"Worst Mustang ever made..." Yet, every GT version of the Probe made, with a 5 speed, was faster in the quarter than the Mustang GT of the same year, all the way up to the early 00's. And could out handle a Mustang for that matter as well. Yeah, it's a cult car currently, but you picked a horrible example to review. The automatic is made of glass, and sucks any fun away from the car that there is.

Didn’t Ford recall the Probe GT automatic? I think it was overheating and the fix was to install an external cooler but by the time the cooler was installed, the transmission was almost done.
@jaymorrison24194 жыл бұрын
100% right. The first gen GT was faster in nearly every way then the comparable year 5.0 (which was a TURD making 205 HP and 275 ft/lb), mostly because it was 400 lbs less and had more tire, and considerably better aero.
@80s_Boombox_Collector4 жыл бұрын
Uh, the 93 PGT only did a 15.5 quarter mile if I recall correctly. You're telling me an MGT couldn't beat that? Please. Stock Fox body MGT's were running high 14's all the time.
@Staatus_Quo4 жыл бұрын
@@80s_Boombox_Collector They weren't. If you look, Fox bodies were 15+ second cars, with some iterations doing better. The Probes were lighter, and able to edge out certain years of the fox body. Yes, I made too broad of a stroke when I posted, and got shit on for it. But it doesn't change the fact that PGT's were faster than many of the MGT's of the same era not counting special editions or updates. And as I sated, there were many PGT's that didn't preform at stock ratings, and were faster. My 93 was able to slot in sub 15 seconds at the quarter. But what does it matter? I'm online and could be bullshitting... About a long dead platform that was meant to replace the Mustang. Or I could be telling the truth. Does it matter? I don't own the car anymore. The time slips are packed away in a momento box somewhere. The car was great, and many were faster than the at the time boat anchor of a motor 5.0. Who gives a shit in the end?

It never left me stranded and it was a great road-trip car. I'm just sad that you were stuck with an auto and that awful exhaust. That car can sound so much better than that.
@jonesRG5 жыл бұрын
Facts. I had a 94 GT 5-speed with a Borla cat-back on it in high school/college, and it sounded phenomenal. It wasn't the fastest thing, but it was peppy enough for its day, and that engine note through that exhaust was most likely the best sounding car I've ever owned. And those cars could really handle. They were THE car to have in their autocross class, back in those days. They were handily beating the Integra GSRs, DSMs, etc of the period, around the cones. And it was stunning how much crap you could fit in that hatch. I moved back and forth to college with that car a few times, and took it camping pretty regularly as well. But you're right: The autos in those cars SUCKED, and whatever ricey exhaust the owner put on it sounds terrible. Wish he could've found a 5-speed with a better (or even stock) exhaust to review. I bet it would've changed his opinion on it.

Sorry but this is one of your worst and most misinformed videos, not only are you VERY wrong about the reliability of the KL v6 but the 5 speed was quicker than the previous mustang and camaro's of it's time. Again I don't know where you got that info about its reliability but the KL was a very strong motor often outlasting the car's other components like power steering and transmission. I think you should re-make this video or put something in the description about that. Also you should review the mx-6 now, not only did it handle much better thanks to 4ws but it was even lighter too.

@Default User Clearly you bought a lemon, most cars won't survive past a certain amount of miles if you don't take care of them like you should.
@MadazMazdas5 жыл бұрын
@@zo.v1601 Like I said in my last comment, if you take care of the motor like you should it won't have that problem. That being said the first point of failure for these motors is normally the rods but you have to thrash it pretty hard to do that. There are many examples of boosted KL's that have lasted for a long time even though it was designed as an NA motor, also it doesn't cost much to get forged pistons/rods for these engines and they're actually pretty easy to come by. If you ever blow your mx6/probe you can easily swap one from a 323 or 626 of which there are plenty.
@MadazMazdas5 жыл бұрын
@@zo.v1601 as for the trans yes they are the weak point because it wasn't entirely designed for the torque of the v6, but there are also aftermarket LSDs and a simple trans-saver plate will stop your case from cracking under high torque load.

David I got a comment on this video as a previous Probe GT owner. There was a ton of misinformation in this video and I'm not saying it's your fault. For the most part the Ford Probe and the 91 to 96 escorts were Mazda's with Ford's design touch. Especially the probe. Mazda motor Mazda transmission Mazda suspension. I don't see why you're saying there's a bunch of parts been sharing. The probe was pretty unique in the Ford lineup. As it was pretty much just a externally redesign Mazda. Which I think the probe looked better than the MX6. The headlight switch was on the stalk, as was the escort. Most fords of this time either had a dial or a pull switch. The steering wheel was like no Ford steering wheel it was actually pretty nice. Besides the Ford radio most of it was Mazda parts bin. Two big downfalls I can think of right away with the car were, one it was pretty expensive fully loaded it rivaled the Mustang GT and price, new. Two if you thought the Foxbody had bad interior I think the probe beats it easily. Interior especially the door panels were super cheap plastic that literally fell apart. My door panel split in two because they were actually two separate pieces plastic welded together. The window rattled when you shut the door if it was pulled more than 1/4 down. But that didn't ruin the car for me, because I don't judge the car by interior alone. I don't need fancy interior just to pay a huge sticker price. There was a good form called probe talk where a lot of people modified these cars pretty heavily. Last time I checked the Forum is dead. I know a few people turbocharged 4-cylinder. But you just couldn't get the power out of the 4-cylinder you did out of the six. And a 6 cylinder with borla exhaust and off-road pipe with headers, sounded amazing. I never really heard reliability issues with the V6 they took a beating. The only trouble I had with mine was the distributor went bad once had around 140,000mi. It wasn't the best design it had the ignition control module and coil built into it. I kicked the shit out of that motor and it never skipped a beat. The major Achilles heel of the car was the transmission. If you were to boost the V6 the transmission was on borrowed time. The 5-speed manual that is, the four-speed automatic was a hunk of shit. Usually the people in the 2**whp range were okay but once you got into the 300 horsepower range you were on borrowed time. I'm sure there could have been a fix to it but most people just kept getting junkyard transmission. Escorts are the same way with the GT, I say those Transmissions are even weaker, the manuals, again automatics are even worse. The brakes were also really small for the car. Luckily and use the same lug nut pattern as the Mustang and they had 13 inch upgrades. The car was pretty Advanced for its time suspension wise with independent suspension all the way around, disc brakes on all four corners, and abs. This was Back before everyone was pulling one G in the corner, and for that I think this car handled really well even stock suspension and steered very well. Once I got the Tien coilovers, it was absolutely amazing. They figured out that a certain Toyota transmission bolts up with modification to the escorts GTs 1.8 and holds big Power, I'm sure they could have done the same with this car. So that would have fixed the weak transmission issue. And as I mentioned the brakes could be upgraded as well. Also Forest time it had more power than the 3.8 liter V6 Mustang and was faster, it actually rivaled the Mustang GT. Not the lx 5.0 that was lighter. It was low 7s to 60 and mid 15s in the quarter. Headers, Cat-Back, off road pipe, cold air, lightened flywheel and you were beating or keeping up with stock Mustang GTs. If you got the JDM klze what the same bolt ons you were beating stock LXs, which I've seen in magazines as low as 6.2 to 60. I bought my klze for 500 bucks, pretty cheap. And with a small Port job a probeinator tune ( because you needed it to take advantage of the higher RPM of the JDM Engine ) I was banging off 7800 RPM shifts and the engine never skipped a beat. Made 205whp. I also would like to mention that the body of my car was in excellent condition, and there was from a part of the country where it snowed. It was silver just like this one. I also must mention that the Probe GT definitely needed the rear spoiler to look complete. The car had a decent following, it was cheaper to buy than the Acura integra's. Parts for the car were pretty cheap. And you got a hundred 160 horse out of the box, which I think was the same as a 1.6 L Honda Civic SI. But it was still cheaper than and SI. and with the money you saved you throw turbo on it, and you were in the 13 or 12 pretty easily. So I realized this message has kind of all over the place. But if you read this far, I say David that you find a modified one and retest it. A nice turbo one with suspension and nice Wheels. I don't think this car is an oddball whatsoever. I don't think it was worth the price new. and that's probably why it ended up failing ultimately. Plus in the five years that they made this style 93 to 97, there were no improvements made to the car. And this car, was just a terrible example for you to test. It's as high as a Subaru Outback, got the crappiest sounding V6 in a probe i ever heard, and it's got an automatic. Again do a retest with a properly modified and tuned Probe GT. If you're wondering I don't have mine anymore because somebody hit mine, RIP I'd like to also mention that when you compare the Mazda 2.5 into duratec 2.5, the Mazda one sounds way better. I do believe the Mazda is bigger bore shorter stroke, while the duratec is smaller bore longer stroke. The Mazda engine is also made for 91 octane minimum while the duratec is 87. The only good part of the duratech is you could swap out to the 3.0 from the Taurus and get 200 horse on 87 octane. I'm now driving its little brother, the Escort GT with. GTX swap, 184whp, low 14sec little shut bucket that ruins people's days.... while I work on my other daily. There you go David that's your next car to test. and if you thought the probe handled not-so-good wait till you drive the Escort GT. the Probe GT is a button-down sports car next to the Escort GT.

These things were actually really awesome back in the day. MT Car of the Year, almost 1G on the skid plate stock, and the V6 when in tune, is still one of the smoothest motors I've ever driven. If I ever see another one with the right powertrain/drivetrain (stay away from the autos here) I'd love to have another one as a project. You should also compare this with a Mustang of the same year. The stock 5.0L wasn't much faster :/ Still, great to see one of my favorite cars of all time get a little attention!

Only problem is they were ugly af and had almost no aftermarket support. But I think if you enjoyed the 2nd gen probe, the 1st gen would be a cool car for you to look into getting. Or a 1st gen mx6 like I had, they look way better! Mine was base model with the non turbo motor but I was able to nose out a 2nd gen probe gt around 60mph. 2nd gens were hella slow:(

Co sign!! I hand a 94 GT. Back in 90s.. it was quick, not fast, but quick.... and it handled great.... like you were on rails!

Brandon Deel Yup... Gen 1 GTs had a turbo and were fast... on par with cameras and mustangs back in the late 80s early 90s... the Gen 1 was the model intended to replace the Mustang...

@@LALTACH yeah I know quite a bit about them. I had a 91 mx6 lx I wanted to swap a f2t in. Mine had the non turbo motor which made 110hp and 126ft lb of torque. I did a few things to it and got it down to a 15.9 quarter. Wish I had the turbo motor, it was a bit of a beast for the time.

Ford sold the Probe in the UK in right hand drive. It was supposed to replace the Ford Capri (Mercury Capri). Weird model name though.

Actually, the second gen Probe interior was designed entirely by a woman...the First time that Ford ever did that! I own a white 94 GT and it is a damn good little car, super reliable and quick too!

When I was a kid, I REALLY wanted one. I still kinda do, like the Contour SVT or V6 manual.

"if you do that in a 3000gt it would probably break" I know that one the hard way😥

I loved them when they came out. Particularly the GT. I still think that it is a beautiful car. That it is a Mazda makes it even better. The probe was a better car than the MX6, which, I think was an acquired taste.

The MX-6 was the softer of the two with slightly longer final gear, a trunk instead of a useful hatch, and no flip up headlights.

I have an 89 Ford Probe and love it. I’m so glad you did a video on a Probe! I can never find them on KZbin

I have a first gen 90 GT with the turbo it came with stock, great car. Great trunk space, usable four seats, five speed, four cylinder gas mileage, light and fun while being a great daily even 30 years later. Never left me stranded, sat for three years and needs some work but I'll get it back to perfect one day

I can't tell you how many of these I've had!! Strayed away from the 4 bangers, boysnberry blue, tangerine frost, and Atlantic blue were my favorites. I bought 3 orchid purple 94 probe gts from a guy years back. There's quite a bit I know about these cars. Working on a deal with a gentleman that has a 96 5 speed gt with 64k original miles at the time of me typing this.
