Great no nonsense summary of your actual first-person long-term experience with the vehicle! Not many people are able to purchase a vehicle and sell it off after a few months, so being able to hear from someone that's done it provides a value not possible from the typical review. I was incredibly impressed after spending a few hours in a Lightning with Lariat trim, but I can't justify the price for the limited need that I have for a pickup truck. Your comments are very similar to mine when I talk to people about the experience, so it's good to know my impressions were not far off the mark! Thank you for reiterating the point that vehicle purchases must match the needs of the individual buyer, whether it's an EV or not!

I've said it before, but nobody is going to tow cross country with EVs for a good number of years. But if you tow like 90% of the people who tow daily (generators, wood chippers, crap that NEVER gets disconnected from the hitch) an EV will save you A FORTUNE in short order. 10mpg on $5.50 diesel, or $2 worth of electricity at night. You do the math.

Thanks for the review. I placed my reservation early I thought and missed the 1st wave. I was hoping for the Pro at 39k. I just received notice from FoMoCo that this winter, I'll be eligible to purchase a Lightning. The least expensive one is $55k plus. I'll just have to pass on it. Maybe later, EV prices will come back down to Earth.

I'd love to see the manufacturers give more real mileage ranges. For instance: All city driving expect 3 - 3.3 mpk 55 mph highways 2 - 2.4 mpk 70 mph roads 1.8 - 2 mpk Etcetera. That way, if you know your battery kwh you could easily calculate your expected range. Even with all that, there are weather conditions and your driving habits. Do you use one pedal driving to factor in. It is very difficult to come up with an accurate guesstimate on what you can expect.

Imagine if the truck with this size battery also had a range extender a very small generator not just similar from what they put into the power boost. That could add another hundred miles of range. That way, 99% of the time you’re running on electric only but when you need extra towing ability or you need to go a greater distance between charges or it’s winter warrior driving on the highway whatever the case is. You’ve got the ability to drive just as far as any other Vehicle that would make this the perfect vehicle, and I would be willing to pay an extra five grand for such a feature.

Great review, Alex. I can't believe they didn't put a heat pump in this truck. That is really dumb!! So, with that in mind, I guess you wouldn't recommend this truck for the northern states or Canada, considering the range loss in Winter? Imagine the range when it is double digits below freezing.

I live in the Salt Belt as well. Silver hides winter spray well but I think Bronze in the best for year round dirt concealment. 😉

I have a fire engine red pickup and wash it a few times every month but I don’t think of it as an authentic pickup until there’s some mud on the bottom of the wheel wells and rocker panels.

It’s well known that BEV range really suffers, probably 20-30% less, when you use the HVAC, That doesn’t include the battery need for motive power or accessories too.

I've definitely seen a range drop in colder weather, and it hasn't dropped to single digits yet. Although that's not a problem for me because my daily drive never exceeds 60 miles. However, charging to just the 80% recommended SOC, my 131 kwh battery drops to around 104 kwh and only getting 1.6 miles per kwh is about 167 miles of range. So if I was planning to drive farther than tgat in a day, there would be a problem, because the last thing I want to do is pay the public chargers ridiculously high kwh costs.

I do not think the Outlander PHEV will be a good choice, because Mitsubishis in general are not popular vehicles. You will be doing various tests for very little audience.

Alex, what are your thoughts on the cold weather and these EV’s, especially the Lightning. Real world reports of the range being drastically reduced by the cold. If you then tried to tow in the cold, from what I have seen you would be getting 100 miles of range at best.

I quite like Alex on Autos and think he gives a pretty fair shake to BEVs and other types of vehicles but I just heard him say something that I think really underscores the problem with the future of EV adoption in America (And Solar and Wind and any number of things we have to have a reckoning with...)..... When he was considering to buy/lease another Durango vs other options, he seemed to have his argument clearly entered on towing. (That might be the only reason IMHO to prefer a Durango as it's pretty much prehistoric and offers a massive V8 as it's only raison d'être while towing with 3 rows because otherwise it's circa 1980s like a lot of Mopar's offerings:-) In reviewing his reasons for NOT keeping the BEV F150 he again talked about towing and I again, assumed he was towing large loads long distances often for his other business that I guessed must be some sort of Interstate cinderblock delivery company:-) Then he said "I have to tow 300+ miles 1-2 a YEAR!" And there you have it. As long as we continue to make vehicle decisions on something we may or may not do 1 or twice PER 365 days and for which there are many alternatives (rent, hire, pay somebody) we are all going to be driving around in V8 Durangos and XL Suburbans because, you know, we MIGHT need to tow a boat that we are thinking of buying plus a few horses it would be lovely to someday own to Grandma's in insert-name-of-distance state-here WITH 6 other Full sized Boy Scouts in the back:-). Like the channel. Keep up the good reviews. People, get a grip on your wants vs needs and we'll all get to a better place sooner....

It's not that we the people need to get a grip on our wants vs needs it's the manufacturer need to make vehicles that meet our wants AND needs even if only for occasional use. Just like our gas vehicles already can. I bet if someone were to take a look at your life and find areas where you are going beyond the bare minimum needs. This is the elitist mindset of us regular people just have to make due with the bare minimum while our "betters" get everything they want.

Manufacturers WILL make what we demand. What we need to do is evolve our demands away from our very occasional wants and focus on our needs. As a species, we are very fond of indulging ourselves. Those who are far from elitist can overindulge themselves in foods and lifestyle choices that are not in thier long term best interests the same way that middle class America can indulge in transportation and energy choices that are not in our long term best interests. Exactly. I got rid of my truck a few years ago because I only used it a few times a year to pick up equipment or big loads of lumber/gravel Between registration, insurance, and all the maintenance problems that come from not driving a vehicle often... It's just easier to rent a truck or trailer when I need one. The extra dollars in my pocket are just icing on the cake

@@gordgooding1558 This is all fine and good, except that I bought my truck specifically for the 5 or 6 times a year that I tow my 5th wheel. This way I don't need to get used to a new truck every time I tow, (assuming I can find a rental company that allows 5th-wheel towing). I can also equip my truck with storage accessories for better organization of my tools and camping supplies; try doing that to a rental truck. Additionally, it gives me the added benefit of having a truck on hand for home projects. FWIW, the truck is not my daily driver.

I barely have time to charge my phone. I don't need another piece of battery I'll need to remember to plug in when it's -20 outside now, too. I have remote starts for my ICE and they work well when I'm too lazy and it's too cold to go outside, thank you very much!

Thank you and all the others who have given reviews on this awesome but not so awsome on true range truck. I missed the first and second wave orders due to the unavailability of the pro and since then the price has gone up to $59k+ at the check-out summary. Rediculous inflation. So that is an easy decision for me to take my deposit back. EV truck is not ready for prime time in Comparison to the ICE range. I will give it 7-10 yrs to be on par or better than ice.

6:33 This "THING" should be made standard to every EV if possible. Vehicle to Load/Grid or V2G. It's no giant change in hardware and diodes on electrical boards. It's such a waste it's not bring done seriously, with a steep price entry.

Yeah it’s a relatively simple feature and drastically needed on more cars… right now it’s basically just the Lightning, Volt, and Outlander that have that tech in the US. BUT it’s not as easy as just adding diodes… You need a powerful 120/240V inverter in the vehicle for V2L, and V2H / V2G requires your home to be wired for it too. It’s not just the BEV that needs an upgrade. You need to add a transfer switch and update the EV charge system for bidirectional power. Again, this can all be done. But it’s not free - it’s several thousand dollars. Not everyone will pay for that, so it should not be standard but the option should be taken more seriously.

Rivian does have a frame. And it is unibody. The Silverado ev should be simular to the rivian but larger. On the Rivian. The frame rails are further apart then the Lightning. Giving it more room for batteries. The redesigned Lightning will have more room for the batteries

A plug-in hybrid with 50 or so miles of range would be so much better practically for an ev truck. It's such a shame that it's battery pack is 2x the size of a base Tesla 3 yet gets similar range in real world driving. The goal for companies should be more ev's on the road and not the typical American bigger is a better solution mentality.

It sounds like a good review I would put a asterisk beside heat pump only EVs for people who live in real cold climates, they are great down around -22f (-30c) at which point they aren't as effective and need supplimental heat as some Tesla owners discover in Canada. Note this isn't a EV problem but a physics issue, heat pump based home heating systems have the same limitation. For northern use, EV vehicles will need to have some resistive heat to keep them functional in the extreme cold much the same as Diesel vehicles need supplimental heat to function properly in the -30 to -50 range.

Your assumptions are totally wrong as it was not built to replace anything. It is an option for those who can use it. That is why the gas and hybrid F150's are still being built and Ford announced no plans for the F250's and above as the battery power levels will not be there for a decade or more.

Would your thoughts and opinions of this particular truck also apply to the standard range? My truck will be a standard range. I drive almost exclusively local. My only worry is I could be buying an already outdated technology in the standard range.

I have an extended range platinum, which, because of its extra weight, hasn't ever achieved the rated 300-mile range stated. I believe a standard range battery with a lighter truck will do as well in comparison. Expect to see a significant range drop in colder weather. I've seen as low as 1.6 miles per kwh with mine at 19 degrees. I'm expecting even less when it reaches single digits. You will have 98 kwh battery, and if charged to the recommended 80% SOC, it will drop to about 78.4 kwh. If your winter driving dropped your range to 1.6 miles per kwh, like mine has, you'll still get about 125 miles on a charge. It's relatively easy to calculate all this. 98 x .8 = 78.4 78.4 x 1.6 = 125.44. Since you have the SR battery and you charge at home with the 240 v mobile charger, you can figure out about 6 kw per hour charge. Example: if you used half of the 78.4 kwh (39.2 kwh), it would take approximately 39.2÷6 = 6.5 hours to charge your truck back to 80% SOC. That should be a relatively accurate number because I've already figured in the loss from your 7200-watt charger. These numbers are close proximity estimates. These are still great vehicles as long as they are used locally and charged at home. Another tip you may see that range be cut in half again if you are towing, just something to keep in mind. I still love this truck and all its capabilities.

But I don’t tow and my commute to work is 7.5 miles on a 50 mph road. Most traffic flows around 60/65. But that’s really the longest drive I do everyday. Home Depot is 2 miles from home. The dump about 5 miles. The Jersey Shore about 5 miles. And, best of all. There’s currently a 110 outlet really close to where I park at work. I’m working on getting a nema 14-50 installed so I can fully charge on my employer’s dime.

IDK, I’m of the opinion that technology and infrastructure is still not there if your only vehicle is the EV. I tend to lean towards hybrids for efficiency and practicality and yes, I do have range anxiety.

As an owner of two Leaf’s since 2013 as my DD, you get used to the limited range. I’m of the opinion that EV full size trucks are a non starter because they really need a battery 3x the current size to be able to tow long distances. Ford should have electrified the Maverick or Ranger platform first.

Sorry. You're bowing low to the Green Goddess cancel culture. A base F150 XL crew cab 4wd FX4 with the 2.7T for less than half the price is a superior vehicle. As is the Maverick base hybrid. In CA 200 freeway mi on 90 kWh cost about $36 on current PGE Tier 2 homeowner rates. Fast charge rates are similar. At 70 mph, you nap for an hour for every three of driving. WoooWee! You'll arrive as the most rested driver in the caravan. A 2.7 ICE F150 4wd at 22 mpg at 70 mph will use 9 gallons in 200 mi for $40 -$45. For 8 bucks you get there an hour sooner for every 200 mi you travel. A 36 gallon tank will break your bladder. This while paying $500 per mo less in truck payments and $100 less in insurance. Around town the EV is lots cheaper to fuel and can charge at home. But around town a Prius or Maverick will serve even better. For most, now that the Fed has ended the CoViD handout flood, money matters. In the new post CoViD economy, these expensive vanity vehicles are for those few who earn much more than they need. For the rest of us, Money matters. Not sure the economics of EVs will be sustainable in anything but Bolt-priced vehicles. Look for hybrids to dominate

Good youre dumping it. Honestly the longer time goes on, the more we see what a poorly engineered, cobbled together POS this truck is. And that is before you consider the $20K price increase we saw in just one year. Long recharge times, losing half your range when towing or it's "cold" (35 degrees) out, Ford saying to use seat heaters and the heated steering wheel rather than the heater when it's cold and then removing the heated steering wheel for 2023. It's clear that Ford never took this fake lightning seriously and the result is a staggeringly bad vehicle.
