I bought a 2012 F150 with 81,000 miles on it a couple of weeks ago. I've been watching your videos so I can learn about it, and I'm glad that the transmission seems to be a decent unit. This video and the fluid changed video you posted make it look like the transmission is fairly easy to service and repair, also.

Thank you for all of your videos...very excellent technical information. I had my 2011 F150 Ecoboost transmission serviced at the dealer a few months ago at about 32,000 miles, and on the bill, I noticed that there was a charge for only 4 quarts of fluid. I asked them why only 4 quarts, and they said that they cannot get the rest of it out! Right away I knew something was wrong, and now I know that they were apparently either not knowledgeable about the 6R80, or were just too lazy to do the whole procedure, and I know they did not clean the doughnut, or change the filter by your videos. Now I have to find a shop that will do it right. In the past I did all of this work myself...even had a drain plug installed in my last truck to make it easier to empty the transmission pan...and that worked GREAT! But it is getting less desirable at 70 years old to crawl underneath and do those things. Thanks again for your videos...top notch. (I really liked the one on the "Catch Can" as well.

FordTechMakuloco is ther any gaskets between the valve body and transmission? I notice some machined surfaces on the trans and valve body when I took mine off but there was no gaskets. At 9 minutes 43 seconds that is an example of the machined surface that mates to the trans.

Very nice and informative video! I took my 2009 F150 SCREW to a local shop for something else but asked for a tranny fluid change while there. Dude told me his mechanic said it was a 3 hour job and they didn't want to do it! I told him it wasn't, just drop the pan, clean, and put back on. I actually argued with the service rep for awhile then told them forget it. I think they didn't have a coolant flush machine or something. Very odd at me arguing for someone to take my money. Oh well, I have a filter and will do it myself this weekend. Thanks again!

I watched several of your 6R80 videos before doing a fluid/filter change. I just purchased the truck with 100,000 miles and didn't have any history on it so I opted to do the fluid, filter, bulkhead sleeve and pump adapter. I followed your procedures and thought I would pass along an additional tip. On my 2010 Navigator with the mechatronic valve body, I ended up with a "no start" condition. I also had the "Service AdvanceTrac" message and the "Wrench" and CE lights on. I assumed I didn't properly install the bulkhead sleeve and had a connector issue. What it ended up being is that the spool valve that connects to the transmission range selector got pushed into the valve body and didn't properly engage the range selector. The transmission range sensor detected this condition. I could also feel some resistance when putting the vehicle in and out of park. So if you drop the valve body be sure the spool valve engages the range selector properly.

hey keenan stahl i have also just bought a f 150 with 6R80, 100,000 no service records, theres a myth going around on the internet to not change transmission fluid on a vehicle with high miles because it may cause it to slip? That transmission thermostat is a PITA during trans services. We still have a BG trans flush machine instead of the Rotunda heated machine. Brake torque is the only way to get it hot enough to flow. After the flush is finished I always leave the vehicle idle until the thermostat closes so I know it's not overheating anything and gives the torque converter plenty of time to cool down. Great video as always man.

thank you for the tips. I just replaced my uncle's 6r60 valve body filter and fluid on his 07 explorer and they made it extremely easy. BUT... after i got done and filled it all up took it on a test drive and everything seemed fine at first but once i hit the highway the truck temp shot up within seconds. i stopped immediately an blasted heat to try and bring it down just to get of the highway since i was sitting at the top of the ramp. But the temp continued to climb in spastic increments. it would jump up about 1/16 to 1/8 inch then fall the same amount or more then after it climbed 3-4 times like this i shut it completely off and just turned key to acc to monitor temp with heat on still. same thing then about 4-5 mins later the temp just fell back to normal temp. i started the truck and headed off the highway all was well till about half block down off the ramp and the cycle started all over. pulling in to the gas station at a crawl temp started to fall rapidly. let it idle and monitored it. temp would go all over, it would climb then stop and stay there then sometimes climb more or start to fall. Coolant checked ( balance good, and full). felt trans lines one hot one cold. All seem right but gauge is acting funny. limp it home check it all is showing fine. Did some research for thing leading to thermal bypass could be bad. What is your thoughts on it if you don't mind me asking. P.S. i am a fleet tech for a small municipal township and have IDS. Have not had time to run it on the truck except for when i programed the pcm after installing new valve body. thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

WOW dude....... I wish you worked at my local dealer. I had my 2010 4.6v F150 with the 6r80 (I think) at 15K with slow engagement after sitting 4-6 days. They kept it for a week and said it was normal. I called BS on it but Ford wouldn't offer any help so I'm stuck with it. I've learned to wait 20-30 seconds to pressure up after sitting for a week before taking it out of park.

+FordTechMakuloco I thought I was getting burned on the story but the Ford rep backed them up so I thought it was a design flaw and not an actual failure. That ticks me off. Are there any special things to look for when replacing the valve body seal? It's been years since I pulled a transmission pan and valve bodies make me nervous. It's a 2010 with 29K miles.

FordTechMakuloco, I've got a 2010 Explorer LTD with the 6R80. I bought it from a used car dealer with a little over 180,000km (111,000-miles) on it and have no clue if the transmission has been serviced in the past. The trans seems to mostly shift fine, but there seems to be an issue with what feels like early converter lock up during light throttle 1-2 shifts. When under light-moderate, moderate or WOT throttle, the trans seems to act and shift normally. Under light acceleration however (the kind you'd used when trying to pussy foot around town, to save fuel) it has a tenancy to lock up the 1-2 gears almost right out of idle, creating load that seems to "bog" the engine. I can eliminate this altogether by accelerating more briskly off the line, or I can address the already occurring condition by adding a dab more throttle, but both results in lunge, or a downshift back to first, then a more pronounced lunge forward....effectively negating any of the "fuel mileage" saving I would have otherwise gotten when driving it easy. I'm unsure if this is a characteristic of the 6R80 models, where ford added a 1-way clutch to the read planetary assembly to smooth the 1-2 and 2-1 shifts (from what I understand, the 6R60's didn't do this), or if it's simply a calibration issue...or perhaps an issues created by running high mileage fluid? I plan on dropping the pan and doing fluid and filter in conjunction with my next oil change, but wanted to ensure this is a problem that could be cured with fresh fluid, or perhaps a PCM calibration...or are there any mechanical parts I should be looking at while I've got the pan off? Or is this simply how Ford has this transmission set up, to maximise mileage? Have you, or anyone reading this come across this issue at all?

2011 F150 3.7L V6. 100,000 miles. What is the part name and number for the pass through to the pump that you are pointing to at 3:32? I'm fairly confident this is what is causing my problem. Transmission is sluggish to shift from P to drive in the morning, first start. If in a hurry and quickly starting the truck and shifting to drive, it wont shift, add accelerator and no move until a few seconds and it finally catches. Sometimes catches rough after a stop sign too. Ill take my foot off the brake and hit the accelerator and loud "clunk" and bit of a jerk as it kicks into gear. Thank you for your videos! Amazing and VERY informative video. One question I've have is...on a 2016 F150's 6R80 (6speed, 4wd, etc) what purpose does it serve the tranny filters with an additional small niple? What's the extra small niple for? I've seen people using either filters, with and without the extra niple, on trannys that have the two holes in the valve body area. Your videos are AWESOME. Thanks so much for making them. Recently my 2012 Navigator, which has the 6r80 trans in it started misbehaving. At first it was just very minor shift issue .. slightly hard shifting .. shift points feeling like they were just a smidge off (especially 2>3). But recently when I started the vehicle, the speedometer didn't work and the on-dash display shows dashes for most items. The tach still worked. An ignition cycle cleared everything up for a short period of time, but it recurred several times. Eventually it threw a P0720 (output speed sensor circuit malfunction). So I am thinking I need to start with replacing the moulded lead frame. I've never gotten tangled up with a transmission, but am generally comfortable with working on my car. Is this something you slightly better than average DIY'er can do?

I only wish I has seen this sooner. I have 2011 F150 EcoBoost 3.5 and after the latest PCM reflash recall, a slight hard downshift from 4th to 3rd became hard shifts in every other gear. Took it back to the dealer and the problem got worse. They told me the transmission was probably too deteriorated by that time 🤬. I had asked them to change the fluid at 60k and they told me it didnt need it. I'm awaiting a remanufactured, updated trans from Street Smart as we speak.

I see that a recall for the 6R80 lead frame on the 2011 and 2012 is on it's way for the F150's, but my 2012 Fx4 does something a little different than jumping to 1st or 2nd gear. ( I can reproduce this also...) If I'm basically "coasting" on a mild decline, and don't touch the throttle, the 6R80 will go out of gear ( neutral ?) while all the gauges indicate something different. At that point the engine is free wheeling and not transferring any power to the transmission. I can sometimes get it to correct itself by pushing the tow/haul button, but that sometimes gives me a bad "clunk". I must stop, and move the gear lever or push the tow/haul button to fix it. Not sure it's the same issue, but it's done this since new, and I know how to avoid it.

Is there anyway the thermal bypass valve can be manually opened? Well, i guess not or somebody would have posted it. anyway, I highly doubt a dealership is going to spend the time getting my trans temp up to the required temp to open that valve. Plus I don't like the idea of my F150 being dogged while up on a lift just to get the temps up. 99% of the public would have no idea about the valve needing to be opened to completely change all the fluid. They pay for 15 quarts and really only get a portion of that changed. I found a reputable auto repair shop that will do it by just dropping the pan and changing the fluid that way. He seemed knowledgable about the thermal bypass valve too. Every Ford dealership I called said they don't drop pans, flushes only. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

After 2 years of research and all the mess with the 6r80, I finally found your video and is the most informative of anything I have found. I have a 10' F150 5.4 FX4. The tranny is horrible. Dealership under warranty was no help and I'm at wits end with the shifting issues now. Where do I start? Do I take it to a shop? The shorting you mentioned is the most realistic based on my issues but I've had 6 resets, yolk slip check even a new throttle body by dealership. It needs something else and bad.. There's a lot more going on than a reflash. I wish I was in Chicago I'd bring it to you but I'm in NE FL. What do I do first??

+Anthony Tomsic What is the most current concern you are still having?
@anthonytomsic8217
@anthonytomsic8217 9 жыл бұрын
+FordTechMakuloco First, thanks for the reply!! In a nut shell I will try to explain. In normal driving conditions the shifting is horrible. I go from 1 -2, there is no 3 really (unless i'm standing on pedal to the floor) and then it shifts immediate to 4, 5, 6 and the truck bogs..and this all by 35-40 mph. I have to play with the pedal to kick the gears down without it hitting passing gear in traffic which it does frequently and I get crazy looks of course. This is constant. In a scenario when I have to pass, change lanes or even goose it a bit in a median intersection (rolling) .. I lose power and its dangerous, the tranny wont pick up the correct gear and its starting in like 4-5 gear when it should kick down. It simply wont engage a lower gear. When the temp is high outside, like 86+ (im in FL) its worse, esp at +95. Now, if I drive it manual .. shifting 1-2-3-D its different, of course I get the shift points I give it when I change without issue but when I come out of 3-D, it goes 4-5-6 just that fast and it bogs and you can watch the rpm just go down in stages - No matter what speed I'm at. Now for that scenario only one other thing gets me 4th longer and that is if I am in manual with tow/haul selected. but as soon as it hits 4 it goes 5-6 just that fast and bogs and rpms drop. So the tranny doesn't shift correctly. I get same story from Ford, blah blah KAM, reset, TSB this or that doesnt apply. But I can tell you this, every tsb I read I can honestly relate to this truck. its manf date is 10/10 and final assembly plant was Dearborn. Its horrible to drive, embarrassing at times bc it wont go like a 5.4 should. My 03' was 100xs better than this 10'. Please let me know where to begin or what you think the issue is. Your video is the most realistic and most applicable advice have found to this point. I'm prepared to buy a new tranny or anything in between! Thanks for your help! Tony

Ive got a 2016 F150 EcoBoost with 31000 miles. Had the transmission flushed with a fancy machine. I mentioned to them about this video and your advise about not flushing because it wont do anything but flush the cooler and lines because of the thermal bypass valve. They told me they don't connect to the cooler lines they have a suction tube that goes into the transmission filler opening and another line that connects someplace else (cant remember where). They told me they bypass that valve. Plus the dealer told me that thet valve is not just open and closed that it can open slightly depending on the temp of the fluid allowing fluid to get by it. Now I'm confused and concerned.

So, theres no valve body gaskets with the 6R60? I saw your video on the valve body gasket blowouts causing shift issues on the 5R55S and was wondering if the 6R series X-missions do the same.

Nice review.Sir, i need your advice. I have a 2013 Ford Ranger ( thai / asian version )and it is using a 6R80 transmission . The problem is the 2nd gear ( shift sock occasionally ). My ford mechanic use the OBD scanner and he found out that the 2nd solenoid has a problem . My question is can i change the 2nd solenoid ( amazon sells solenoid kit 7pcs for 6R80) or buy the whole valve body? Thank you

I just bought an 09 F150 with a 5.4 and a 6R80 in it. I got a good deal on it and it has less than 50K on it so I rolled the dice. If push comes to shove, is it possible to swap in a PCM-controlled transmission for the solenoid-body-controlled one? TIA and you're my new best friend.

Oh Crap, I'm approaching 124K miles and I haven't changed the fluid yet. I have done the oil changes of course. No other fluids at this time. How do I tell what Trans I have in my truck? Would a cooling fin pan help? 2014 F150 STX 4x4 5.0l coyote engine 302. Automatic 6 speed Thanks for ALL your tips and videos. I just found out now that It is a removable pan and where the dipstick might be.

I am doing a friend's 2009 Ford 150 4.6L truck transmission fluid change in about 2 weeks. This looks so similar to my 2005 Jaguar S Type R ZF Transmission. His truck has 90k miles. Nothing ever done. Runs great. I was going to just change the filter and clean the pan and that's it. But, now, considering removing the mechatronics or solenoid valve body and the other stuff. Your recommendation? Very much appreciate, thanks,

Great video! I have a 2006 Explorer with the 4.6/6R60, and it is jerky in the first to second shift at times, especially when you come to a quick stop and quickly start again. I got it reflashed at a Ford dealership, but that didn't help. I also had the trans fluid and filter changed (though that was for a shuddering at 45 MPH), and that didn't help the shifting either. I've heard it might be the solenoids, which also lines up with what you said in the video. Any thoughts on that? And any idea on what kind of cost would that be to repair? Once the solenoids are contaminated, what is the fix? I agree with it being a solid trans, though. I've got ~133,000 miles on mine with no other issue than the jerky 1-2 shift which has happened ever since I got it at ~62,300 miles.

I am looking to buy a used 2009/10 f150. After watching this video I am happy to hear how reliable the 6R80 is if it is taken care of but I have one question. If I were to buy an f150 and change the transmission fluid and filter immediately and then change the fluid a few more times over the course of a few months that it would clean out deposits near the solenoids or do they need to be physically cleaned once they are contaminated?

***** They need to be physically cleaned but your method is a great start. Not all of them have severe contamination causing shorts.

Hello and thanks for your video. I own a early 2010 Ford F150 Raptor SVT. Had a cracked main pump seal and solenoid error codes. I ordered a remanufactured valve body complete with calibrated solenoids. This valve body comes with solenoid strategy code and valve body id code. However when scanning with Forscan, there appears to be no PCM Control Module listed with Characterization Update feature listed to enter in these codes that new valve body came with .Question: is there no need to enter in a new solenoid strategy code and valve body id code because this older style used a TCM built into the lead frame and different type of solenoids? Can I get away with just erasing the old adaptive table, and then drive it for the relearn process as outlined? Forscan told me that even the Ford IDS Software does not support reprogramming of a new valve body solenoid strategy code, or valve body id number on my early model 2010 6R80 . What gives, I’m very confused. Please help, thank you. 👍

Great videos! Thanks for all the good info. I have a 2010 F150 with a 6R80 I did a pass through sleeve on. Don't know how I did this, but after having issues and no communication with TCM, found two of the pins in the trans. bent over. Upon trying to straighten them, they broke off. :( Being a 2010, I priced a TCM at my local Ford dealer. $800+ list with my wholesale cost at $660. My questions. 1. Is the TCM replacement a simple job once the pan and filter is down? 2. Are the pins inside the pass through sleeve part of the TCM? 3. Is the TCM and black frame assy. one in the same on a 2010? My local dealer emailed me a picture of the TCM, but the picture didn't show it separated form the valve body. The only other issue I'm having beside this lol, is a shudder on take off. I already have done the slip yolk clean up and re-grease. Maybe the TCM and flash will cure this.

When you suggest changing and filling the transmission in a f-150 at 30,000 miles what exactly do you mean? I understand the flushing machine the dealer uses will not work in the case of the trans with a internal bypass. Thus, when you say change and fill the fluid do you mean a pan drop with filter change or would I be changing the entire transmission fluid? Would I be changing the fluid in the pan along with the filter followed by flushing the old fluid out through the cooler lines 1-2 quarts at a time followed by adding 1-2 quarts the the trans? Also since the dealer uses a flush machine I would opt to service the trans on my own however, will this void the warranty? Sorry for all the questions just needed that to be cleared up. Thanks

My wife's 2012 mustang has started getting a jerk when you let off the gas (like it's downshifting wrong). 3.7L V6 automatic. I wanna do the fluid, and filter swap. Been looking for a lead Frame, but they seem to be non-existent. No engine codes. What would be the minimum parts to change if diy and taking the pan off? Side note, how do find out part numbers that have been updated/replaced by another? I've seen 3 part numbers for the lead frames.

Hi! Recently found (and subbed) your channel. Lots of great info on here. My question is, is my local dealer full of it? I recently purchased a used 2009 F-150 4.6 3V Supercrew with 98k. For the first couple of weeks, it shifted very weird, shuttered and stumbled several times on upshifts and just felt wrong. I took to the dealer for help. Afterwards, they told me the trans was shifting normal, and as it's computer controlled, it just had to learn how I drove, as opposed to the last owner and would straighten itself out. What? Well I've now had it for two months and it seems to shift fine. BS.. or luck? Just curious. Thanks!

Hey so I have a customer with a 2011 5.0 in the shop saying 2nd gear slips when the truck is cold. I drove the truck, and determined 2nd doesn’t slip, but shifts really slow into 3rd which feel like it’s slipping when it’s cold. When it warms up it all shifts perfectly. I did a fluid swap, and it all seems to work good, but problem is I never got to drive it cold again. The truck was in and out like that. I’d pay you to give me some tips and tricks as to what it could be. I wanna make sure the vehicles I work on are done right, and I have less experience than a lube tech. Yes I’m that dumb

The dual port piece that carries fluid between the pump and valve body, which I believe is called the bridge seal, seems near impossible to find as a stand alone part. I will be doing this trans service soon and would like to replace it. Can you recommend a good trans part dealer? Lastly in dropping the valve body on a 2010 F150 5.4 should I make any effort to clean the solenoids/connectors since you said they can collect fine metal particulates? Any help is much appreciated!
