I'm definitely in the camp of while I'm there. I can't stand to see something I'm working on be anything but as good as I can get it. I can afford to do it that way but not everyone can. I used to have to reuse sometimes questionable parts when I didn't have much money so I completely understand.

That is the point of this video. The owner is not able to spend as much as he'd like, so we are doing the same thing you would do as a dad of six with a factory job in the '70s. We are making due.

Good timing for me as I'm heading head into the same small block Ford build myself. Thanks 👍

Great series for someone who just wants an engine to run and be reliable, as opposed to someone who's trying to figure out how much power you can contain in a stock 302 block without splitting it in two.

LOL That is what we thought. There are tons of peple who just want to be able to get it "back on the street".

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the small block info. I'm an FE guy my first engine build was a big block 390. Yes I know I'm sick. One these days I'll build a small block. But one small thing for the love of god please replace the main bolts. Arp main studs are like 70 bucks cheap insurance.

Normally we would. This engine is a driver that will be replaced in the next year or two and won't see a lot of high RPM. It is, for now, a stop gap while the owner saves for a new engine.

Good Mornin William! Looking for a 351W short block to stroke "408" into my 67 Gt. N/A, nothing crazy, maybe a F block roller, ? In the Detroit Area. Have a 460 mild built if interested in a swap. Thanks Bob

good job bros. Keep em coming. The only way I'd keep an old worn out engine or rebuild one is if it was numbers matching. Other than that...Bigger would be BETTER in my opinion. Upgrade! Great video again.

Well that timing chain escalated quickly!!! :-) been building small block Fords since I was a teenager... I guess that;s 30 years ago now. love the content, look forward to seeing it go back together. those pistons look like standard lower compression dished units to keep things down under 9:1. how far down from the deck are they? what cylinder head casting was on this engine? thanks, Jeff
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod Жыл бұрын
The heads are the trashy 1975 302 heads. In fact the whole engine is a reman 1975. So compression is about 8.5:1.

The boots off of old spark plug wires works great on the rod bolts to protect the crank and is free.

Replace just the thrust? You replace all bearings, cam, rods, mains, rings, cam and lifters, timing chain and gears. You can polish valve stems by putting them in a drill press and holding fine crocus cloth around them. We did it for fifty years in the shop. Polished every valve we reused.
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! We will not be replacing the thrust bearing. Keep in mind that this is a temp engine. The owner plans to replace it with a hotter 302 down the road.

We're going to "run what we brung." This engine is not going to be sticking around. The owner will replace it in a year or two with a crate engine.

If the oil changes were kept up with good quality oils, you are probably OK. oil pressure loss is a sign of mains going south from wear.
