simple fix?

I have a 06 ford explorer 4.0 v6. No 1st or 2nd gear. Takes off in 3rd and goes through the rest of the gears.. Reverse hesitates but takes a while to catch, once caught it throws me to the dash. 3rd gear slipping means it's a clutch and there is no easy fix. Did you also change the filter ?

Yes i changed the filter. This transmission is 5R55E 5 speed automatic. Inbetween the time i posted a comment to your page this transmission has been running normal. Its weird bc somedays it will slip and then the next it will run normal. I read something about it being the intermidate servo pin being to loose or worn out, is this true?

People always trash the pack but what some people dont know is that the pack can be rebuilt in under 10 mins.... the problem is that the pack has 3 bushings that gets stuck and won't release the solenoid and then it sets a code and people goes and spends money on a new pack for nothing....

I'd look for a used transmission. Have someone install it. Swapping a transmission in a 2 WD Explorer shouldn't cost more than $400 in labor unless the exhaust system is somehow in the way, and that is possible being a Ford. Even if they have to cut the exhaust and drop the Y-Pipe, $600 would be about right for labor. You should be able to find a good used transmission in the $5-700 range. If you reply with your location, I can run a search to see if there are any in your area.

I am sorry, I can't really say, it could be bad pressure control valve (part of the solenoid pack). You could take a chance and change it out and you might get lucky. The servo bore only effects 2nd and 5th.

hello, i hope you see this. I have a 2010 mustang gt with this similar transmission. I believed it was a solenoid as well. I just had my oil switched and mechanic says no burnt smell or metal. My issue is that my 2nd to 3rd shift slips when under heavy load. every other shift is perfectly fine.

Probably worn 3rd gear clutch pack but you could try replacing the EPC solenoid (electronic pressure control), they are only like $60, if it is failed, it may not be giving enough pressure to the clutch pack

My 05 explorer, 4.6L has trans problem where it will shift "wrong" and start grinding, especially if you get on it hard, if you put in neutral, turn key off, restart after 7-8 seconds, its fine again. Also if pull over, stop, put in park, key off, wait 10 sec, restart, good again. checked fluid level aok.

Not sure. You probably didn't do anything wrong unless you didn't tighten up the bolts. Did you also replace the aluminum plate that goes between the solenoid pack and the valve body? (as talked about in the video). If it's warped it could cause all sorts of problems

@@mark_osborne well, the ford service centre said it could go upwards of $3,500 as it needs a transmission rebuild..so I checked with another reputed automatic transmission repair guys...they quoted around $1,000 to fix it and said it could up depending on parts needed. Eventually I ended up paying $1,400..they had to change the entire wire harness and what not...it runs well now. My biggest concern now is, can I trust the car to give me another 100k Kms without any issues or should i sell it when its still worth something? It's already 170k kms

Sorry, that's not true. They get rebuilt all the time. But they are very expensive. They have evolved a lot, becoming better and better and able to handle V8 power in the latter years. You could call Ford and see what a factory remanufactured unit costs.

He said you can't get them rebuild, no shop will touch them, the only way is to get a remanufactured transmission. I was just asking because I get mixed information all the time. i have an 06 it runs and shifts forward but no reverse... i only have 92k on it

Sadly I don't believe it's going to be something as simple as a solenoid pack. Reverse is controlled by the manual valve that is directly connected to the gear shift. You are mechanically directing the valve body to send fluid to the appropriate clutches to give you reverse.

Currently, we need the transmission upgraded (stock one sucks) rear diff beads rebuild. Suspension is being redone. Gone through 2 alts and a battery. Stock brakes and rotors suck and sould be replaced. Motor is strong.

I don't know, you are supposed to, but at the same time I can't imagine it wouldn't eventually fill with oil on it's own.

@@mark_osborne yeah you're right cause I've been driving my 05 Mustang around and in the beginning it had weak power and reverse was alittle harsh and so driving it all day things have been evening out power if more firm now still no 2nd gear but above 60 mph i can feel it shifted into 3rd and it down shifts fine so most likely over time I'll get my 2nd gear back you think?

@@RobertYayo 2nd and 5th use the intermediate servo that applies a band, the forward most band in the transmission. It's common for the servos to give you trouble. You can replace the servo piston by taking the cover off the side that holds it in. But you must know what you're doing. Too much to type. You might find a youtube video on it somewhere.

it's been so long I don't remember but you can buy the Solenoid Pack from O'Rielly or Transtar (if you have a Transtar in your area)

Does it have manual low ? meaning... if you're driving along about 30 and you put it in 1st, does it have engine braking ?
