Re-check the DPFE like it shows in the video. The hoses going to the DPFE are special heat resistance type. Be sure you are using the correct hose. If the hoses look like they have gotten hot or the DPFE looks a little melted, it means your catalytic convertor is restricted. Did you clean the tube going to the exhaust pipe? When you do make sure there is flow completely through. There is a small orifice inside the pipe that plugs. Stay in touch, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Thank you for the kind words. If you are melting sensors and have a lot of pressure on the hoses, it usually means your catalytic convertor is restricted. I suggest getting the back pressure on the exhaust system tested. I hope this helps and stay in touch, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

I'm a semi retired electronic tech. This was very accurate. My wife's 1999 4.6 Liter Ford Expedition has an intermittent more annoying than really worrisome problem. it gets a little rough. it seems to affect shifting..but not always. Auto Zone scanner said it needed to have the DPFE replaced. I am not a parts replacer as such.. I want to know how something works and how it's designed. I now see why the EGR is so necessary.. It is a safety engenering part to prevent damage. I subscribed and rang the bell. I am going to your site.

1. Disconnect the shift linkage at the transmission and move the linkage on the transmission by hand. If the transmission still won't engage, there is an internal transmission problem. 2. If the transmission does engage when moving the linkage manually, check for a problem with the shift lever or cable. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Check voltage of the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor. Normal voltage should be 0.5-1.2 volts Key On Engine Off (KOEO) or at idle. If voltage is out of range, check voltage again with the sensor disconnected, it should read 5.0 volts. If it does, and there is 5.0 volts measured between the Brown/White (BR/WT) and Grey/Red (GY/RD) wire, replace the sensor. Our largest customers are AutoZone and Carquest. Thanks, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

The specs for your DPFE should be the same as in the video, 1.0 volts. If the hoses are blowing off and get very hot it means the exhaust system is restricted. This usually means the catalytic convertor is plugged. To be sure have the back pressure on the exhaust checked. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 12 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the catalytic convertor is restricted. Have you had the back pressure in the exhaust checked? One this you can do to do a quick check is remove the front O2 sensor(s). If there is an improvement , most likely the cats are plugged. Don't leave the O2s out for very long. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

@MsMlarrea 3. Check for a possible backpressure issue which may be damaging the sensor because of exhaust heat melting the sensor internally. To check this, connect a vacuum/pressure gauge to the DPFE sensor tube that connects to the sensors "HI" port. Monitor the reading while brake-torquing the engine. Backpressure should not exceed 2 PSI. 4. If the DPFE sensor connector is ok and there is not excessive exhaust backpressure, replace the DPFE sensor.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 11 жыл бұрын
Is the catalytic convertor(s) partially plugged? Is this why you exhaust leaks? This will cause the P1407. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 13 жыл бұрын
@MsMlarrea 1. Inspect the connection of the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor for good contact to the sensor. 2. Check the Brown/White (BR/W) wire for 5.0 volts to the sensor when the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor signal reading is high, and, that the Grey/Red (GY/R) wire is a good ground. @IrnMaiden304 Yes they were aluminum cases. In fact we manufactured and sold the aluminum housing until the foundry stop producing them. Reason? On some application the plastic replacement needed a new wiring harness, we wanted to produce a direct replacement for as long as possible. the reason ford updates was because of RFI problems. We updated the circuitry but stayed with the aluminum housing as long as possible. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

3. Disconnect the White hose from the vacuum control valve and plug it, connect a vacuum gauge to the port, and with the engine idling there should be at least 6.7" of vacuum. 4. Disconnect the EGR solenoid and apply power to one terminal and ground to the other, the solenoid should block any flow, remove the voltage and ground and vacuum should flow through the valve. It is common for the EGR solenoid to fail. Let me know please, Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Be sure to check the DPFE like I told you. 9 times out of 10 the P1407 is a defective DPFE. Also closely check the hoses coming up from the exhaust. If the Catalytic Converter is restricted the hoses will deform and crack. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

If some of the ports are restricted, you will get excessive flow on the other open port(s). This is why I asked for the codes. When this occurs you will also most times get misfire codes. The fact that you opened the EGR at idle and only got rough running and not an engine kill, makes me think there is some restriction somewhere. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 13 жыл бұрын
@svt0304cobra You have to get enough misfires in a certian time period to set a code. It might be right on the edge. When you say you smell rotten eggs, it means either it is running rich or you have a misfire or both. Please clean the MAF. Please do as I am telling you, it will give a good starting point if not the answer. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

What code(S) are being set? The PFE sensor should have near one volt on one of the pins with it plugged in. Check it that way by back probing it with a pin. Your engine has small orifices above the intake valve that let the EGR gasses into the cylinder. It is common for these orifices to become blocked. What are the codes? Very informative video!! I have an 01 explorer 4.0 V6 and i had issues with P0401. Replaced the EGR valve, DPFE sensor, cleaned all the vacuum lines to/from EGR system and, intake gaskets. And the problem went away for about 3mos (just to pass state emmissions test) and came back the same. Any ideas? I have noticed a major drop in mileage even after using lucas fuel treatment on every oil change...

thanks for the reply mark!! i checked the DPFE and im getting 1.18-1.22V on it. the EVR shows good resistance and voltage. i ran a stiff copper wire and carb cleaner through the tube that comes from the exh manifold to the EGR vavle to make sure it is clear. i also took out the O2 sensor before the cat and it is almost white. is this a result of overheating cats due to running it richer because of the low egr flow??

Hi Mark. I have 93 Ranger 3.0L V6 Auto Transmission. I am getting check engine code 332. Insufficient EGR flow detected . I tested the DPFE sensor. First reading was 0.845v and the other reads 5v. Does this reading suggest the DPFE sensor is bad? Please help. Thx

@GoTechTraining 10 жыл бұрын
Check the voltage of the Pressure Feedback Exhaust Gas Recirculation (PFE) sensor. The voltage should indicate a reading of 3.2-3.3 volts on the Brown/Light Green (BN/LG) wire of the sensor connection. If the voltage is not within the specified range, verify that the Brown/White (BN/WH) wire of the sensor is showing to be a 5.0 volt reference and that the Grey/Red (GY/RD) wire is showing to be a good ground when the sensor is connected. If the VREF signal and ground check to be ok even though the PFE sensor voltage is out of range, it would suggest that either the PFE sensor is defective or it has a connection issue to the wiring harness. From your test results, if properly performed, yes it appears the sensor is defective. Try lifting the EGR valve while the engine is running (idling). The engine should die when you do this, it will prove the passages are open. If the RPM does not change (drop) the passages are restricted. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

markjhicks I checked the voltages as advised. I still get the same reading. The voltage reading that you mention of 3.2 to 3.3v is where I am getting 0.845v? This voltage of mine should be 3.2v correct? The EGR valve is new on the truck. I checked my ground wire to battery terminals and to chasse. Connection is good. The pressure coming from the Exhaust on both the lines are good when I put my finger on it. Waiting for your reply. Thx

It will range depending where the EGR flow is at. Here is a testing procedure.... SIMULATE THE DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FEEDBACK EGR SENSOR SIGNAL WITH A VACUUM PUMP Disconnect the downstream differential pressure feedback EGR sensor port hose at the ESM. Verify the hose and port are clear and free of obstructions. Connect a vacuum pump to the downstream differential pressure feedback EGR sensor port. Key ON, engine OFF. Access the PCM and monitor the DPFEGR PID. Apply 27 - 30 kPa (8 - 9 in-Hg) vacuum to the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor and hold for 10 seconds. Quickly release the vacuum. The DPFEGR PID voltage must be between 0.25 and 1.3 volts with the key ON and no vacuum applied. The DPFEGR PID voltage must increase to greater than 4 volts with the vacuum applied. The DPFEGR PID must drop to less than 1.5 volts in less than 3 seconds when the vacuum is released. ~Ryan

You will probably see the wires to the replacement harness are all one color. This is because it fits several different models and years and each of them have wiring with different colors. First cut the connector from the vehicle about an inch from the connector it self. Then lay the connectors side by side and match up the wires. You will then see which wire goes to which colored wire on the vehicle. I hope this helps, if you need further assistance let me know or give us a call at Wells. 1-800-558-9770 7AM to 7PM M-F Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Hello. I bought a 2003 Ford Taurus SES 3.0 24 value dohc. The egr pressure sensor is cracked an right hose gone. I found it today looking for a vacuum leak because car runs rough. What problems would or will this cause. I'm not driving the car till I fix it. Great car low miles family one owner vehicle. Thank you for your time.

Without a functioning DPFE, the car will have a check engine light and will not pass emissions. These usually are a pretty easy fix. If the hoses are damaged or worn I would suggest replacing them as well. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

I have a 92 ford taurus that has a problem with the transmission engaging. Periodlically when I drive it, then turn it off, then turn it back on again, it won't engage in reverse or drive even though the gear shift is moving the gears (It will move when pushed, in neutral). As well, sometimes when I am hainvg this problem, if I shift it into reverse first, back up then shift into drive it will move. ANY idea what is causing this??

Most common cause for this code on your vehicle is the DPFE sensor. Spec is 0.4 V to 0.65 V for the original metal type sensor and 0.4 V to 1.2 V for the Black plastic sensor. If out of range, replace the sensor. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

Sounds like you have a cooling system problem. I hope it's not cold where you live. Too much water and not enough coolant will lead a cracked block if it freezes. Address your coolant leak/or burning first. Then worry about your cooling fans. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

I was getting P0420 code on my 03 vulcan. The EGR stuck open and melted a hole in the plastic intake plenum. The back cat by the firewall had melted down and plugged up, causing back pressure in the exhaust to force the EGR open all the time until the hot exhaust gasses melted through. I had excessive oil consumption (burning oil) and a failing fuel pump that was causing misfires. I had to drop the tank to replace the fuel pump and I put on new valve seals. If you do indeed have a bad cat, there's always a reason behind why it went bad. Simply replacing the Y pipe and cats will mean a repeat of the same situation in a few weeks. Timing, internal oil leaks(valves, or valve seals), misfires(coil, wires, spark plugs) all have to be rectified. Again, just to be clear, misfires, oil blowby, and heat are all cat killers! You're already at a disadvantage becase 2 of the 3 cats are in the engine bay where heat buildup is much worse. One of those 2 is the likely culprit because of oil, or unburnt hydrocarbons is hitting them first. When you're having these kind of symptoms, it can get expensive to get your car all straightened out.

One more thing. A muffler shop will use the following method: drill a small hole before and after the suspected bad cat and measure the difference in pressure with the vehicle running. If it's plugged, the hole after the cat would have a lot less pressure coming out of it.

Hello Dave, below is the test procedure. It is usually due to clogged passages. 1. Check the Pressure Feedback EGR (PFE) sensor voltage, Key On, Engine Off (KOEO). Voltage should indicate 3.2-3.35 volts. 2. Start the engine and recheck the sensor voltage. It should still indicate 3.2-3.35 volts. 3. Open the EGR valve with a hand-held vacuum pump when the engine is idling. With about 8-10" of vacuum applied, the sensor voltage should decrease to less than 1.0 volt. 4. If there is very little change in the engine RPM and the sensor voltage, remove the intake plenum from the lower intake. Inspect and clean the passages of the lower intake which allow for exhaust to flow into the intake from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. 5. If the engine runs very rough but the voltage does not change, verify that the pressure hose of the sensor is connected to the exhaust flow pipe feeding the EGR valve and replace the sensor. 6. If the PFE sensor voltage decreases as stated and the engine RPM is severely affected, perform the Key On, Engine Running (KOER) self-test while monitoring the vacuum signal to the EGR valve. At some point during the self-test there should be at least 2" of vacuum to the valve. 7. If there is never a vacuum signal to the valve, backprobe the Brown/Pink (BR/PK) wire at the EGR Vacuum Regulator (EVR) solenoid and ground it with the engine idling to verify vacuum is then present to the valve. 8. If there is no vacuum to the valve, verify manifold vacuum to the EVR solenoid and that the green vacuum line is not restricted or broken from the solenoid to the valve. 9. If the vacuum lines check to be OK, replace the solenoid. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

@GoTechTraining 8 жыл бұрын
The hoses are stuck onto the sensor? If they are melted at all you should replace the hoses with replacement ones. These are not just standard rubber hose. Also if the hoses are melted there could be issues in the exhaust system. If they are simply just stuck on there, a hose removal pliers can help. I have run into vehicles where I had to cut the hoses to get the part off. Hopefully you are able to get yours apart. Let me know how this goes. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

Commonly when the hoses are melted it is caused by excessive exhaust back-pressure. Most of the time that is due to a plugged up catalytic convertor, or a plugged up muffler. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

Hey Ed, I am going to guess your Commodore VP is the same as our GM products in the states. In that case two common causes come to mind. One crankshaft position sensor. Should be close the the harmonic balancer. Two is the computer. Start the engine and let it get warm. With the engine running, tap on the crankshaft sensor and the computer. Be careful tapping on the crankshaft sensor. You will need a long extension to do it. Do not let the extension touch the belt or pulley. Mark Hicks Wells Vehicle Electronics

A p0412 is related to the secondary air injection system. Simply put, you car uses an air pump, that on cold starts forces air into the catalytic convertor to allow the cat's to warm up faster. This code is showing that the system has a failure in it. Could be a bad air pump, or a bad solenoid or something of the sort. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
