Land Rover Defender up 2008 to 2016 with the FORD PUMA Engine was fitted with the MT82 Gearbox which is a lighter 4x4 suffering also from multiple bearing failures in the MT82 GEARBOX in addition to the unlubricated output shaft poor design fault . This is a very common fault and I definitely would not buy one.

PX2 2017. I did install an ultragauge in mine and checked trans temp. It was always running over 90, as per the thermostat and the engine temp went up on hot days. Trans would get to 110. So, fitted cooler kit and dummy thermo and it now alway runs under 80 and the engine temp never hits 90 now. Great investment in hot Oz. Change trans fluid every 40-50,000 never any metal. Was more concerned about EGR unit, which I just replaced with new modified Ford component. 140,000. Love it. Cleaning intake manifold last week gave it a boost. Love your vids. Cheers PP

@@BCBtrucks64 Ahh, yeah, sorry mate, didn't make it clear it's an auto. Just got carried away, this issue riles me a bit. The manuals and autos get a bad wrap but I think the lack of oil changes and temps cause most probs. Never spoken to a mechanic who thought the lack of servicing Ford recommends is a good idea. Worn out oil isn't going to do any bearings any favours. Sorry for the distraction. I just don't get why Ford think it's okay not to change oils more regularly, in both the manual and auto. Seems to be asking for trouble. Cheers PP

@@mrpoopypants9586 the extended oil change intervals are to keep the capped price servicing costs down. Only has to last the warranty period.

Got a PX3 2021 model 3.2 with the six-speed automatic it's now got 185000 km Touchwood still going strong but I keep the maintenance up to it and the transmission fluid has been changed I'm about to change it again and the vehicle has done 180 thousand kilometres of mostly towing my off-road caravan and mostly Highway driving no issues once again Touchwood and fingers crossed

Mine bit the bullet at 205,000kms (was the cluster bearing). A couple days after upgrading to a heavy-duty clutch.

I’ve got the same Ranger as yours with 330,000kms and never done a clutch, gearbox is mint, no noises and it’s done a lot of towing. Just do your oil changes and that goes a long way. “ That’s right isn’t it Brian”😂

My 2017 Ranger had the slave cylinder fail at 96,000km. We changed out the clutch while the gearbox was out to replace the slave. It has a bearing noise now when in neutral ,and is difficult to select 1st gear. My Ranger has always been serviced at 10,000k's Slave cylinder should have been a warranty but it failed 3 days before Xmas and Ford were booked out until February, so my own mechanic did the work and I had my car back for Christmas.

Why does the DEI have to womansplane first, then the guy who obviously does the work confirms she understood her script. 😂

Hello, I’m a transmission mechanic, I own a 2016 Mazda BT50 Automatic (6R80) one of the last non DPF models. If you like to see it my mate made a fun KZbin video of my mates and I going to high Country kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqGsgqSnq9iqmdU Anyway I’ve built quite a bit of MT-82s. What I commonly see is bearing failure mainly the front input bearing. The OEM bearings are sealed bearings meaning they are only lubricated by packed grease and are not packed enough, But the upgraded bearings from Japan has better grease and well packed. Sometimes the MT-82 can brake teeth mainly 6th gear caused by under heavy loads.(Very heavy canopy, Towing, eg). So try not to stress out 6th gear too much!!. I’ve haven’t seen a front plug get spat out yet. In conclusion I would say they are not a bad gearbox. 100% failure rate is overkill. The most common Km of bearing failure I’ve seen is like 185k some can do more or less depends on the history of the car and how you drive it!!. My recommendation is regular servicing!!! Every 60-70k- If the car is mostly a towing vehicle. 80-100k- If it’s a daily run around car. It never hurts to service it earlier too. If you do that the transmission will love you and will try it’s best to stay together. Thanks for reading 😊

Px1 @ 200k original clutch always towing , a few months ago thought it was getting noisy but it was the tyres 😊😊😊😊 . The original owner did state that he did get the front bearing changed in the box at around 30k as he was a bit sus about it making a little bit of noise done under warranty. Not sure if Ford used OEM bearing in the replacement

I watched this a couple of days ago as well ,I did check on the internet and the gearbox they are showing you I believe it to be used from 07/15 on and is called a spline type.I have a 2013 bt-50 and the top of my gear box there is a pin type attachment for the gear stick .From what I can find it was fitted from 2012-2015 , so maybe this box has problems.

Is there a way to get rid of the RPM match when shifting UP in these things. Bloody annoying and no doubt puts stress on the drivetrain when you get out of sync.

Misinformation is everywhere but good maintenance with 20,000 interval changes will see a box go 500,000 k and still going ok but not getting into mud slinging and each to their own circumstances i guess

Yeah bro looks like another scam hating on the ranger. 2015 manual px ranger with 355,000 km on the clock and no issues with the gear box. I bought it brand new ,added bigger inter cooler, 3inch straight exhaust, stage 1 turbo 3 inch lift with a diff drop with all the mods and gear box never been opened. So just change the 3.7ltr oil on a regular basis. Keep the oil clean boys it’s built ford tough….keep up the good 👍 work buddy
