Since I was born in 1951 I remember cars like the second generation Ford LTD. These are cars from a past era that will never be made again. At least there are some these cars as classic cars that have been restored. These were large full size cars, with a large V8 engine, body on a frame construction, and rear wheel drive with a solid axle. The result was luxurious car that had lots of interior room and also had a quiet smooth ride on the road and comfortable sofa type seats. These were land yacht cars.

This really takes me back. Back in the day, my family had the '69, '72 and '76 LTDs before buying the downsized '79, which still had lots of room but in a smaller package, along with the added benefit of better handling. Obviously we were definitely a Ford family! After the LTDs, my Dad switched it up, but still remained loyal to Ford, as he moved up to the Mercury Grand Marquis LS for the rest of his life. Me? Well...I'm still driving a Ford!

As a young guy, my first car I bought was a 78 LTD. It taught me how to tune and work on old engines and gave me a love of the simplicity. Mine has the 400, which I plan on rebuilding with proper heads and pistons to do the cubes some justice. At this rate, I'd much rather spend the money I would have to front for a new car by acquiring an older one and building it how I want. I prefer the 71 the most for it's body style, so I'm keeping an eye out down the road for a good (rust free) survivor.

This generation of full sized Fords were among the highest quality cars built in the USA at the time. Superb body panel fit, extremely quiet and rattle free and wonderful ride qualities. I have a similar history! My grandmother with whom we lived bought a new '69 LTD 4 door hardtop with the Brougham option and 429. Shortly thereafter, my parents bought a '70 Galaxie 4 door sedan, and then in 1975, a new LTD Landau 4 door pillared hardtop. All the while, my uncle down the street was buying new Mercury Marquis Broughams and the Grand Marquis'. I really thought our loaded '75 Landau matched the Mercurys in luxury; in fact our car actually shared most of it's interior trim panels and materials with my uncle's Grand Marquis. It was top of the line, and was a quiet, extremely comfortable car. We got to cruise around in a very cool dune buggy (knowing we were driving it just for fun as my dad already had a baja bug). The LTD was mainly my mom's car, and is large, safe and nice, so it we took it homer later that day. We kept it until we left California in mid-1978, driving a then-new Toyota Celica. Correction: both the 1973 and 1974 Galaxie/LTD/LTD Brougham had a pillared 4-Door Sedan (colonnade style without framed glass) AND a true Hardtop Sedan. The true hardtop sedan was much less popular, however. In the mildly restyled 1975 models, the true hardtop sedan was eliminated. Also, the 1974 models were slightly longer because the rear bumper was moved outward in order to comply with the new mandated 5 mph standard (the 1973's rear bumper was closer to the body because of its mandated 2 1/2 mph standard). I was fortunate that working in a bodyshop helped me get a lot of great cars, a '70 Challenger RT, a' 67 Mustang, etc., but the best car I ever had was a '67 LTD, fastback, big block. More chrome inside than many had outside.

My dad bought a new LTD every other year starting in 67’. Although not sporty or sexy, they were a great business/family car. Super plush ride, roomy interior and reliable as a car can get. His last purchase was a 03’ Crown Vic.

My first car I drove. A 1978 Ford Ltd with a 354 winsler engine. I called it the blue bomber. I drove this car for two years in high school in 88 and 89. It was my parents car. That car was built like a tank.

My Parents had a light yellow '76 LTD four door, w/351M. My Pop worked for GM, but knew a good deal trumped loyalty to the brand as long as it was made in the US. Looked good, ran great, ride was pearl smooth, brocade interior. That thing yearned to be driven on trips, not short scoots around town. We used to go for (literal) Sunday drives after dinner into Pennsylvania and West Virginia and get back around dark. All three of us kids would be asleep in the backseat. I saw Jaws, Star Wars, and Close Encounters (amongst other flicks) from the backseat of that beautiful tank, while whiffing Winston cigarette smoke from the front--I knew he was awake when his cigarette was lit. We bought McD's before going into the drive-in and snuck it in. Man, those were great days--what a sedan!! Traded her for a Buick Electra Limited couple in 1979. Upscale choice, but not all purpose like that Ford LTD.

My first car in the 80's was a 77 LTD 4 door, metallic blue with keystone classic rims like the one shown at 5:06. Pioneer supertuner 3 radio with Jensen speakers and a radio shack equalizers amp, louvers in the back window, thrush turbo dual mufflers with catalyst removed. 351 Windsor 2 barrel. Plenty of room in the back seat and I wore it out! I loved that car.

I dont care what they say. The LTD was an excellent automobile. My dad always had LTD's as our " family cars". They had enough room for the entire neighborhood, they were quiet, and they actually performed well. Family vacations were a breeze with these cars. They could take all the luggage you threw at them and still have enough room for the family. I miss those great machines

I bought a 77 LTD in the late 80s for $35.. yes THirty five dollars. I drove it for about 6 months until the transmission failed. I then replaced it with an 82 Mercury Capri that I got for $50. yes fifty dollars. i drove that for about 9 months until it overheated and blew the head gasket. I junked it for $50 and got my money back. THose were the days when I had little money as a teenager but cars also were cheap and plentiful. I fixed things myself unless i found a good deal on another car.

Those prices that you are talking about for a used car sound like the early 1960's. Who sold a drivable car for only 35 dollars and 50 dollars in the late 1980's?

Common everyday family car of the era. A class of car known (back then) as 'bread and butter cars'. You could have a two door, four door or a station wagon - all LTDs, you could ORDER one like you wanted without being stuck with a package that had more and cost more than you wanted. Well built, reliable, roomy inside, and reasonably priced. Back then they were everywhere, the best full-sized car for the money. A lot of G.M. and Chrysler faith buyers switched to Ford by buying these cars.

Growing up back then my friend's parents owned one of these and they were comfortable in the back, like sitting on a couch. Our family always had wagons with 5 kids we needed the room, we had the Royal Monaco with the rumble seat in the back, loved that wagon, we were always fighting for the back seat.

I've had 2 Ford ltds so far, a 77 and now a 73. They have both been wonderful cars to me with no problems at all! They ride real smooth, better than my friends 71 Fleetwood lol. Seems to be built with more quality too! I saved both of them from being scrapped..$350 each car.

The LTD stands for Lincoln type design not Limited as far as I’m aware. The LTD was also made and designed in Australia with styling cues borrowed from the early 70s models seen here. We even had the Ford Landau which was a 2 door pillar less coupe. You can see lots of resemblances here too. Less than 1400 of the 2 doors were made from 73-76 only. Both cars carried the 351 V8, Cruisomatic and 4- wheel disc brakes. The early style finned wheel trims were exactly as in the USA.

I owned a 1969 LTD 2 door for a short while when attending HS in the mid 80's. The radio on the left side sure was unique as was the horn "ring". My parents also owned a 1976 LTD landau with 2 tone brown and copper paint. It was the car I learned to drive in.

We had a 71 and 73 Ford LTD and they were awesome cars. Especially that 73 because it was painted a kind of a dark orange rust color that was just beautiful along qith ANSI mage wheels that made it look a sports car. We had glass.packs on them and the sound was deep and throaty. I learned to drive on it and also wrecked it a bit. Thought my dad would be furious but he didn't get mad. I was seventeen. Boy, that was 1981 and we had that car for about 7 years without an incident. Then I got permission to take it to my friend's house one time and BOOM!! Smashed the front. It was never the same because we didn't take it to a master craftsman body shop. But it still looked good and drove well after repair. They had power. The 71 had a 400 and the 73 a 351. The 71 was heavier but it moved like greased lightening. Wish I had them now, even if the gas would cost me a lot. 🙏

It's funny when you think about it back then, how it was such a big deal moving the key ignition switch from the dash to the steering wheel mount. On today's cars it's now back on the dash but there's no ignition key even necessary. However , I have to admit the craziest idea was putting the radio on the left side of the driver. It must've been designed by a left handed interior designer successfully slipping one by the Ford executives just for the fun of it. However, I do have to give him his props for trying.

The full size Fords of this era, particularly after ‘73, were built so much better than GMs, were quieter and had a smoother ride. Sheet metal gaps on the GMs were ridiculously huge in comparison.
@manher43352 жыл бұрын
I've heard that they had floppy suspensions compared to their GM rivals. But maybe that contributed more to the serene ride
@warmstrong56122 жыл бұрын
The frames of GM fullsize cars used thinner walled steel starting in 1971 while Ford fullsize frames stayed pretty much the same through 78. This obviously affected ride quality so GM tweaked the suspension but the frames shortcomings still showed through. Chrysler torsion-aire gave a firmer ride but allowed you to corner quicker, Fords heavy frame and softer suspension gave a better straight line ride, and GM was somewhere in the middle.
@BruceDragon-sf1tr2 жыл бұрын
@@manher4335 true, especially on those Lincolns. The difference i think is Lincolns were more heavy in the back than that of a Cadillac, Ford use the same thing as Lincolns * not so much today. The difference i noticed in Ford against Chevy or dodge at that time is Chevy made good motors but not the best, Dodge were never too good , maybe average, Ford had either a ok cheap motor or a tough motor. This what separate Ford from the rest, they cars could drag alone even if there's a problem that doesn't stop motor or transmission right away, You can do some wild work with Ford, they wasn't intended to look as good of other vehicles in it's class but something that every can afford and count on getting them from point A to point B and hopefully have enough money in years to come to purchase that brand new Lincoln Town Car. Ford had a vision, the rest was 🧢ing and pretending to sale their cars. Ford stayed true to the script of a American should be able to buy a ok vehicle without breaking their pockets. Now take a look in 2023, Chevy back lights similar to Ford. Dodge begin to step back in the game but they'll die down again about 4 years from now. Toyota back end kinda looking like Ford, everyone wants their truck/suv to look similar to Ford and Range Rover. Chevy Corvette, stolen pieces from Ford gt and McLaren, GMC is gasping for oxygen, they sold alot but that debt is ridiculous. This automobile industry is about to get interesting. I say these will be the big hitters in 2024 - Toyota, Ford, Tesla, BMW

I got my first ticket in my mom's 77 LTD Landau 2-door; 37 in a 25 zone. ha ha. I was all of 16. I loved that car though. She'd let me drive it to school or run errands for her, which of course I volunteered for because I wanted to drive. It had the 460-4V and I mainly remember it would launch off a light but really didn't have much left once on the highway. This was of course the malaise era and it probably pumped out all of 200 HP, if that. Not much for something the size of a small home. It was sure comfortable though. I've had 2 Town Cars since then and it was every bit as comfy as those, even without their air suspension. Good memories though.
