A long wheel base truck with a true full 8ft bed would have been awesome. That extra bed room makes such a huge difference and there is never a risk of the front cab off the trailer hitting the back of the cab.

After a two month snowbird stay in Arizona we decided to upgrade from our 24’ bumper pull to an Alliance 310RL. We learned our 2016 Duramax was short on payload and rear axle weight capacity. So we upgraded to a 2022 Chevrolet High Country 3500 dually. It took some time to adjust to driving the dually for groceries and errands but it sure tows great! I really enjoy your channel and following your adventures!

We had an F350 with a truck camper and found out that we were overloaded, also by about 800 lbs. We did the same thing--we did the research and realized that a Ram 3500 dually (diesel) would work for our camper. We've since moved up to a 30 ft fifth-wheel, and the truck is still well under its max ability to pull that puppy down the road. We have it packed for a long trip and went to weigh it, and found out we had about 3,000 more lbs we could fit in it. Granted, we aren't living in it full time, but we do take long trips and pack it pretty well. So a good truck is a big anxiety reducer, for sure!! We also love this truck--it is comfortable and big and goes anywhere we need, except for the narrow roads in the hills. Ours is long and won't work on some roads in the national forests and so on, but generally we can go where we'd like to. Thanks for the great videos, keep it up and enjoy your new addition to the family!

Congratulations on the new truck!!!! I've heard the saying, "better to have more truck then you need then need more truck then you have!" I'm always planning for the future, we started with a 1/2 ton and a travel trailer, upgraded to a 3/4 ton for a couple years, then a 1 ton dually. Then we upgraded from the travel trailer to a 5th wheel. Now still planning for the future, for when we're ready to leave the sticks and bricks and full time in an rv, upgrading to a newer 5th wheel from Spacecraft (fully custom built manufacturing) and an HDT to tow it!!

I just watched this video and so glad to see you’ve upgraded to a Ram truck. I have this same truck, it’s a 2010 though, but it’s the short bed Mega Cab dually. The best part of your upgrade is you now have the best diesel engine available for the 3500 series of Fords, Chevys and Ram. You have an engine that was born a diesel, the Cummins is by far the best bang for your buck power plant. I have 170K miles on my truck now and at 79K miles, I had to replace the water pump. That’s all I’ve had fail. The Cummins 6.7L engine will easily go 500K with regular scheduled maintenance. I pull a 41 foot Heartland Cyclone 3950 (GVWR 18,000lbs). I have no after market parts (Banks equipment). It is all factory stock and no problems pulling grades with my trailer weighing in at 17.4K lbs currently. Welcome to the world of Ram trucks and yes I agree with y’all, she’s a beauty. Happy trails and see y’all in the next video. ♥️ P.S. I put a 52 gallon replacement fuel tank where the original 32 gallon tank was mounted under the truck. I have a driving range of 300 miles towing the trailer, and 500 miles when not towing. I currently get 14 - 17 mpg not towing. Towing I get anywhere from 5 - 10 mpg. You will see your mpg’s increase when you hit around 40,000 miles. This engine will just be starting to break in. Your mileage will be better than mine cause each year these trucks just get better and better. ♥️

@@IreneIronTravels I bought a 52 gallon replacement tank made by Titan Fuel Tanks. The tank is good but has a venting problem when fueling. I can’t open the fuel nozzle all the way, the back pressure will shut the flow off. I narrowed my search for the tank between Titan and Transfer-Flow. Titan came in at $200 cheaper for the 52 gallon tank, I went with Titan, but in hindsight, wish now I’d gone with Transfer-Flow. The Titan tank installed by Super Shops in San Bernardino, CA 6 years ago was $1600 total out the door. Titan pretty much blew me off when I contacted them about the venting problem which Super Shops backed me up.

Congrats!... My retired job; I move new RV's around the USA, delivering to dealerships (Camping World, etc). I upgraded my old truck to a GMC Denali 3500 Dually with airbags + auxiliary fuel tank. I would recommend a 60 gallon auxiliary tank for your Dodge. Buying fuel and saving money when you find the cheap fuel will give you piece of mind during travel out in the middle of nowhere. I normally save between $30-$70 on my aux tank refills with my 118 gallon aux tank that fits in my box, below the tonneau cover. I also have and electric fuel pump for the aux tank to fill up my main tank during travel to transfer the fuel..... just my .02 James from Duluth MN.

I have a 60 gal aux tank for the same reasons you suggest. It allows me just over 900 miles before I have to refill. I plumbed my aux tank directly to my main tank using the manufacturers suggested install kit. I know my auxiliary tank is empty when my fuel gauge on the dash starts working. When I arrive at my destination I shut the aux tank off and start looking for a refill sight. It’s easier to refill the main tank on my truck so at my destination I always use the onboard tank. Gas cards will save you money. On a 1500 mile trip I usually save enough to take my wife to dinner at least once.

@@Lloyd973 plumbing directly to the main tank without a shut off valve is dangerous. Because the main tank filler is vented and the aux tank in the back is at a higher elevation than the main tank.... Yes the main tank does have a ball valve built in at the opening when the filler tube reaches the tank... On GMC and Chevy.... If you leave the valve on too long you can get a check engine light on the dash... Furthermore, when you plumb the aux tank to the filler line, usually you get a roll-over stop valve with the install to be D.O.T. compliant in all 50 States....

When you get to trailers that size, and the next one you get which will be bigger, you need two things. A full 8’ bed because shooters are dangerous with 5th wheels and an F450 series truck. 14,000# GVWR. The biggest benefit other than payload is the massive brakes. Nearly 15” discs, big calipers. My rig was 30,000# and I sold the truck with 134,000 miles on it and the original brakes.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the hill. Weight and capacity matching is a complex and serious adventure. It is a leap frog situation and sometimes I have leaped off a cliff. You have a really cool setup for yourselves now, but if you want to take some urban adventures and do a home base in or near a large city, you should be able to maneuver into tight spaces with the 5th wheel. However, having a dually in a city is a royal pain. I promise you will dent your fenders or someone will dent them for you. No biggy, just something to prepare for. I have been totally happy with my diesel RAM 3500, Limited Mega Cab for pulling our 28 ft Outdoors trailer. I like having a topper over the bed with a 100 gallon aux fuel tank. Started camping in the 1970 and have had too many trucks, campers, trailers, and motor homes to count. I am really happy with the RAM 3500 single axile and trailer. When we needed more space we bought a house a couple of years ago and kept the truck and trailer. Now we are ready for the road again and will sell the house for more than we bought it for. Having an appreciating asset made more sense to us than buying a bigger travel rig for the benefit of mixing things up a bit. Sooner or later we will buy another home but are down by one child who has graduated to adulthood and independence. If I were to get an upgrade trailer, it would be smaller than 28 feet. It won’t be too long until we have no children with us. I enjoyed your video. Best wishes to you both and your dogs-stay safe.

It’s just simple math and responsible RVers, like you guys, do the responsible, safe thing. I agree re: the dually. I never wanted one. But now that I have one (the long bed version) I can’t imagine going back to an SRW. The smoothness, comfort, and stability have made me a believer. I enjoy driving it with or without the trailer. Congratulations on upgrading to the Dually Community. While it may not fit everyone's budget once you learn to drive an 8-foot-wide vehicle it's not that much different from the standard model. One thing to always remember is that you can't take it to locations like Redwood Forest and expect to be able to drive through all the smaller openings like you would be able to do with the single-wheel version. Also, you will most likely go through more DEF in that vehicle so it's good to have a 2.5-gal spare on hand while you're traveling. I have the Ford F-450 Limited Edition and love it. I looked at the RAM 3500 but during the summer of 2019 they were very scarce in the central Ohio area and all I could find were a couple used vehicles that didn't meet our "must-have" requirements. Stay safe and happy trails.

Aaron & Chris, thanks for sharing all of your experiences. We are trying to get started, and the length, payload, GCVWR etc. are just about crippling me from making any decision. Towing guideline docs from manufactures almost make it worse. Have you seen any spreadsheets that have helped simplify the process of know whether or not the truck/fifth wheel you are considering are a good match? Congrats on the new rig, and please keep making the amazing content for us all. You two are our go-to for learning about gear and what NOT to do :). Be well!!
@IreneIronTravels9 ай бұрын
Thanks appreciate ya watching! I think KYD had one from years ago. It can be simplified though. Take your ideal 5th wheel’s GVWR. ( the max it can weight) let’s just say 20,000lbs for example. Than you multiply it by .2 or even .25 to be on the conservative side. (20,000 x .2 = 4000) that’s the pin weight of the 5th wheel onto the truck. So then you look at your truck. Let’s say the GVWR of the truck is 12,400. You need to also look at your payload sticker. Let’s say that’s 4900. ( so now you have 4000 from 5th wheel and then you add in you and your family and all your gear. ) You have 900lbs left over for that. But you also have to watch the rear axle weight rating on a single rear wheel truck along with the tire max ratings. This is just a rough way to estimate before you buy either. You might not go to your max 20,000 lb on your 5th wheel and you might be good with less truck. But you don’t know till you look at the numbers. For large 5th wheels around 15,000 to 17,000 you need a very particular single rear wheel one ton that has 12,400ish GVWR and 4500ish plus pounds of payload….. What size 5th wheel are you looking at? GVWR? You can see you could tow

We sadly upgraded from our F350 King Ranch to a Silverado 3500HD because the Ford had to many miles on it. Unforeseen benefit we almost doubled the mileage. Roundtrip across country averaged 14.3 MPG. We were lucky to get 8.5 with the Ford. Without the trailer on the freeway it’s 19.6.

I bought my 2019 270RKS Outdoors RV (ORV) in 2018 when I retired. I spent 3 prior years researching TT’s for my needs in 4 season camping knowing I was fleeing Hellifornia to Montana in 2019. My ORV max weight is 11.7k that my beloved 2001 Dodge 2500 easily tows. At first I thought wow, the first of MANY YTers I’ve watched actually has an AMAZING ORV, but a smaller one. Then, their truck is too much for the smaller TT and thought, guess what, they’re going bigger and need a dually after buying a ridiculously expensive Tremor…. Shocking.

Well my RAM 3500 SRW LB 6.7HO has almost 4200 lb payload so i suspect yours should be good for another 1500 lbs more. And the 4.10 axles 👍 Overkill is okay in my book! We love our Ram towing our 30 foot Rockwood 5th wheel. Enjoy! Bill in Utah
@IreneIronTravels10 ай бұрын
Thanks Bill! And nice payload on your RAM! I was going to order a F350 SRW that would have about that. (4200-4500). But we would still be pushing it and rear axle as well.

You learn as you go. Thats how it works. I spent my entire life living and working outdoors in rural areas. I went through the big mudder truck phase and learned it doesn’t carry loads or haul stock trailers. I also learned after buying a 3500, that I didn’t need a truck like the Tremor. Don’t measure your truck by how deep the water is. If the water is three feet deep, get a jeep or swamp buggy. We have a swamp buggy, airboat and SXS to get into areas that are wet. No reason to destroy your electric actuators, sensors, etc in water and mud. You aren’t going to dump your new Ram in mud and flooded areas. I have a 2023 3500 DRW. Only needed four wheel drive twice so far. Both in muddy pastures You made a great purchase. But know it’s easy to exceed the speed limits in that truck. It sneaks up on you

Well, well, guess I must be doing something right. I drive a 2008 f350 super duty diesel, pull 26 foot Outdoors Timber Ridge trailer. 350 has a canopy with bed, toilet (5 gal bucket),tools, food, stove, p and ps, solar briefcase, and recovery gear on roof rack. Exactly as you, to go further off road and beyond. Imagine that! 80 y/o on 9.4.24 and having the time of my life. Black 350, silver canopy, see you on the trail.

We just got our 2024 RAM 3500 dually in February to use with our Alliance Paradigm 385FL. It has so much power and gets almost 20 mpg not towing and 11-13 towing. A little tight parking at the grocery store or laundry.

Sooooooo Yeah I got a surprise when I went to the CAT scales. I just to delivery of a 2024 Ford SRW HO Platinum Tremor. To pull our Brinkley Z3610 with a hitch weight of 2591 and a Payload of 3868 I thought I was good but load I am 280 pounds before max. The biggest pain point that the GVWR is 60 pounds over. 😢 We are going to adjust to lower the hitch weight. It sure sneaks up on you quick.

Thank you for bringing us along on your decision-making journey. No one knows where they will be in 5-10 years. Needs and wants change. It looks like you folks will have this combination for a while since your 5th wheel is all you could ever need, . . . for now. Best wishes on your new truck! She's a beaut!!

Yes! How do you like the Ford after a RAM? Yes, we went with a slider because we want that 100% that we wont hit our truck. And we don't really use the bed for anything. But more and more people are trying the gooseneck setups.

Wow!! That is a nice truck, even though we have a 2022 Ford F-450 dually. I am sure that the steadiness of the Dually when pulling is so much better. It just sucks you all just got that ceramic put on the Tremor and had to sell it. We faced the same situation when we bought our first Riverstone and had a GMC Denali 3500. We had to get the F-450 quick fast and in a hurry. We are currently located in Florida as well volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and will be heading to Thousand Trails Orlando for two weeks. You all should come up and hang out with us and the Adventure Bandits. Anyways, congratulations on the new truck.
@IreneIronTravels10 ай бұрын
Thanks! I actually ordered a F450....long story, but big communication problems from the dealer.... We found this Ram short bed for a good deal and trade in. Yes, bummer on the ceramic coating for sure... but I left enough in the budget to get this one done. Need it for the black! 🤣. We're pretty far from Orlando now, but say hi to the AB's for us. We meet at the first RV unplugged rally.👍
@Ren_O_7210 ай бұрын
@@IreneIronTravels yeah, that sucks about the F-450. We are loving it. We want to do that ceramic coating like you all did later in the year on our Truck and Riverstone. Seems like a great product. We did get our Independent Suspension and used Irene Irons Travel code for the additional money to use which we got the Safe-T handle. The only other lesson learned for future is steer away from getting the sun roof. It lowers the payload capacity. We barely use ours, however I know you guys use yours when filming for better lighting. I know you all post after you leave a location as you probably edit while Chris is driving. Yeah Talmage and Ashanti told us they met you all at the Rally season 1. We are attending season 2 rally to hang out with them and meet new people too. Should be fun. Have fun and be safe wherever the winds and roads take you all! 👍🏾

Great choice on your new truck! I have always driven GM trucks until 2019. I was getting ready to retire and was going to buy a new GMC Denali. While doing my research, I saw a lot about the new 2019 1500. I drove home a Laramie home. In 2021, we ordered a new Rockwood 2608BS. But not enough hitch weight with the half ton. At the time, trucks were hard to find. But I found a 2019 2500 Limited diesel with a long box. Which works best because the 2608BS doesn't have a lot of outside storage. In my opinion, RAM has the best interior hands down. The 6.7 diesel engine is bulletproof. I am looking forward to seeing your next video. Safe travels.

Congrats! Have a '22 3500 MEGA Cab as well and you'll love it. If you travel any through the Rockies, you'll be glad you have that RAM pulling a 33' 5th wheel. You will have no need for those uphill track lanes. F.Y.I. = look into Titan fuel tanks as an upgrade option. Enjoy your travels.

Thanks! Will do! Do you have the Titan? I trying to wrap my head around the $1400 plus installation of $500 on these......
@wtthatsme95110 ай бұрын
@@IreneIronTravels Yes, I had a Titan installed. Made a huge difference after installation. Traveling out west in certain areas you always have to plan your fuel stops with a standard OEM tank while pulling a loaded trailer. Now it has become less of a worry with the additional fuel capacity. Add a fuel booster which might add an additional 1 to 3 mpg(s) and your range per tank is a bonus.

@@IreneIronTravels when we had the 2018 Mega Cab, we were going to get the Titan. But in 2021 we had an issue, under warranty, that Ram could not fix. So they bought it back under the Lemon Law. In 2021, inventory for trucks was very low. We couldn't find another Mega Cab, so we ended up buying a Crew Cab longbed. The longbed comes with a 50 gallon tank. We miss the MegaCab, but love the 50 gallon tank. It's money well spent to get the Titan tank. It's a game changer. Hey, maybe Titan will sponsor it. 😉 That would be a great video. Congrats on your new Dodge! Nice! This happens to people all the time and happened to us! We had a 2015 Dodge, 1500 Hemi ,pulling our KZ Connect 24' until 2023. We forgot that our special needs son would grow up (lol) and we'd need more adult space! So we traded in our 1500 for a 2500 Diesel, and our trailer for a slightly larger unit, Freedom Express 29' which gave us about 6 more feet of trailer (Our son now has his own back bedroom). Our truck is a total Beast! and it's tow is simply amazing! Even when were fully loaded, we don't feel like the trailer is behind us! You always want to have more tow capacity in your vehicle than the rating. One should also do their homework and not trust any dealers to tell you "it's safe". Most of the time they just want the sale. It's just so much safer and more comfortable to navigating with our new setup now! I'm sure you all feel the same! Happy Camping and enjoy!!!!
