Yes the most aerodynamic shape is a raindrop. It automatically forms to the least resistance. Rounded on the bottom (front) with a long tail on top (rear). If there was a more aerodynamic shape it would be that.

It has been many years since I weighed a 302 on a scale. But I recall the 1975 block I had weighed about what you mentioned in the video, but a 1982 302 block(1 piece seal, and 50 oz crank) that I had was lighter then the 1975 302 block by quite a bit, if I recall correctly.

Nice as always, I'm putting my short block together, I had it align bored for the new crank. Now the bottom half of the bearings are too long. Can I file or sand the bearings to fit flush. Thanks
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 2 ай бұрын
It should not have happened because material is taken off the top and bottom of the block. The only concern now is the timing chain slack if it is too much taken off.

I've been watching a lot of your youtube's lately, planning on a 347 build for my Tiger. Should I stay with an early 5 bolt block or find an H.O. Do you have any videos on balancing? What do you do when buying pistons and rods, weigh them individually or do you spin balance the whole assy?
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 4 ай бұрын
I would opt for an HO block 6 bolt pattern and just take it to a reputable shop and let them check the dampener/flywheel and the rest of the rotating assembly.
@richdouche8253
@richdouche8253 8 ай бұрын
Question (never having tried): Can you grind the crank counterweights to make them rounded on the leading edges and tapered on the trailing edges and still balance the assembly easily? Or does it affect it too much where you'll be using mallory weight all over the thing? Thank you again for your videos!

Do you bias the trailing edge to help push oil towards the block instead of rod journals? As a means of help controlling windage?
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 6 ай бұрын
I feel from an aero perspective, best a round LE pushes the oil mists away and towards the oil pan rails. I feel this does a good job specially for a wet sump system.

Are cast cranks easier on bearings than a forged or billet crank as some say? If true its better to run a cast crank unless you really need the forged added strength even if the forged/billet crank was free.
@benalamedaracing2765

I will try to use a forged crank over a cast iron for safety and reliability.

Ben, my wife has me on silent time, lol. But is main and rod diameter very important? I have 2.74 mains and 2.2 rod journals. It revs very quickly. I use a Ford iron cam and use 2.2 BBC rods that are from grinding down. I would like to get a Scat crank, but I have never broken the stock FE crank. The fillet is wide . And they are light.

I was always told that a 351 would chew the mains up with high rpm. And how much horsepower is the stock block 351 good to?
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 8 ай бұрын
What needs to be done is to open up the mains to .0028-.003 and that would fix the oiling issues with the big main diameters of the 351W. The stock 351 block I have easily made 750-800hp NA relying more on big displacement than rpms to make power. Minimum 408 to as big as a 440 from the factory and favoring the 4.100-4.170 stroke length. If you plan on running a turbo you can go further than this with a 4.00 or less stroke. I have made close to 950 flywheel hp on boost but you have to avoid detonation/pre ignition or it will be a short experience.

I got a 302 in a 84 mustang with a 302 stock block 30 over i got 351w 69 heads is there a good crank shaft i should use to make over 400 + hp and 400 + tq just rebuilding it i got a luk steel wheel wheel and 50oz damper should i do a 28 oz instead
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 2 ай бұрын
Making 400 at the flywheel should be no sweat even with the stock 5.0 crank! Did it many times and you should be good but you should step up to an aftermarket like the TFS TW or the AFR cylinder heads. Then it is easily achievable!
