When I said "this truck can't tow", I'm referring to the slow charge speed and god awful range the moment you connect a trailer. Just search on KZbin "Ford lightning cannot tow" and you will see what I mean instantly. But yes, it can tow a short distance no problem. Correction: this model actually has a 131kWh battery. @DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse: I DON’T feel like you need to apologize for driving a truck any more than I should feel guilty or need to apologize for the truck I drive. I use it to pull a trailer, haul garden supplies, furniture, dogs, etc, etc. It is not a waste and it’s what I can afford. I would love to have a hybrid truck, which would at least get better gas mileage, but they are WAY too expensive. A full EV truck is WAY, WAY, WAY out of the realm of what’s doable for me and most other Americans, especially since any option of towing is ridiculously hopeless, given the horrible range of the battery power while doing so. While I love the idea of using renewables and I do have home and trailer solar, plus a lithium “generator”, EV transportation is just not priced for most Americans so, please don’t judge all of us who drive trucks. Just like you, we’re doing the best we can.

Everyone has different needs. My 2005 Duramax has spent most of its life with either a trailer hooked to it or a snow plow hanging off the front. For me, an EV wouldn't work as a replacement. Maybe a car, but certainly not a truck. And it was -23F here yesterday, I guess the EV car wouldn't be a good idea either. The home solar stuff is cool, keep it coming!

Today, and for the foreseeable future, no battery Technology can match the Energy Density of Gasoline, let alone the much higher again Energy Density of Diesel. Adding Ethanol to Gasoline wrecks its energy Density ruining Fuel Economy and awrecks fuel Systems, engine zseals etc. Adding Thanol consumes far more Gasoline, 10% you lose roughly 20 % , 15% added roughly 30% and basically just wastes Gasoline while also doing serious damage , plus there's the wast of energy and crops, planting them, fertilising them, harvesting them, then fermenting and Distilling them, which Wastes Food, and what is probably best sold as Vodka, Whisky, or Bourbon. Ethanol Mix Fuel almost Broke my Fuel Budget Touring down to Spain on my Motorbike. instead of 185+ miles from a full tank of straight unleaded Gasoline, the Reserve Light came on at 120 to 125 miles over several Tanks. Then .I was able to fill up with Premium non Ethanol Gasoline, and got the Fuel mpg back, and got back within the Fuel Budget again. The stuff should be Banned imho. 👍

@@brownnoise357 100% correct... unfortunately, big picture efficiency of ICE vehicles sucks. ICE vehicles waste energy going through gears, revving, idling, etc . and the maintenance , while we've lived with it for a long time, is messy and wasteful all on it's own (Oil. Oil changes, filters, etc). As silly as people make it, those meme's with an electric car sitting there charging off a deiseal generator are, That's actually a reasonably efficient way to power a car. ICE are great at a optimum speed and power band... and waste like crazy every second that are not. Power delivery systems, and density of batteries need to be improved dramatically, but the leaps they've taken in the last 5 years has made EV's make so much more sense. The continence and reliability of EV's on anything short of a long road trip, has made them a better option... now if they could just, like Will said, keep it simple and make something that just works... that would be great. I'm waiting for the day we can do everything WIll said at the beginning of the video (Run your house with the giant pack in these things, time shift, etc) hopefully they figure that stuff out soon.

Thanks for the video. I have had basically zero problems with my F-150 Lightning XLT (small battery pack), so obviously Ford has a consistency issue. I powered the house for 6 hours while the main panel was upgraded last week. Also, folks should be aware L14-30 to 14-50 adapters are readily available. One point worth noting is that the free chargers you demonstrated are all Level 2 (~7 kW), not DC fast chargers (~100 kW). So, even if they were working, it would take 3-4 hours to charge a significant amount. Of course, the casinos would be happy for you to spend 3-4 hours inside the casino while you wait. A full battery charge would take 10+ hours, which is a lot of time to invest to get free electricity (and save ~$20). But, as you noted, there are problems with the DC fast chargers too, or so it seems. I personally have driven 2000 miles round trip with no issues.

The EV growing pains you are highlighting are significant and probably a good reason for why Tesla is doing so well. I follow you channel from Norway where 80% of new cars is an EV. I have driven a Mercedes EQC for 3 years without any issues that you have experienced. It's a normal car without an ICE. The charging network is very good with plenty of DC chargers. At home I have two Type 2 chargers in the garage for use by 3 EVs for overnight charging On the road I only stop at DC chargers capable of providing minimum 100kw. There are plenty to choose from. I am sharing this to say that once one get through the growing pains the EV future can become quite bright.👍

True but that's just the demand side. On the supply side, the US has Tesla and three of the world's largest car producers plus many large foreign corps, all capable of or actually producing EVs in the US. In contrast Norway has only a few tiny domestic producers and imports nearly all its EVs. So the US has the production base and the expertise to ramp EV production way up. Norway doesn't.

I really agree with your EV-market analysis. I have driven LEAFs as commuters for over 10 years now and they have been reliable and very cost-effective, but one of them had its wiring destroyed by rodents that started eating all the insulation away and the motor compartment never got hot enough to make them leave or kill them. My insurance company totaled it because the repair cost was so high. In contrast, in 2004 I bought a GMC 3500 Duramax/Allison 4WD and have put that truck through some very heavy usage towing and hauling across the country, yet have had virtually zero problems with it for hundreds of thousands of miles-just routine maintenance and wear parts with very little else to do. No EV truck could begin to cover that scope of use or that result.

If they cannot keep them working or their industrial design is so poor to start they cannot possibly truly control what they’re sending to the vehicle. Way too many variables and if you think EV is a good solution when mass implemented you’re just a moron. Imagine everybody fighting for a charger at Kroger!! Around here you’d end up dead. This entire EV trend is a joke and I would much rather have an old 86 chevy 4x4 that will run and crank and I can fix than deal with this bs. Watching you deal with it though is hilarious! I loved your first video about why electric trucks don't make sense, totally agree with all your points. When I found out they can't tow I knew they wouldn't be for me. If it can't do one of the most basic truck activities, what's the point?? Trucks are tools. Loved this video, was laughing the whole time. And I totally agree, why can't they just make a boring practical EV? I've always thought that a minivan would be perfect. You wouldn't be using it to tow. You can bring around a bunch of people and they're great for carrying large objects when you fold the seats down. Plus if you are taking a longer road trip your kids would need you to stop to pee more frequently than you'd need to charge anyways. Please, please manufacturers make a boring EV minivan!

Will, you are not wrong about the electric trucks. They are not yet ready for "prime time" in my view. I think electric vehicles (trucks in particular) have great potential, but as someone who tows a 4500lbs trailer, they just have too many limitations. First, the charging stations (as you point out) either don't work, take too long to charge or simply are not available in many rural locations. Second, the advertised mileage range is considerably less when hauling or towing. I estimate a Ford Lightning would only get 150-200 miles maximum on a full charge when towing and the places I go (National Forests, NP, etc.) have little or no options for recharging (maybe an RV electric outlet which would take 4-5 days to recharge the Lightning) - meaning I wouldn't even be able to make it home unless I was camping for at least a week. The range for these electric trucks needs to increase by a factor of three (improved battery technology) and there needs to be many more fast charging stations (working, of course) across the country. For now, I will continue to drive my 20+ year old Ford F-150 until I absolutely need to replace it, and unless the electric improves significantly I would probably consider a hybrid.

Big Bad Will Prowse, you never cease to amaze us with all of the solar equipment and Lithium battery banks that you experiment with. And you aren't just spewing a lot of flowery bullshit to your viewers when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of whatever piece of equipment you are bench testing, unlike the KZbinrs that will spend 25 minutes talking about the beautiful colors and pretty blinking lights of a basic 'solar generator' while ignoring it's flaws or limited usability or just plain rotten workmanship with no regard to quality whatsoever. On a more positive note, I'd like to say that you are head and shoulders above any other KZbin channel that labels itself as Solar systems and battery bank experts. You always put your $$$ and your real world experience to work on your test bench in front of the camera for all of us to experience at the same time that you do. You are living the kind of Green' life that so many of us are only now beginning to fold into our own lives. You are showing the world that YES, anyone can follow in your footsteps and live Off Grid without sacrificing A/C - Heat (Mini-split Heat pump), coffee makers, Residential fridge, a Microwave oven, etc. not to mention the ability to charge up your EV's from your terrific solar/Lithium system. I remember when you began this journey not so many years ago with your smaller system(s) for your vans and then bigger systems as you got larger RV's and so on and now you have 200 KW hours of batteries for energy storage, a large amount of solar panels and enough peripheral solar equipment like MPPTs, Inverters/Chargers and more to build a dozen solar/battery systems of varying sizes if you want to. Your continued evolution of this channel and your Solar website is helping a great many of us to realize our own dreams of living free from the electrical grid, from small portable systems to full RV systems like mine, up to running an entire large home off the power of the sun! It's in large part because of you and this YT channel, that I found the courage to build my own relatively large solar system for my 34 foot class A RV. As long as old Sol is shining, I can run everything in my RV for a full 24 hours on my LiFePo4 battery pack (Ten 100 ah Battleborn 12 volt batteries in parallel). My Pioneer Mini-split heat pump is really energy efficient along with my residential Fridge, but I also can use my coffee maker and microwave without worrying about running out of power...Man, this is an AWESOME way to live life! Sorry about the long comment, but I always get amped up when I watch any of your videos because I find them to be motivating and so positive. Man I love your candor and willingness to be productively, objectively annoyed on camera. Solid job not letting the rant get out of control but also voicing some solid points. I'm thinking that, since there are numerous mandates coming down the line to try and obliterate internal combustion engines or ICEs (necessarily because of their extreme inefficiency, reliance on a singular fuel source, and the flexibility of EVs), tons of manufacturers are being forced to get their feet wet without proper, extensive training/preparation (I've heard that car manufacturing is ridiculously complicated and the standard for error plus requirements for safety and related things are intense, to the point that "automotive" grade in some circles is considered better than perfection). It reminds me of what AAA game developers do nowadays, putting out buggy crap and relying on patching and aftermarket repairs to fix everything (sometimes years down the line). It seems like we're at a point of extreme experimentation, where a critical mass of manufacturers are now transitioning into this brand-new territory and just trying to figure out how to productively exist in the new/emerging normal. Bleeding edge tech always has bugs galore. I think it's safe to put BEVs in this category despite how long they've been on the market. They've been incredibly niche until the past few years. With as many companies who have their hats in the ring now, I'm crazy excited to see how the tech evolves, which I think it will do very quickly. I'm thinking EVs in 3 years will be massively more evolved than today's options. Not that that makes today's frustrations any more keen. I guess at least I think it's reasonable to hope.

Superb video! It really helps me see the prospects of an EV pickup! Thank you! Seeing your experience with all the broken charging stations made me think two things, 1) too coincidental so many are “broken” that it makes me think that they are being sabotaged. To support this, think of how many times anti-EVers roll coal on EVs. 2) perhaps there is a flaw in manufacturing these charging stations, which really reflects poorly on the manufacturer and in my mind a really half-a$$ effort to support EVs in the long run, especially given the poor quality of the app. In the end, I think you did the right thing returning the pickup. So many issues for so much cash! Lucky you have an awesome dealer to work with. Not many will do the right thing for a dissatisfied customer.

I bet it was kamala trying to plug one in for a photo op again. I've been waiting 4 months now for my congressman to send me the specs so I can put a charge plug on my motorcycle. Might as well make it able to plug into the chargers biden is forcing me to pay for.

Nah, they were probably installed with grant money that has nothing set aside for repairs.

I tow my 6x12, a totally enclosed trailer, and my 6x12 garden trailer with my Ford lightning all the time. This truck does everything that any of my previous F150s would do at a fraction of the costs. I also keep it charged using my 13kw solar system. I've powered my home on several occasions with my truck when the sun isn't cooperating.

I like solar and off grid and I like the idea of electric cars and really like the idea of taking so called free power home as we have all been paying for this free power for a long time . Sad truth is the ev s have been pushed out way ahead of the needed infrastructure because of political wokeness

Hahaha, you have my emotions up and down. After seeing the first part of the video I said, "I need that F-150 to tow until my CyberTruck arrives. Then seeing the charge system mess I say "No way!" In the mean time towing with my Model Y is only for small items. I've towed ~3000 lbs box trailer & 3150lb boat but my range is only about 120miles. Great video even if I'm emotional wreck! lol! Cheers, Eric

Hey Will ! you can take solar panels and make a hardshell bed cover that you can use to charge truck battery as you drive! LOL looking at the bed you can get atleast 4 solar panels , make frame and use panels as your bed cover, maybe even turn them on their side back to back connect at 30°at top edge then 2nd one connected bottom edge of 3rd one and 3rd one top edge of 4th and so on until the bottom edge connects to frame that connects to attach to the bed sides and across top and back edges of bed! So solar panels frame would be rectangle that connects inside of bed then the solar panels would zigzag across back to back from one side to the other ! Again the frame goes along the inside edge of bed and attaches like bed cover , the 1st solar panel edge connects to that frame then it angles up where other edge meets next solar panels edge and connects at 45-30°angle then it goes down and forms angle at other edge as it connects to edge of next panel that goes up and continue connect edges of each panel until you get to other side of frame attached to bed! I hope you understand my description, this should allow you to have atleast 2 rows of 4-5 panels depending on panel size! This would allow 8-10 solar panels in width of the bed and allow you to collect solar power as you drive around or as it sits in the sun! Hope you understand my description or it will sound crazy! Lol!

I use these charge point chargers everyday. People break off those locking clips because I found out that if you lift up that button the part where you press down it will register a charge almost everytime. Charge point stations are finicky. Someone broke all of them off at my local charging station because they knew what the problem was. And I'm glad that person did

Hey Will! Appreciate all your videos. I’m the Ford Diagnostic Service Products manager responsible for all software related issues encountered by the global Ford Dealer Network. Couple comments: ProPower onboard was designed to be used as a generator, while Bi directional power transfer is specifically created by back feed the home in case of a power outage. Check the specs as the latter may be better suited for the use case in your video. Lastly, I can ensure you this video (charging concerns) will be shared with Model e team. P.S. I’m just as much as an engineer as you. Thanks for the comments (ideas) to make things better. Ping me if interested in joining the Ford team, but you probably making more money off You tube. LoL

I like the way you think, keeping the miles down, but using up the battery, as everyone only looks at miles on a used vehicle. liking it a lot.

Have fun with it! You taught me enough about solar that it’s become a great interest of mine. Half the house is off grid, still trying to catch up.
