Ford Falcon XR8 v Holden Commdore SS V Redline Track Review

In the great Australian V8 war, the Holden Commodore SS in recent years has been consistently victorious. Not only has it defeated the Ford Falcon on the motorsport battlefield, it has also wounded its arch enemy both on the road and in the showroom.
The Blue Oval, however, is going back on the offensive with a new weapon: the first Ford Falcon XR8 since 2010.
The Ford FG X Falcon XR8 and Holden Commodore SS V Redline cost the same $54,690 in automatic form as we have them here, but the eight-cylinder approach under the bonnet is different.
Ford has the on-paper advantage. The XR8 has seized the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 out of the GT that’s no longer on sale, giving it 335kW and 570Nm.
The Holden opts for capacity over forced induction, with a 6.0-litre V8 producing 260kW and 517Nm.

I was at Wakefield, that very day, driving my mate's Toyota 86, and everyone in the pits were asking questions concerning this matchup. I was listening in on what was being said, and I can tell you that the driver admitted that he was shocked at the times but the ultimate reason for the Falcon being slower is that it was spinning the tyres a lot more, trying to punt out of all the slow corners. The Holden was a lot more tractable and balanced, power wise, because of the peak torque arriving later in the rev range. But he went on to say that if the race was run at Winton or Eastern Creek, that the Falcon would be able to exploit its superior top end and the times would be more in the Falcon's favour. Would the Ford have gone quicker with slightly wider rubber at the rear? It's anyone's guess. To be honest, Wakefield suits little cars more than two mammoth barges like these. I was almost lapping quicker than both of these in my mate's stock 86. Don't get me wrong though. Just because they're big, doesn't mean I wouldn't buy one!A white F6 sedan and a black Maloo ute, please Santa!!!!!

yes a stock 86 can easily pull 1:11s, they have far superior handling than these mamoths. commodores and falcons never go good at wakefield because they are to damn heavy. they could easily be outhandled on the tight technical bits even by a hyundai excel racecar. ive been to many track days at wakefield, and the commodores and falcons are always sliding off the road chasing small cars, plus they loose their brakes after 2 laps. these cars should just stick to the quarter mile, not the right design for handling thats what lets them down.

The grin on his face when he got out of the XR8 says it all. It was like a f#@k yeah grin. "Felt faster" and I am sure if he was given more time to actually control the extra grunt on the tight circuit the the lap times would have improved significantly. Also totally agree the importance that tyres would play here, this is partly are comparo between the the differences in rubber used by each car.

XY GT Ho with over 270KW and top speed of 140 miles per hour, yet the little LJ XU1 was always over taking the bigger cars due to the extra steering and power to weight etc. :)

Do some research and you would find the xr8 has more restrictions on it than you can count. For one the throttle is reduced to 80%. Adjusting this alone give it another 50kw.

Paul Placucci that’s spot on mate. My uncle’s got an FG mk1 XR6 n/a and he wanted to put it on a dyno but he didn’t. The guy told him from Ford on the FGs and FG Xs in particular the high output models like the GTs, GSs, F6s, XR8s and Sprints etc etc, they’ve hidden a tune in the car that’s activated through a switch somewhere and he said that he can flip that switch and then plug the computer in and congratulations you now have the figures Ford wanted from there motors on each models but never implemented with stock everything. Love to see what an XR6 Sprint would have been.

driven the new Senator , R8 Clubsport ...my mates have both..I opted the SSV Redline.....absolutely no performance difference ! Infact Holden and Performance Drive all state 0-100 in 4.8 secs for all 3 and I would have to agree .....A supercharged V8 cant even beat the Holdens ...imagine simple OTR , tune and catback in my Redline ! My mates VF Calais with full exhaust , tune and OTR ...A CALAIS would eat this Ford ...all for 50k with basic mods and no super charger !

What the fuck are you talking about? Back in the days of BA vs VY v8 supercar series the falcon was dominating the whole decade until the FG came along. The only reason they started having issues was new restrictions were put in place. They knew the dimensions and aerodynamics of the falcon was an advantage over even the VE commodores. The first FG testing supercar was actually faster again so the committee made new regulations on height, width and length to the specs of the VE. The cut and shut bodge job fucked over the falcon in more ways then one, it actually dampened it's driving characteristics and aerodynamics. Even the knew coming manufactures have issues with those regulations. Problem is all because the committee is ran by ex Holden drivers they made everyone change to suit the Holdens. The commentators always used to whine about Ford winning with the BA and BF, every race "this needs to be changed blah blah blah". Oh no we cant let anyone else win, the beloved "Australian icon" must win, even if it is really an Opel with a Chev engine.... Holden fans in general are just sad fucks

rick phillips idk about that one buddy just trashed a worked VN LS last night in an XD 351 mate and about a year ago we thrashed a stock VF2 GTS in a stock FG X XR8 and for a car like a GTS that has 430KW wasn’t pulling away. Pretty horrible for a car that costs that much if ud ask me. But guess what we thrashed him without the traction control off and we weren’t in Performance Drive 🤣. One tuff Holden if ud ask me. U should’ve seen how hard he was trying to get away 😂👌. But let me be honest here, it does come down to the weather, the heat from the tires, what you’ve turned off on the car etc etc.

So clearly power isn't everything.. the Holden makes up so much ground with a better overall chassis than the Ford. The XR8's inferior chassis struggling to make good use of its considerable power advantage. But on the flip side, if the SS did have 30 or 40 more kw which it will have when it soon gets the 6.2L engine it will prove even more capable due to its superior chassis that will make better use of the extra power. I can't even say that Ford has dropped the ball with this car as they haven't held the ball for quite some time now to begin with.

Alex P I agree, power is not everything because you can't use it all the time. But the SS V's drive-ability will be felt all the time - not just on the track. It will be the better driving experience.
