Wanted to make a video about a truck I have had for the past year or so and am just now getting around to fixing up a little to sell. Ford wanted to "one up" Chevy back in the day in regards to heavy duty camping, hauling or work trucks and came up with the Super Camper Special. They already had the Camper Special for several previous model years but now, they needed something even better. So the Super Camper Special was born. Running from 1973 to 1979, it was a fairly rare and unique model. So, here is mine and I hope you enjoy the overview of it and what made this unique model a Super Camper Special.

They are very cool trucks. I just got a 1972 F250 but have always preferred the 73-79 trucks. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good luck with your project!!!

My Grandpa had one (a 74 IIRC) And it was the exact color combo Brown/Creamy Yellow as shown in the advertisement - Almost like he pointed it out and said "THAT RIGHT THERE!" - He had a 390/4-Speed/4.10 (He didn't like Automatics for Towing his boat, so the 460, which only came with automatic, was not an option for him.) It would pull a house, and it wasn't made really for 75mph travel but it was a great truck... As I will explain I have had quite a few of the 73-79 Ford trucks, and have a ton of literature as well... Your Cab Tank was added, presumably because the person who ordered it new forgot to check the box for the rear tank...With a 460 should have been standard - LOL! - In my research I have found that *ALL* 73-79 RCLB F350 2WD Pickups in base form, have the 140" wheelbase w/spare tire on side, And the Camper Special and Super Camper Special were options on top of the base truck. - Camper Special package were available on most styles (F250 Reg cab or SuperCab and even 77+ 4x4 models) "I even had '78 F250SCLB 2WD Camper Special 460/C6/4.10 - Dual Tanks and Tool Box" - I also had a similar truck in 4-Wheel-Drive, F250SCLB 400/4-sp/4.10, but wasn't a Camper Special - BUMMER! - However *SUPER* Camper Specials ONLY came in this F350 2WD Reg Cab Long Box style truck. Also was a Trailer Special package on Ford Pickups and 3rd gen (75-91) Econolines (I had a Van so equipped) - Back in these years Ford was trying so hard to make a truck that appealed to everybody... So they had a crap load of options and configurations....

I realize I'm very late to this party but I just came across this video today, the big tires which Ford called super singles were an option on these trucks, as you can see in the pictures of the ads that you have those trucks mostly have the standard 9.50x16.5's on the rear. I didn't think they offered the in cab fuel tank in those trucks as all Super camper special beds add dual tank holes drilled in them, I suspect this may have been an option to delete the rear tank because some people in those days wanted a slide out bumper for campers with extra overhang and I suspect that would have interfered with the rear fuel tank.

Very Cool Truck that's a F350 1 ton with 140" wheelbase due to the passenger side cover for the spare tire vs the regular versions such as F150 & F250 models
@DarienDrakee
@DarienDrakee 2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting, that spare tire location. I had a f250 camper special 23 years ago and the spare was mounted on the front bumper (until that was made illegal) where I lived anyway. My truck had something similar in the side of the side of the box, a tool box.

They are great trucks. Another thing that folks don't know about this particular truck model is that the frame rails are narrower than the standard F150 or F250. That's because Ford used the frame that was designed for a class C motorhome chassis with dualleys. They also came with a camper anchoring system from the factory. It's all pretty cool.

I own a 1974 F350 Super Camper Special Ranger XLT also. I was wondering about your in cab tank? Mine 74 does not have an in cab tank, but has the mid ship tank as it called (which is my main tank) and a auxiliary tank which is behind the rear axle. My manual tank switch is located on the floor just behind the seat adjust. There is also a electric switch just to right of the heater control to switch power from main to auxiliary fuel sending unit. I am going to do some research….

If I had the truck. I would drive her to Central Texas with just a for sale sign on her. And I bet you within an a hour that truck would be sold. Because my uncle had the same but his was a 250 with the 400m and 4 speed. And I wish he had kept her. But he wanted to sell her. And I told him since the truck was a southern one. From Florida and if had taken her to Central Texas. Between Dallas and San Antonio. The truck would be gone in one hour. Because those guys from Texas love trucks. And I prefer the old school. Because it has personality. The truck is like a part of your soul. It talks to you. I hope to see some more old soul gals.

Yes, this was a cool truck. I sold it to a friend who was giving it to his daughter for her first "truck" when she turns 16. I figured that was a great reason to sell so went for it. I still see it around and she has really fixed it up. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Are the "super camper specials" the only configuration where the spare tire is mounted that way? I feel like i saw regular camper special with the spare tire there but i could be wrong
@mtut
@mtut 7 ай бұрын
A lot of 70s F-series trucks had an optional toolbox in that location, which might be what you've seen. On a standard wheelbase truck I don't believe there would be room for a full-size spare there. On a SCS the rear axle is so far back there wouldn't be enough space behind the axle, which is the main reason they moved it.

They are very cool! They are very heavy duty as well it seems?!? U didn't mention what rear axle it was equipped with? Could it be a Stirling 10.25? I have 2 fords with that rear & they are a heavy monster of a axle!

The rear axle in that 74 SCS is definitely a Dana, most likely a Dana 70. The unique thing on those rear axles is the left hand lug threads on the left side only.

@Epic Cars @7:17 Your truck was obviously equipped with that in-cab tank from the factory. No, you don't have a third gas tank! That filled in round hole, which was likely done at the factory, on the driver's side bed panel (under the 'Ranger XLT' emblem) is where, otherwise, the standard gas tank hole would have been located and the hole on the front was for the optional auxiliary tank. Another indication to me that it might have been is the optional Ivy Glow Metallic paint (order code=N; you should find that code on your inspection plate); my point being, the extra cost. Anyway, the point I was making was about the gas tank hole locations and that is not only was it likely special ordered, but the factory arranged those locations.
