One of the cylinders is always firing. Maybe thats it. Some of these exhausts sound quite shit on idle but once under load they sound good.

My everyday car is the mk II ST which has the same engine. Mines not as loud as it only has a cat-back Cobra exhaust & Dream Science Perf+ remap. I bought the car new specifically for the 5 cylinder engine.. Love it!
