This tutorial is absolutely as invaluable today as was when it was created 6 years ago! I just completed the replacement of this sensor, taking my time and following Brian's methods and instructions. The total job was under 4 1/2 hours, and that included a break for coffee with my wife (who is EXTREMELY pleased that I just saved us at least $1200!) This job was quoted as minimum $1200 from my mechanic, whom I rely on for 3/4 of my vehicles' service, so the cost for doing this has not diminished over the years. Take your time, use a bit of patience and keep track of all the screws and bolts. Special patience is needed when removing the pressure clips from the A pillars, but it CAN be done. Many many thanks to Brian for sharing his knowledge in order to successfully complete this repair!

Thank you very much for posting this video! I've paid the dealer for this repair once to the tune of about $1000 and I think the current sensor has also now failed. This repair looks much easier than I expected and after seeing you do it, I am sure I can now, too. Thanks again!

Awesome video Brian...Just happened to my 2012 Fusion. Started out intermittent, brought to the dealer under my extended warranty and they said the AC worked fine...Then it quits 2 days later and I drive straight to the dealer with max AC setting blowing ambient...They took it for a ride with their scan tool and said it is in fact this sensor...Said it was a 12 hour job and would need it 2 days...Thankfully it's covered.

i have a 2012 ford fusion with 79000 miles. never had an issue with the car aside from stereo occasionally flips out. today when leaving a parking lot my A/C flipped from ice cold to boiling hot. now mind you the air conditioner did not stop working as that would have produced outside temp air blowing from vents. this thing switched temp from max cold to as hot as it could get. knob still on cold, max ac recirc and ac buttons all still pushed. turned car off back on poof ice cold ac for about 3 minutes. you can literally hear it switch from ac to heat. once again the air conditioner DOES NOT STOP WORKING!! it just switches from cold to hot on its own. i do not have automatic climate control i have all manual knobs and push buttons. while driving, sitting or anything in between the car switches temps. while driving down the road, i can super fast blip the key off/on long enough to make the computer to freak out and tell me the traction control doesnt work (it does) and also "check breaking system" ( also nothing wrong with it, just a result of the key blip). doing that will return ac to cold for a few minutes. in the course of the 4 mile trip home i blipped the key 20 times? give or take. each flip of the key returned the ac to cold for around 30 seconds to 4 minutes. if anyone has a clue whats going on that would be awesome!! please help so i dont have to set it on fire and drive it over a cliff!!

Just fixed our 2010 Fusion Hybrid using the information from this video and saved a ton of money. Our a/c stopped working and the couple of times that it did work the air wasn't very cold. Also the passenger side was warmer than the driver's side. Eventually it stopped working all together. We knew the compressor wasn't engaging in our hybrid because the ACC gauge wasn't moving very much when we turned on the a/c. It took us about 3 hours to get it done. The bolts behind the instrument cluster were a bit tricky to put back on. Thank you very much for posting this video.

Dude I just took my 2012 Fusion sport. I’d get cold air then hot air. Firestone has a $9.99 AC check and it was done little valve looking stem. They replaced it at no cost and then AC was blowing cold the whole time. I did tell them after to the recharge even tho it started blowing cold air. Had them remove the old stuff and put in new Freon which I didn’t mind at all. I’m just glad it wasn’t a HUGE issue.

I was quoted $600-$900 to do this at different garages. Backyard mechanics want $400-500 which I think is a bit high, but they have never done this before. Btw - I have a 2007 Mercury Milan which is the same car as the Fusion. I watched several videos on how to do this and I did not remove the steering column as I saw in other videos. I just adjusted it out and low for the process. I also did not fully remove the gear shifter. I pulled the cable out of the slot, but did not unhook the linkage and I laid it to the drivers side and it was fine that way. Everything went well but I do suggest something a bit lower than a milk crate as the dash sits too high to get my arm over top of it. Once I had something a bit lower it was easy as anything to swap it out. This is definitely something that anyone could try. I would suggest having interior body trim removal tools as you will damage your interior with anything else. I bought a set from Harbor Freight for $6, along with a pick set for $2. I did mangle one clip on the window pillar so I am getting a new one for $2 @ Ford. It took me about 2.5 hours of work to get the dash loose and 45 min to get it back together with the process I did. Everything is back together and working fine now. Just watch the vid completely get all the tools you will need together. Then watch and pause as you take the car apart step by step. Once you are done, do the same in reverse as you do not want to forget a connection or where a screw belongs. Good Luck to you and thank you for posting the Video Ford Tech. Side note - while I was in there I pulled the Stereo and fixed the dead screen on it with some solder as seen in other videos for these cars. It's a common problem with a very easy fix. About 20 min of work for removal repair and install total.

I am a student and I've never been a person to do repairs on my car. However, this video was great. I did the whole job in about 6 hours and used only a set of socket wrenches and a flat head screwdriver (to pop stuff open). Honestly, the only problem I ran into was taking off and putting on the upper trim panels. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. It saved me over 500 dollars!

This video has saved me over $1k. The shop wanted to charge $1400. I got the part for about $38. Might have gotten it cheaper if I shopped around. However, if you're not mechanically inclined, it can take a while. But on the opposite side, it is still doable, especially when it means fixing your ac in 95 degree weather without breaking the bank. I am an obese, out of shape woman and it took me all day to get it apart and I did need help at a few points. Also I have not put it back together yet. But getting the second power outlet unplugged was different in my car. It didn't have the little lever you pull to release and the tab was pointed downward so you couldn't see it to press it in (and it was hard to press). Plus my center console didn't seem to go as far back so it made it even harder to access. My mom was able to get it out though eventually. Then trying to disconnect the steering column was very difficult. I was able to unscrew one by hand but the second one was behind the brake pedal and hard to reach. So as an out of shape obese woman, it was hard to access. I also have short arms. My nephew was able to get under there and loosen it but it was still pretty difficult. Also needed him to get the bolt out after because of the awkward position. I also think this bolt was different than what was said in the video. I believe he said 12 mm but we got it off with a 10mm. My car didn't have the notches when you pulled the steering off so I'm a little worried about that when I put it back together. There was nothing to mark. My car also had the entire cluster trim as one piece with two extra bolts at the top that were kind of difficult to access but that needed taken out to remove it before accessing the cluster. I was not able to reach into the middle to reach the sensor because of my size, so I had to have my nephew do all of this for me. It was pretty difficult trying to instruct him what to do based on what was happening in the video. He's only 12 and doesn't know any of this either. I mainly needed him because he's small and has more strength than I do. He had a very difficult time getting the sensor out. Once he finally got the tab turned, it was very difficult to pull the sensor out. We tried pliers and even trying to push up on it with a trim tool. He eventually got it after almost giving up multiple times. Then it was difficult disconnecting the wire from the sensor. And we couldn't figure out where it was broken in the video to make this easier. I wish the video had shown it being broken off. But anyway he eventually got it. Now I'm at the point of needing to reinstall the dash but I just am feeling too weak and tired to get it lined up right to bolt into place. Also we don't have power tools. So after about 9 hours of this, I'm packing up and leaving it for tomorrow. I need to get an adapter to attach the sockets to our drill and hopefully that will make it easier to put things back together instead of trying to do it by hand. Good news though, I plugged in the wires to test it out and the AC is blowing cool!! So, this may end up being overall a 20 hour job with a bit of help from family, but point being is this video still helped us get here. If you're even slightly more knowledgeable or in shape, I'm sure it'll be a piece of cake. For reference onthe differences; my car is a 2010 Fusion SE.

I just had this problem with my 2012 Fusion 2.5 and found if I turn my headlights on before starting the car the ac will work no problem. As soon as I turn the headlights off the ac will blow hot air after about 10 seconds. Really weird trick to get it to work but A LOT of people have the same exact problem/solution. My question is it seems like the HVAC control panel Motorcraft part number CCM113 is what fixes this. Somethings wrong with the original control panel and looks like they have an updated Oem part number now maybe it fixes this issue permanently. But how do I know if it’s my actual control panel unit or this sensor you replaced?

I got an estimate from a Ford dealership, and was told it would be minimum $1200 for my 2007 Mercury Milan. I explained to them what I assumed the issue was seeing it was a know issue, but instead they said they would need to first run a diagnostic on it first. I then went to a "mom and pop" shop in the neighborhood who has a good reputation. He told me he could do this job for $750. Then I stumbled on your video. Went to the same Ford dealership, bought the part you suggested for a itsy bitsy $25.88. Charged my laptop, got the socket sizes you gave, a drill, and got a loaner torque wrench from my local auto parts store. Needless to say, 4 hours later......ICE COLD AIR again. By no means am I a mechanic......but your video was SOOOOOO descriptive, I felt like a mechanic a Ford dealership!!! Just donated $10 as this video saved me about $900. I'd like to donate more but I'm not sure it gets to the right guy. Either way, thank you. In less than 2 hours I took it apart and got it back together. To answer my own questions, two ways to do this in 15 minutes. 1 remove the windshield, lift the vent, break the plastic and needle nose pliers it out. Then have whoever reinstall the front windshield. Or option 2 use razors to cut a square lift the vent break the inside connecting plastic and you might be able to fanagle the evap sensor out. Then super glue the plastic in place. This would require another person to help guide you. Or, just follow the video as it's not that hard.

Brian, I'm a retired heavy equipment mechanic so I now avoid working on anything if I can just pay to have it done. When my daughters 2011 Fusion failed the Evap Sensor, I was quoted 8 hours to do the job at $110 hr plus parts. So, facing a $1000 repair bill, I had to think about it for a few weeks before coming up with a plan. Well, I've never used anything other than hard knocks and service manuals to take on any repairs on cars and heavy equipment. Then thinking that I better not mess this dash up or cause more damage because my wife will give me another "I told you so". That's when I met with a modern world mechanic (young dude) and he said "just KZbin it, I do it all the time". Yes, I gave him a hard time about using his IPhone to do his job but he said "fine then just sweat all summer, I don't care". Now the good part. Your video was outstanding and it simplified the job quickly for me and I'm now hooked on KZbin stuff. Heck, I might even come out of retirement now and charge people $1000 bucks for these jobs. I figure I can make about $4000 per day. Great job Brian! I am a fan now.

Thanks for the excellent video. Just replaced a bad sensor in my 2010 Fusion Hybrid, with 68k miles. A few differences on the hybrid, at least in 2010: - extra connector in the rear console to the 110V AC outlet- pull rear panel out at bottom and it will swing up and you can disconnect it - no splines on the steering column shaft- just 4 flats so easy to keep aligned, but mark it anyway - extra bracket and 13mm bolt on passenger side of center console- this bracket will hit the center tunnel when you rotate the dash so watch the wiring to avoid damage - instrument cluster is different- 2 screws at top hold the trim, and the lower clips pull out, not up. Then 3 screws hold instrument cluster, easy to remove and disconnect. - 3 connectors in passenger footwell- large one and 2 antenna connectors (radio and satellite) AC works great now!

""Looking for Assistance"" I have Ford Fusion 2011 Gcc AND AC is giving big trouble. If I parked under the sun for 3 to 4 hours, After that if i drive the car and turn on the AC it will work perfectly fine with 100 cooling, unless I turn off the engine. If I parked my car in basement the ac will not work if turn on the car engine. 01 ) I have repalced the Compressor 02 ) I have replaced two relays in front fuse box which was purchased from Ford warehouse 03) Technician checked all the wiring. 04) I have changed two temperature sensor, one under the hood and second inside the Dash board. Dash board temperatur sesnor was very expensive job. Unfortunately, my car Ac is still not fixed. Basically if i bypass the compressor the Ac works fine. Is there anyone who can help me? I will really apperciate you kind help.. Thank you so much...

Hey FordTech. Outstanding video! I really appreciate you taking the time to create and post this video. Though I must admit, from first sight the job appeared to be very intimidating. However, I was able to complete the task today, took about 3 hours and every screw has a home...lol. This happens to be my wife car, so as they say " happy wife, happy life" . Thanks again.

How do you know if it’s an Evap temp sensor or the ambient tempt sensor causing the problem?? Or are they the same thing? 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ My outside temp reading is wayyyyy off and my AC is just blowing fairly warm air even on Mac ac. 2012 Ford Fusion sel v6

Thanks for the info! I have a 2007 Ford Fusion, and the a/c died two years ago--just blew hot air. The mechanic tried to replace the freon, but it still didn't turn on. Around this time, I had a bad oil change, the mechanic forgot to put on the oil cap and all the oil leaked out on the garage floor. Next to it was a lighter stain, thicker than water that didn't evaporate or look like oil. I'm wondering if the mechanic may have damaged the hose and caused some leak, but then why wouldn't the a/c turn on when the refrigerant was replaced? I brought it to an "a/c certified technician" who told me that I need a new compressor and condensor (for over $1000), but how could he have diagnosed that without any freon in the system? He unplugged the compressor and then tested some voltage reading, and told me that he was getting volt reading, so he thought there wasn't anything wrong with the switch and the issue was after the point of the plug, which would be the compressor. This doesn't make sense to me. How can you determine if the compressor isn't working, when you've just unplugged it???? Please help!!!! I am thinking that he should have checked the charge with the refrigerant fully loaded and also checked for any leaks, as well as check the sensor (by checking for codes, because they would not necessarily light up on the dash?)

Do you know how to fix the mode door for the vents? I think mine is stuck. 2006 Fusion SE, my AC only blows out the bottom heat vents and the defroster vents. When I select the dash vents regardless if the heat or AC is on the air comes out the bottom and defroster vents.

Any way to get at it by going through the top of the dash? Is there anything between that cavity where the sensor resides and the top of the dash? I am thinking one could cut a door into the top of the dash and then have future easy access for when/if the sensor fails again.

I just had my system charged and that didn’t fix things. Then they told me I needed a new compressor. I’m still having issues. I might drive and have 48-50 degree air blowing the whole time, or it creeps up to 60 and even 80. The compressor will only come on briefly when this higher temperature discharge occurs. Could it be this part? Yesterday it blew 50 degrees for 2 hours straight. Today it’s back to being wonky. Help please.

Great video. My mechanic is suggesting cutting a hole in the pop up compartment in order to access the sensor. This is to avoid having to remove the dash and to save time and $$. Do you agree with this shortcut? (Ford Fusion 2009). Thx.

Can a hole be made behind the radio to access the Evap Temp sensor in a 2011 Ford Fusion? Is there anything in the way of doing this? I realize it would be a hack job but I see so many people having to replace this sensor multiple times so why not make an access somewhere? Just curious since you are familiar with the set-up.

I have a 2012 fusion hybrid, air was not working, the Ford garage said it was the sensor. $1000. So I watched your video and thought I could do it myself. Everything was going fine until I disconnected the connector by the passenger door. When I did everything shut off (dash lights) I noticed in your video they stayed lit. Everything went pretty smooth, till I hooked everything back up and no power anywhere. except for the seatbelt warning light flashing rapidly (I think that's what it is) Now no power, windows are down, and calling for rain. Any suggestions ? Thanks

I have a 07 Mercury Milan. Basically the same car with the same problem. I paid to get that sensor fixed about a year ago (worked great) and now the sensor is already fried again. I think if you really wanted to save time and a sore back and don't care if the cars plastics get damaged... You could just open the top dash storage door... cut the bottom out of the storage container with a hot knife or something to cut it... reach in and change out the sensor.... and put some type of heavy-duty tape to cover the hole you made in the top dash storage container. It's not the correct way of doing it. But sometimes on an almost 20 year old car... you really just want to get the dumb thing to work again. I never sell my vehicles. I just drive them until they're not worth a damn anymore lol. Hope that helps someone that can't afford to get a dash pulled or their back is bad.

Hi Brian , a question please . Would a bad Evap. Temp Sensor cause the evaporator core to freeze ? 06 fusion going down the road A/C working fine after a bit feel nothing coming out of vents . Can hear blower motor running ,just nothing coming out of vents , let the vehicle sit for a little while , then A/C works again . Any ideas ?

On a ford fusion, I replaced a bad evap sensor with a 30k ohm resistor on two wires on the blue connector behind the glove box. If the evap freezes (no air), then turn off the ac for 5-10 minutes. Easier than pulling the dash. Fakes the ECM into thinking the sensor if functioning. More info, mail me. Use a wiring diagram to locate the connector and wires
