"when they stop making them we're all going to be losers" yep thats very true, but more accurately Holden will be bigger losers because they will be selling Front wheel drive badged commodores! Ford at least spared us the indignity of have a fwd Falcon and will drop the Falcon badge!

+GTFORDMAN yep. Ford gives us a mustang as a performance replacement/alternative. GM Holden's "performance car" is now a fwd hot hatch that was outdated a month after it was launched in Australia.

I think it's fair to say that we Aussies pretty much invented the HP Sports Sedan and seeing the last V8 Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon parked on Mt. Panorama Bathurst, is quite a touching tribute. Well done wheels and they will be missed.

Whichever brand you preferred (or like me, happy with both) I hope you all got one thats tucked in your garage + knows it'll be loved til you die. Had a childhood of XW to XC, a young family period of VL to VU ute. Sixes. Eights. Stock. Modified. Now there's a low mileage BF2 XR8 Boss that only comes out for road trips and sunny day cruises. Until the day I die. Loved 'em all. Bought what I could afford as a nostalgia mobile at the end.

Guys, Thank You for posting a great video, quality stuff. I'm not an Australian car guy at all - I've always bought German cars but after seeing this and also seeing the FPV 300km/h, all this together makes me think "What a shame". If only Australia's attitude towards car was more accepting like it is in Germany with no speed limits and a desire to make the best - imagine how awesome our cars could have been. Our industry would still be here today and we'd be taking on the world!!!

Great vid. And how sad it is. I still have my XR8 FG ute. I'd like to keep it for the next 10 or so years. Has less than 93,000ks on the clock. Mint condition for it's age really. I'm afraid if I sell it I might never have the chance to own another Aussie V8. I have a mint condition, low ks Audi S4 4.2 V8 as well, and while love the Audi, it's awesome to drive and quicker than the XR8, it's not the same as owning an Aussie V8. Our kids will never experience cars like we did. It's all whizz-bang-pop turbo crackle now.

Perfect example of why, after decades of loyal readership, I stopped buying Wheels. Witness the focus reach increasingly cringeworthy levels of self adulation of ‘staffers’ and ‘the Wheels crew’, as focus on actual automotive content declines. Wherein what used to be a good car magazine degenerated into a gay accented fashion shoot, with the cars relegated to serving merely as a secondary social prop. The photos tell the story. More and ever larger ‘moody’ pics of the journos themselves, less and smaller on the cars. Do I want to see repeat photos of Nathan Ponchard’s jeans clad arse? Or written information about vehicles, depictions of cornering, clear interior shots etc. It’s little wonder Wheels readership continued to crumble. Well done Boyz!

***** Mate, let google be your friend. First off, Holden is owned by General Motors. In the GFC, General Motors went chapter 11 (bankrupt) and was bailed out by the US government. Ford USA sold a lot of their prestige brands such as Aston Martin, Volvo, Range Rover, Jaguar and Mercury and used the cash to avoid going chapter 11 like GM and Chrysler did. Ford Australia is owned by Ford America. So to respond to your ridiculous assertion, Ford Australia did not go bankrupt. Further, both Ford Australia and Holden have been surviving on government handouts such as the green car scheme etc. Over the last 15 years, Holden has taken more than double in subsidies what Ford has. Finally, of the two cars, the falcon has for the last few decades had much more local content than any Holden. The Holden V6 is a buick motor whilst the Ford I6 is made in Geelong. Further, Ford use Onesteel for both the falcon and Territory, Holden has since the VE been using Chinese steel as they complained Onesteel was too expensive. Don't believe me? Google it, or if you're too lazy follow the link here: www.drive.com.au/motor-news/new-falcon-70-per-cent-australian-20141126-11uu9b.html

The pollies need their head read. If they bothered to support the companies buy insuring government fleet was Australian built then we would still have them. When the torana name was suggested to relaunch. That would have been a great name for the cruze and generated more passionate ownership. This will go down as Australia's big misake.

The government have been subsiding them for years. My VY was a piece of shit meanwhile the executive's and factory workers were serverly overpaid compaired to other industries like mine. They would all get cheap cars that we subsidise for them. The problem starred with Menzies who let GM buy Holden in the first place they have been propping up GM for years while the government props them up. I was happy to see the ass end of Holden as they do fuck all innovation in Australia using crap old tech OHV pushrod engines from the US. The workers were all on big coin and many weren't even Australian but new to the country.

If you look over the lifespan of the Falcon and Commodores, in my opinion the Falcon is a much nicer design externally and internally with exception for the 1980's VB/VH Commodores which shared their design with their 'Opel' brother in Germany. This final Commodore has a host of conflicting design cues externally with weirdly shaped headlights and tail lamps. And on the inside there are awkard shapes scattered everywhere, and a horrible steering wheel. The final Falcon ever has a pleasant simple and elegant design with a sharp aggressive nose and a sleek Jaguar XF like tail. Unfortunately they literally ran out of money to update the dashboard facia which looks dated to me. If they had the money they should have the instrument clusters and the 'ICU' housed in a single panel that could span the drivers side to the middle of the dasboard just like the current Mercedes S-Class W222. Goodbye Falcon ......Goodbye Commodore.....hello American crap in 2018.

+Jeff Johnston G'day Jeff.....I told my friend in Baltimore the same thing...Sadly car companies are now dictated by politicians...Gone are the days of cars with individuality...Ford Australia developed the Falcon to suit the Aussie conditions and over 55-56 years of continuous manufacture here , initially on the U.S. platform until around 1971 , then on our own...it has developed into a super reliable , durable , tough and may I say great family vehicle but also with fantastic racing heritage..IF the parent Ford U.S. had re discovered our classic 4.0 litre inline 6 both the normally aspirated and the phenomenal turbo , the incredible V8's and this 5.0 litre supercharged one ..it could have sold quite well in the US and Canada...Reliability is the key for me..The engines and drive trains are virtually indestructable and 320,000 Kilometres( 200,000 miles) without failure is almost 100% certain..and way in excess of that is more than expected..Tough , reliable and decent economy...

+Rodney McGiveron I actually think a lot of it was because they released the Mustang, and then sorta phased out the Falcon. The first Mustang was built on the early sixties' Falcon chassis and it kind of took over. I'm a Ford girl through-and-through, but my brother has a 2016 SV and it's absolutely stunning. Sounds like a breathing, living beast. The Mustang is my dream car (2013 Boss 302) but I'm itching to own the new Falcon XR8. It's so extremely sad to see that these cars won't be made anymore. :(

Australia should come up with their own solution when it comes to creation of local affordable built cars. For a start, any subsidies must be repaid back in tax payers dollars as soon as profit is achieved. Any local talent employed at an Australian car company (from the toilet cleaner right up to the CEO) must remain working in Australia (i.e. not sell their talent to overseas competitors) or they must forfeit their Australian citizenship / Australian residence (even if they quit working in the local Australian car company). Violation to these rules should be classified as economic security breaches because Australian Tax Payers money get stolen in the transfer of Australian tax payer subsidised talent. The employee at any Australian car company must be legally recognised as a treasured national icon, rather than just a corporate icon dictated by overseas politicians. The globalists from Toyota, GM, Mitsubishi and FORD does not give a toss about respect for the Australian worker because Australian Politicians themselves (from both sides of the Political divide) are dominantly globalists who are loyal to the big corporations because of under the table political donations as shown in ABC's 4 corners.
