My heart goes out to you, I wanted to reach through the screen and do it for you, as a professional mechanic/machinest it was painful to watch you struggle, then you broke your calipers, hope they weren't "Helios". It turned out to be a pretty expensive little job, but at least you succeeded and it cranks once again. Thanks for the upload, it took courage. :-)

Looked like a performance tool caliper. Honestly, with calipers and other measurement tools, I learned my lesson. We utilize them in a hostile environment, so I buy the cheapest to replace possible, because you will break one.

Lynx Star Automotive I just looked again, they were Helios, about 125.00 today, poor guy.

@@arttrombley7385 you can see the logo pretty clearly as well as the plastic case in the background. It's performance tools, probably cost about $20

It’s good for people to see that mistakes are okay and that we can always learn from our mistakes. Still cheaper than a new or reman starter. ✌️👍🏿

Now I get a refresher on what they look like inside. Doesn't answer my problem but gives me ideas. I've gone through at this moment, 6 starters all with same issue and then put one on from the 70s and quiet as a mouse like it should be but kicks out sometimes so needs rebuilt. Going to take the so called new starter that died and the old one that's quiet like it should be and see if they can't fix the old and make the new one match it. Whatever the difference is. All the new starters I've put in since the one I put in the car in the 70s have gone too far in and the thing rubs on my ring gear and sounds like a chrysler starting. Even with 2 spacers! Changed flex plates cause everyone said i need the newer ex amount of teeth, not the one for the old style starter. Which is same from 70s also with modern style starter. Didn't help either. But now that I have one that is as it should be I'm not letting it go anywhere!! Hoping they can make the last dead one like the old one i found that works so I have a back up so won't have to go through this again in my lifetime! Also, you don't replace the bushing? in the nose cone when you rebuild them? Thanks for the video also, and I have pulled it out too far and you're right, those brushes are a booger.

Thanks for the compliment. I didn't replace them. I was going to but I wasn't going to be able to get them for several days and I already had one vehicle down so I went ahead and put it back together.

should have replaced bushings and brushes while you were there.

Agree. Or at least checked them. By the time the starter bendix goes bad there is usually a lot of carbon dust caked on the brush holder and the commutator. And the title should be, "How to replace a starter bendix".

the thrust washer is on the wrong side of the clip

He put it back on the way it came off with the washer towards the nose. The other washer thing kind of cups the keeper to help prevent it from coming off the shaft.
