This Ford Fusion came into the shop with several problems. Customer States that rodents entered the engine compartment and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage. The car is here for inspection to see how much the critters destroyed and to determine of the car is safe to drive. After taking the vehicle into the shop the under hood inspection began. We found that the rodents had damages several components including the cars battery and several wires. There was even a hole that was eaten through the 12 volt battery!

Hi Ray from 2007 car manufactures have been using plant based plastic in the insulation of wires in order to cut down on our reliance on petroleum, Honda started it now everybody uses it. so wires are a tasty snack for rodents.

Rats and mice are keen to explore novel food sources: they will try just about anything. The rat or rats that have been at this car might have ended up with a sore stomach, or dead, and won't come back to this particular "food source". But they (as a species) try everything they can sink their teeth into, and when they hit on something new that's actually nourishing, they're on to a winner. Of course they can the afford the losses because they have a high reproductive rate.

I loved to joke with my GF. One nite after seeing a huge Rat run across the lawn, She and I were making a Camp site by the lake. I took my cat's toy mouse and waited until she was beginning to get drousey. I tied a thread onto the toy, Tossed it down by her feet and began dragging it up her body .... Hey Ray. We have a big issue with rodent chewing in SoCal. I found that the best deterrent for this activity is to spray down the engine compartment and other vital wiring that is exposed is with diluted Peppermint essential oil. I mix 2 parts essential oil to 8 parts water in a standard industrial spray bottle and apply liberally once a month and haven't seen any more activity in any of our vehicles. Just a suggestion and I hope it helps out. Great videos and keep up the good work. ✌

Hey Ray. I have to make a minor correction on a statement you made. At 11:20, approximately, you said that if the coolant reservoir were to leak, it would result in a lack of pressure building in the system, which would raise the boiling point. In fact, the opposite is true. Putting coolant/water under pressure raises the boiling point. Think about what happens when you remove the radiator cap on a hot engine. The coolant instantly flashes to steam. This is why an engine, although not desirable of course, can run at 230 degrees F under pressure and not boil and flash to steam.

Rodent incisor teeth grow all their lives, unlike our teeth. The little critters chew to find food, and chew to keep the teeth sharp. It's hard wired into them. Also...when hot gluing a hole....I would grab a bit of mesh to go over the hole for the glue to bond in. You can also weld plastic with a soldering iron, and use zip ties as filler rods. You can buy actual plastic welding kit, but the ghetto method works surprisingly well

Good to see tire equipment coming to the shop. As well as adding to revenue, it's going to make your customers a lot safer having on the spot service rather than 'forgetting' to go to the tire shop. Same with batteries, you can be told it needs replacing yet far too often leave it and need roadside recover a few weeks later on.

Back in the day we called your tape "friction tape" I use hi-temp hot glue to repair cracks and leaks in plastic greenhouse trays. It is the only thing that truly bonds to ABS plastic and has a body of it's own without employing bumper welding.

Ray, I once hot glued a hole in the side of a car battery below the acid level. I had to tip the battery up, cleaned it with baking soda, then hot glued the hole. I sold the car 2 years later, and it was still not leaking. That was in the late 80s. Hot glue is our friend.

Replacing the battery is the only correct option. That's the customer's problem and their responsibility. Don't take shortcuts.

I find that using a dab of flux on the wires is the way to go when using those heat shrink/solder connections!! Works like a charm!! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Honda also sells a mouse proof tape, I believe its treated with hot pepper, I think it is expensive. You must replenish the mint oil monthly.

Sweet tire machines 👍 Going rate for mounting/balance tires are $25-30 per rim in my area so jobs should eventually pay for the machines Book times are a bit low though, doesn't take consideration of dealing with lock keys and other unforseen stuff once a rim is off the vehicle

One of the theories out there is that they sense the remnant of energy left in the wiring and that is why it is always their main target. There is also the fact that they are quite stubborn creatures and seek to make their way in the direction they want.

Ray- Having worked in electronics , You need to know about the heat shrink tape they make that when heated, fuses together. Not quite as good as regular heat shrink, IMHO, but has worked for me in wiring that is exposed to rain, and in my trucks. They also make a self fusing tape we used to seal up coax connectors. That stuff really holds up well up in tree splices . That secret to getting it to work well is clean the connection really good with denatured alcohol, Then apply the sealing tape. (Coax Seal) For tight places like that green wire, a hot air desoldering station works fantastic. Got mine off the big A website and it has many uses.

According to a quick google search, all the pages said they chew the wires to grind their teeth, so they don't grow too long. Basically, they'll chew on anything to grind their teeth. That's some dedication to oral hygiene.

Also. I'm not mad about the hot glue on the battery. I love the idea. I live out of my van and visit remote places. Having another tool for a field repair in my arsenal is awesome. Also, if you find rodents to be a problem, there are numerous repellant sprays that you can use. Mighty Mint is a good one that doesn't smell like ass.

A little info for the wife unit: rodent incisors never stop growing so if they don't keep them worn down by chewing, the teeth can grow too long and cause damage to the lower jaw. Also, the oversized teeth make it impossible to properly chew food; they starve to death.

Tip for moving forks a little easier. Tilt mast SLIGHTLY forward, takes the pressure from the tines on the mast. Grab the flat and the upright and slide together. Hate having to move tines, but needs must !

tip for u . heating up those splices the one with the solder wire in them . i dont used them because u have to heat it up also and sometimes it burns nearby wires . solution to a better connection is crimps with a heat shrink with sealant in side of it .. works way better and wiring looks amazing and clean .

Hi Ray, speaking from a plastic modelling background, the best way to seal that hole would have been to get some plastic sheet, cut to size and THEN you could use some plastic tubing and use heat to melt it over the seal. Basically, welding with plastic.
