It's a great truck- Yes it's true if i used my pickup for long camping trips that included a camper / trailer/boat, this would not be the right pickup. for sure. You've made that point super articulately. But it's just a fact the majority of truck owners don't do those things... including me. But I will NEVER pay an insane dealer markup, MSRP or no thanks. My camping is done with a simple tent and gear that can be put into the bed. For me, that makes this a great fit.

There are still some dealers that are selling at MSRP. You just have to look for them. In my local area just 1 out of 4 dealers aren't marking up their vehicles. Never have never will. Probably why it's the largest ford dealership in my area.

The example of the gas generator replacing the Ford lightning as an electricity source is really not apples to apples. If one has a fully charged F150 on hand, they are always at the ready for up to 10 days back up. One has to continually swap out fresh gas, and LOTS OF IT (like what, 50-100 gallons) if they wish to power their home for 10 days on a gas generator.

Let's be honest, how often does power go out for the average joe? Once every 2-3 years and for an hours or two? This is just a gimmick, and an expensive one. Sure, there likely are a few people that would find use for it, but to the masses this feature is pointless and pricy. But then... people buy trucks to drive them empty year round... why not add another useless feature to the mix?

I enjoy your videos Tom. According to the The U.S. Energy Information Administration,renewables were neck and neck with coal in 2021. Coal 22% and renewables at 21%. The rest being nuclear and natural gas. As we push towards EVs it’s so important not forget about the massive increase that’s needed to power them which hopefully will be primary renewables. I was surprised that solar was only 3% in 2021. There is a lot of work to be done to get greener. I’m really excited about the full size Transit van EVs. That’s a large commercial market that can really use EVs practically in many places.

I found it really smart how they did the Mach-E as new and the Lightning as super familiar. I would love a Maverick plug-in hybrid if we can't get electric fully. From all the research I've read, even if it isn't green electricity powering them, EVs are better than ICE within about a year.

Recent patent filings suggest an EV Maverick is in development. If they can really keep the cost down on that with the help of LFP batteries it might just become one of their most popular vehicles ever. Also yes, EVs repay their carbon cost of construction pretty fast, even if powered by coal plants simply due to energy generation and use being drastically more efficient than an ICE drivetrain.

Tom, sorry to argue, but as an owner of the Lightning it is nowhere NEAR as quiet as a Lexus LS! I've driven several models of each. Here is why: the wind noise turns on high in the Lightning around 65 mph, in an LS that also has laminated windows it's more like 90 mph. The Lightning also has the high frequency motor noise which is frankly very annoying. Windows up all the time for me. The LS drivetrain is low frequency and inoffensive. I even notice noise from the inverters leaking through the firewall into the quiet Lightning cabin. While it's initially impressive to get into a big dampened EV like the Ford, the LS is SOOO much more refined from a NVH perspective.

People are flipping these like mad getting some 10-20k over sticker. Same with the new Hummer and Rivian models. If I wanted an EV truck, I might have to wait a year or more for prices to get practical again.... not that 70k for a truck is practical. Ford did a great job on this, no doubt, and when you combine that with the new Maverick, they're on a roll. The consumer benefits in the long run... assuming they'll ever be able to buy one. The world is changing fast and I am seeing more and more EVs in my neighborhood. Still, I do hope they make some progress on synthetic fuels so we will still have the option to own an ICE car without harming the environment. I have my eyes set on a used 2007 911 at some point and they sound glorious.

I would love it if they made a 2-door EV Lightning compact pick-up!!! Just like the SVT one back in the day. I know that EPA regulations (wheelbase to mileage ratio restrictions) keeps car companies from making these 2-door trucks anymore, but here is the loophole now - building the 2-door trucks and making them fully electric.

Most people seem to forget towing with a gas or diesel vehicle the range can Also be cut nearly in half. I believe the lightning is a great vehicle to be used for anything a gas or diesel vehicle is used for locally, but until more charging stations are installed and especially one's you can drive through stations, along with lower electrical charges at public charging stations , the f-150 lightning just isn't a vehicle well suited for long distance trips.

I'm torn. I got called this week by my dealer to expext to be in the next wave to order a MY23 Lightning. I was a day 1 reservation holder in the first few minutes. Truthfully I expected to have one now, but my dealer was only allocated 3 and I'm sitting next in line at 4/210. I just purchased a 22 Lariat 502a powerboost in the meantime. I've been really impressed with the efficiency of the hybrid, the pro power generator , and other features. I do not tow, I mainly use it as a daily family hauler in suburbia. I'd be a perfect case example for going EV. The hybrid is so compelling after living with it for a few weeks. Pricing is keeping me wondering about going EV now. A similarly equipped Lightning Lariat to my powerboost is a tad over 10k more before tax incentives ( I paid well below MSRP on my Powerboost order). That would buy me a lot of gas and leave me the flexibility of road tripping in ease as well as being able to tow no issues if we need to.

TFT does a nice review of the towing inabilities of electric pickups. But this was a very good review of the total package. I like how Tom is specific about things he likes and doesn’t like. I feel that a vehicle of this magnitude should be able to easily drive, with a full load of passengers and gear, from Seattle to Coeur d’Alene without stopping. That’s 300 miles. Pretty iffy in summer.

Excellent informative video as always. This is a glimpse of the future. As long as you don't plan to do a lot of very long distance heavy towing you can make a good case for this if you want an EV truck. Setting the additional cost for hook up aside, yes, Ford claims you can run your house on this for 3 days in the event of a power outage. That may not be enough in some areas of the country. Then you have no power in your house or vehicle. IMHO the hybrid w/7.2 kw option may be the better choice if you are worried about powering your house. One of the neatest quirky features is actually having a trunk. Probably put a crimp in some bed box sales. I saw another channel do a towing test on the Lightning with 10,000 pounds. Not sure why anyone cares when towing 10,000 pounds, but part of the testing was a 0-60 time. I forget the time but I was impressed that it chirped the tires on launch.

About powering your home. As long as you don't plan on using any more than 7,200 watts all you need is a generator receptical installed with a breaker interlock , so you're not allowed to close your main breaker and generator breaker simultaneously. Connect your 240 volt twistlock receptacle located in the truck be to the receptacle you Normally connect to your generator. Turn off your main breaker turn on your generator breaker , activate the rear recepticals and you're powering your home just as if you connected it to a 7200 watt generator. Only no gas fumes. You will have to turn such things off that draw too much power electric oven, electric clothes dryer etcetera. But during a power outage it's time to conserve anyway.

Do you have thoughts about when using a program like that is a good idea? My sense is that these programs give you an "off the rack" break on pricing (if available), but perhaps not as good a break as one you might negotiate yourself, but you have to have a bit of skill to negotiate.

HummerEV can remove the roof panels and Silverado E can have a removable mid-gate because the chassis is so stiff. Did you listen to Tom's review of the Lightning, he says it has flex and body shimmies over bumps, none of that in the Hummer Chassis, which will carryover to the SilveradoE. So in Summary the "car like unibody" on the Silverado E is much more rigid, and still has all the other benefits mentioned before. As for Rust, Did you watch Tom's review and see the half shafts on the Lightning are already rusty on a brand new truck? and that steel frame, and the rear suspension with very low ground clearance, awful. To top it off you know Ford is engineering a new Lightning which will be built at Blue Oval city starting in 2025, and guess what? UNIBODY.

Don't need hopes and dreams, I have a Hummer EV which will crush the Lightning in nearly every category, and I can extrapolate when the same components transfer into a more aerodynamic body, with more reasonable sized tires, what it will mean. I am getting over 350 miles of range in mixed driving in the HummerEV, and can easily assume the Silverado will have over 50% less aerodynamic drag, smaller frontal area, and less rolling resistance, AKA GM is going to blow out their 400 mile range estimate for the SilveradoE, I am think it will be 450, and with increased efficiency, GM's massively superior charging curve really opens a gap. I have been averaging over 260 kW 10-65%, Ford averages about 100 kW in that range maybe a bit less.

Ford: Just make a version with a compact, light range extender (3cyl turbo), then trim that heavy. expensive battery in half: You'd then have an ideal truck (no range worries) that could log 20,000 all-electric miles annually (plugged in every night).

For the vast majority of people buying trucks as a mere people mover, this is exactly what they need. And next gen gotta bump the battery pack to 800 volt architecture for faster chargers. Even for towing a boat to a near lake makes sense since you're likely to live close to it. But anything heavy-duty it has a 100 mile range and we're a decade or so away from battery tech to provide enough juice to drag a camper 250 miles. Also, ditch the shifter and do a column one like Mercedes-Benz, tesla already copied and it works.

Hmm, if only some countries that mine for rare metals and use child and slave labor would be considered, they do not all follow clean guidelines, also, CO2 is not a good barometer on “clean green”. But I’m hoping for newer better battery chemistry that will push the ev model forward (LiS). I like ev’s, they are just too heavy and expensive for me right now.

80A charging with a 100amp breaker when your whole house is 200a if newer, a lot of older houses have only 100a panels, 240V 20A (16A continuous) is what most people will use and take 20 hours. EV will take a lot longer to adapt at those rates.

This truck literally uses the same electricity that an average home uses each month. Average home here in Alberta uses 600 kWh a month and to recharge the Lightning's battery you use 152 kWh accounting for the average 16% loss from wall to battery (131 x 1.16). Do that 4 times a month (2,000 monthly km / 483 km of range = 4.1 charges) and it uses 608 kWh a month (152 x 4). And that isn't even accounting for range loss due to not perfect temperatures (wich is all the time in real life). Now imagine this EV trend being widely adopted with at least 2 EVs charging at each home. Electricity prices will go through the roof (aren't they already?) because in practice it will be the same as tripling the numbers of homes in a few years. This EV shenanigans will break everyone, not only EV adopters. We are in for a ride if this trend continues. The grid will not be able to support it and the electricity production cannot be increased at such speed (costly, environmental assessments, ya know the drill).

You charge them overnight. Demand is lower then, you're using capacity that is currently not in use. You're also presuming that each vehicle uses its whole battery every day and so needs a full charge every day, that's just not in tune with how vehicles get used. I'm sure there'd be supply problems if everyone suddenly started buying full tanks of gas every single day. Also who has two full size pickups in one household? It's certainly not everyone as you're assuming. My Chevy Bolt gets 300 miles on a battery half the size.

@@AlRoderick I am not presuming each vehicle uses its whole battery every day. That would be +-30 charges a month and I calculated the equivalent of 4 charges. Not sure where that conclusion came from. And if we add the equivalent of two times the current houses to the grid wouldn’t “overnight” not quickly become the new peak consumption period? Even with only 1 EV on average at each home we would be adding a whole new home worth of charging in addition to what currently is already being consumed, making overnight the peak anyways. Sure, the Bolt is more efficient than the Lightning in the same way a Civic is more efficient than the regular F150. Yet, a Bolt represents over half a home’s consumption anyways. Calculated as 2,000 km on average each month / 383 km range = equivalent to 5.22 charges (a month), 5.22 charges x 69.6 kWh (60 kWh plus 16% loss on charging) = 363.3 kWh used every month, which is over 60% of an average Alberta home’s consumption of 600 kWh. Yeah, not everyone will have two full size truck in their driveway, but a truck + a SUV is likely close to reality. But let’s assume people decide to have a truck and a Bolt equivalent. That would still be adding 1.6 times the current power consumption. Even charging it at night it would turn overnight into the new peak. Now, if only there was a way to combine the savings of electricity with an ICE in a way that the resulting low fuel consumption would generate power to run a car without screwing everyone on their electrical bills…

@@MrNicholg ICE ban is aimed for 2035 (some countries earlier), which in terms of the grid is pretty much all at once. Solar is also not viable for a big chunk of houses due to location and roof orientation. Plus, does the average person have the $? And how expensive will that get to install if every single home has to install it?

@@deniscdyck Do we have the money for $6/gallon gas? That's what it is here. But electricity is expensive here too. It's 45-cents per kwh right now and SDGE just asked for another 8% increase. It's still way cheaper than gasoline to the tune of thousands per year.
