My 2000 Ranger has the same engine and I'm currently dealing with a P0401 code (EGR insufficient flow) I replaced EGR valve and cleaned the IAC, throttle body, upper intake, changed fuel filter and it's still running rough off and on. I'm thinking it's the DPFE now, was good to see my engine on here since I can't find much online about it. I know what you're saying, I'm at 145,000 miles and it's been a really good engine for about 20 years. Oh, I also replaced the 8 plugs and wires, I'm becoming a mechanic again too

Thank you for this video, had purchased EGR Valve based on P0401 code using code reader at O'Reilly's. watched this then looked at DPFE sensor and the larger vacuum hose was off and split from the sensor shorting out and basically exploding on the one side. Returned EGR Valve, replaced DPFE and 98 Mazda B4000 is running great. Thanks again!!!!

Silent John awesome, thanks for sharing. Just an FYI, these are not vacuum hoses, They attach to the EGR exhaust tube and carry exhaust gases. That is why they are made with different material than a regular vacuum hose. (too much heat)

It is actually bleeding manifold vacuum to the atmosphere all the time. It is a minor, controlled, vacuum leak. If you smoke test an intake you will always have a small amount of smoke coming out of these and it is normal. So by plugging the atmos. port, you force the vacuum to the valve.

With an EGR code you may have a detonation problem and the PCM may reduce the timing advance a little. So this can affect gas mileage in theory. This would not be the cause of your momentary high idle speed on decel.

if energizing the solenoid opens the EGR then the vent plugging test not working means this is a different design solenoid and you cannot use it on this model.

this is definitely a problem. both hoses must be connected to that exhaust tube. There should be 2 ports about 2 inches apart from each other on that tube

No. well I guess in theory you could have a plugged EGR passage cause positive fuel trim numbers at part throttle cruise (when the EGR is supposed to be normally flowing) If the EGR is stuck open this causes severe NEGATIVE fuel trim numbers at idle speeds (rich conditions)

I unplugged the DPFE sensor and with a DMM I'm showing a steady 4.98 volts with KOEO which I think that is correct. But I noticed that one of the two hoses is only like 4 inches long and is not connected to anything. Is it supposed to just hang there? Could this be my problem? I can't see anywhere it would connect to. Any thoughts?

I got to looking after I posted my question and the hose that is hanging is the one that is towards the passenger side of truck and has a little metal fitting stuck in the hose and I can see where that fitting broke off the egr tube. Probably replace the egr tube or try brazing the fitting back on. Hope that cures my issue. Thank you for your reply.

some people say bad diodes in alt can cause ripple noise and mess with your vref signal. i it doesn't apply for this example, but i would like to see an example where noise causes drive-ability problems. i guess you would have a charging problem, so that would lead you to the alt.

I've watched a few of those particular videos but I've not seen my particular case. The design and setup on my dpfe is the same as this video. So I guess yes it's the signal wire. I back probed it and every time it read 5v. When I start the vehicle and actuate the EGR by putting my finger on the bleed as you showed the voltage actually decreased erratically. I've been getting the p1401 and kept clearing it and it keeps coming back. The motocraft dpfe is $60. There are cheaper out there. What's your suggestion?

Hi Paul, I have the same question as Tom N below. The troubles on my 99 Explorer started with hesitation and skipping upon acceleration and a P0402 code. When I measured the DPFE signal, it was between 4-5 V with the engine off. I put a new DPFE sensor and tested the signal voltage - it was 1 V as it should be. Drove the car for a day, and it spit another code, this time P1401 (DPFE Sensor Circuit High). I measured the signal voltage again and it was stuck at 5V, just the same as the reference voltage (the ground was still at 0). Did my PCM fry the new DPFE sensor in one day, or maybe the PCM has issues. I did also test the voltages with unplugged harness and got 5, 0, 5V, respectively. BTW, the vehicle runs good now probably because with the CEL on and the 1401 code, the EGR system is disabled, and the EGR never opens.
@halleffect112 жыл бұрын
Paul, do you ever check the 5V vref with the engine running? i think some people do that to check for alternator noise, etc.
@robbyjones76316 жыл бұрын
A P1000 means the battery may have been disconnected long enough to erase codes or you disconnected the battery for an extended time. Run the engine enough to recover codes.

I have a 2002 ranger and it's having that same problem. 4.0L 4WD. It started before I left for deployment in Feb. 2014. Would it be a big issue if it sat for awhile in storage since I noticed the problem? Possibly leading to other problems? It's mainly an idle issue and I found the Duralast valve online for like 40$. Should I get just the valve or should I go ahead and just replace the sensor as well? I've had it 3 years and had only one previous owner, not sure if he had the issue or not. Thanks for your time.

I've got the exact model as you've tested 98 Ranger 2.5L with probably 150,000 miles. First had a P0402. I usually replace egr vacuum solenoid and DPFE at the same time on these Fords even the local mechanics do the same. Now I've got the FORScan software and can read more PIDs than I know what to do with. Which ones do I need to check with engine running and engine off? But still I replaced EPR solenoid and got back a P0401 and P0402. Then I replaced the DPFE and it was running rough at idle. So I had an egr under warranty, replaced it, at the same time put my old DPFE on and it still runs rough with only a P0401. I thought the new DPFE sensor I got maybe no good. The intake port was clean and I replaced the hoses with new Dorman silicone hoses. However during all this I noticed my muffler baffles are blown out which had been for awhile but now they are just totally blown out and rattling. Could this cause the excessive rough idle even with the P0401 code? Or could the DPFE still be bad? It lopes really bad at idle now but at speeds it's fine. Doesn't the EGR system usually work mostly at idle?

I've watched a few of your videos on ford rangers and they're great. Just wondering if this could be the same problem with a truck I'm thinking of buying. Owner says it runs great most of the time, but every once in awhile the motor will stall out and not restart until you let it sit for a few minutes. The engine acts like it has no compression or something but if you let it sit a few minutes it'll start up and run no problem. No over heating problems with the truck I've been told. Sounds like a .IAC but not. 2000 Ranger 4cyl One other thing. Coulld you please recomend a held held scanner tool that can read more than just basic trouble codes. I can't justify paying for Snap On or OMC live data tools. Thanks and keep the videos coming.

@ScannerDanner6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is one possibility but you would have a code for excessive EGR flow on that system. More likely is you have a plugged up intake passage and a low flow code for the EGR system that has NOTHING to do with your current problem.
@Tom.N8 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, have you had any DPFE sensors stuck at close to 5v all the time? GND to the sensor is fine and i haven't checked if one passage is blocked yet but i was curious if stuck high is another common fault of DPFE sensors opposed to voltage low.
@Madasin_Paine2 жыл бұрын
I connected a vacuum hose to the vac line that I disconnected from the vac booster on the 96 Ranger, and then used it to create vac on the small vac port of the DPFE, with engine running, and the voltage went up quickly to 4+ volts. Would this indicate my DPFE may be OK? When you suggested the test using a hand vacuum pump and key on, you didn't say to run engine, but Im assuming you would run it.
@ScannerDanner2 жыл бұрын
Just needed the key on for my test, but I like yours! Yes you DPFE sensor is functioning as designed. Now check to see if the EGR stalls the motor. It should, or almost should. If it doesn't, we go after plugged passages

I'm being jerked around between a lousy Ford dealership and a local mechanic. I'm fairly handy when it comes to fixing things and I've done plenty of work on my own but I'm stumped. My engine is running lean and setting the check engine light. It's running lean on banks 1 and 2. The dealership said that it is because of 1) a leaky egr tube o-ring that needs to be replaced and 2) a leaky intake gasket that needs to be replaced. After them holding my truck for 10 days and not even calling or beginning any work on the thing I went and picked it up with the diagnosis above. The local mechanic says that my intake gasket is fine, and that my truck doesn't even have an EGR tube to begin with! He says it's just the O2 sensors that need to be replaced and my fuel filter. Says the engine is running fine now. I'm suspecting that I'll pick up the truck with the engine light off and drive it for 50-80 miles when the light will come back on due to the fact that the O2 sensors were probably fine since they were replaced in the last 4 years. Any thoughts?
@ScannerDanner9 жыл бұрын
Jb Byrne no way for me to know. EGR tubes and intake gaskets are common but without seeing your car, I'm only guessing. In my experience when you have lean exhaust codes on both banks it is almost never the O2 sensors that are at fault. Also a plugged fuel filter would cause low power and fuel starvation problems and eventually ruin the fuel pump. Of course and set lean exhaust codes. But to know if a fuel filter is plugged, you don't just look at it and say "you need a fuel filter". I think the first guy sounds like he is more on it. Even if it doesn't have an EGR tube.

ScannerDanner 1998 Ranger 3.0 been getting really bad gas mileage for a long time now. recently started running rough when im at 60 trying to accelerate to 70 or 75 mph jumps real hard up to 4000-5000rpm but doesnt seem to want to accelerate and kind of gets stuck at the higher rpm until i let off the gas. Now at idle it will shake a little and I'm hearing a lope with a light knock. Been having a p1309 code forever but never ran bad till now and now im getting p0171,p0174,p1131,p1137. Fuel filter was fine but changed before i did fuel pressure test was fine. changed pcv valve was plugged and stuck closed. and vacuum hose from oil filler neck to air cleaner hose was broke and i changed that. Did a smoke test yesterday and don't see any vacuum leaks. cleaned the maf and throttle body. Today i decided to readjust my cam synchronizer to 75 degree TDC. I can't figure out the problem. Do you think it could be the DPFE causing all those codes, it's about the only thing i haven't checked. @ScannerDanner6 жыл бұрын
what you working on my friend, that would help :-) IF it is one of these Fords with the DPFE sensor there is a 99% probability that you have a bad sensor, but I've seen restricted cats be the initial cause too. It runs okay right?

Sorry ScannerDanner , yes it is one of these fords, this particular one is a 2001 Ford Ranger with the 2.5 four cylinder auto (4 speed) super low mileage of 70000 miles.Since then, I disconnected the negative cable for 20 minutes and cleared codes that way, and so fat after doing a drive cycle it has not come back. When it triggered and set the light while driving home (just 9 blocks) it ran well, and runs as new now) Is it possible to be a possible slightly sticking EGR since if it was the DPFE it would have come back once I did a drive cycle right? What is the voltage reading on all three wires of the DPFE sensor? Key on engine off, backprobing with the connector plugged in and then unplugged. So I want 6 separate voltage numbers. Thanks! I can definitely help

What if the top wire reads 5v with koeo?
@ScannerDanner6 жыл бұрын
by "top wire" are you saying the signal wire? Make sure your ground is good, then replace the sensor if this is the case. I have other DPFE testing videos that may more closely match what you are describing. With an open in the sensor signal circuit, it is normal to see 5v on the signal wire on some systems. This is a bias voltage that is being sent down the signal circuit from the ECM.
@Usmanthemecano6 жыл бұрын
ScannerDanner it constantly reads 5v with the connector plugged or without. I just put in a brand New motocraft dpfe15 and absolutely no change. What's the next step from this point? ECM? Btw I just bought a bidirectional scan tool but I will need time to learn how to use it thoroughly
@ScannerDanner6 жыл бұрын
give me voltage readings on all three wires with the key on, with the sensor plugged in (back-probing) with voltmeter connected to battery negative. Do NOT replace the ECM!!!
@Usmanthemecano6 жыл бұрын
ScannerDanner disregard the last reply. I wiggled the wires and there it was!! Harbor freight butt connector failed again.... I reattached the wire and koeo is now 0.6v...So im returning this new motocraft part lol Btw while I was test driving the vehicle the dpfe voltage never went past 1v is that normal? Rpm rose up to 2500 on the drive.
@ScannerDanner6 жыл бұрын
Nice! During driving there are conditions that need to be met for the EGR valve to be commanded on. This is what you want to pay attention to. If the EGR valve is being commended on and your DPFE sensor voltage doesn't change, you have other problems.

Hey Paul on the 3.0 engine for these Rangers what's the best tool to use when you have clogged EGR passages? I applied vacuum to the valve, no rough idle, and i can hear it open and close. I removed the valve and there was carbon but i suspect there's a-lot more. Any thoughts? Thanks
@ScannerDanner9 жыл бұрын
Remove the throttle body bro. The passages run behind it. You'll see it as soon as you unbolt it. That's where they plug up on these fords
@ahill007ny9 жыл бұрын
This one has the throttle body and intake as one unit :( Do you think im going to have to pull the intake?
@ScannerDanner9 жыл бұрын
Can you take a picture of it and send it to me. Give me one of the egr location and the throttle body. You may be able to open the throttle plate and get the the passage behind it?
@ScannerDanner9 жыл бұрын
Or fish a coat hanger into the intake passage of the egr (valve removed) and try to knock it out. Do it with the engine running so you know. Plug the exhaust port so you don't burn your hand

Oh no! Two thumbs down? What am I ever going to do 😂 If you didn't find value in what was shown here, you're looking for a silver bullet and are not capable of testing the circuits yourself. You just want to know what part to change and so you're on the wrong channel for that. So do use both a favor and move along

For those of us that aren’t mechanics, we could better understand this if you showed exacty WHAT it is you’re putting your finger on one minute into the video. Otherwise, the video is useless.

Got a 99 ranger 2.5 will start but immediately dies.. if u unplug the map sensor it runs but rough. Someone also changed the ecu from one from a junkyard.. same year truck but I’m thinking he probably didn’t have it programmed to the truck. Could that be my issue??? Thanks
@ScannerDanner2 жыл бұрын
Had a 99 ranger kick my ass before. It was a flex fuel engine that was dropped into a non flex fuel truck. Injector flow rates are HUGELY different for engines that run E85. Food for thought.
