I’ve been a long time Mobil 1 user and on my last oil change on my 2007 Avalanche I decided to use Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic after hearing lots of good reviews about it. I wanted Ultra Platinum but couldn’t find it locally. Even with the Platinum synthetic the engine is quieter. Sometimes I get a tapping at startup because of GM wonderful afm crap. With the Mobil 1 the tapping would sometimes last 30 seconds or more but with the Pennzoil it only lasts maybe 1-2 seconds. I ordered a 3 gallon pack of the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum from Amazon and I’m looking forward to seeing how it works compared to the Platinum synthetic. Only time I've ever seen one that was black, was a woman who brought her corolla that takes 0w-20, but she wanted conventional oil (only comes in 5w-20 in the store) and went on 10k intervals between oil changes. Yup the oil was black, but none of it burned. I’ve been using Penz Ultra Platinum and mostly Castrol for years now without problems. But seeing how much better Valvoline oils have become lately, I’m going to switch over to them now. And also for years Valvoline oils used to be much cheaper option to Mobil 1 but as of recently, they are just as expensive as Mobil 1 today. Walmart is usually the go to spot for oil for me as parts stores mark up their prices anywhere between $5-15 depending on the brand. It’s ludicrous. I used to get into this with people about the old air cooled VW motors. I was a mechanic for many years and if you know the old VW motors you know they tend to fail by the #3 exhaust valve breaking off and spaghettifying the motor. The reason these valves were failing was complex but easy to identify as being a failure in lubrication in the exhaust valve guide from thin burnt oil. Invariably the oil used in those days was Castrol and people loved the stuff but it could not withstand the heat cycles placed upon it from the motor using the oil for cooling as well as lubrication. I found that Valvoline oil did not break down like Castrol and after I started using and recommending Valvoline oil the incidence of failed #3 valves diminished to almost unheard of status. In the old VW air cooled motors the parts that were cooled by air were only the cylinders the main and journal bearings are all cooled by oil only and this heat cycling is hard on oil.

I've been watching you now for the past several months & like the comparisons you make & the advice you give. I've watched this video for the third time and finally subscribed. We bought a new RAV Limited Hybrid last summer & absolutely love the vehicle. It's a huge difference from Mustangs that I broke my eyeteeth on back in the late 60's, but I guess I've changed a bit since I started driving 56 years ago... My question for you, since I plan on changing from strictly using Mobil1 products for the past 30 odd years, is more about oil weight than brands. Our new Toyota 2.5L Atkinson engine calls for 0W16 oil. I've been using 0W20 Mobile1 in our last 4 Honda 3.5L engines with no issues at all, but I'm now convinced that the 3 oils you've mentioned here are better. I would go with the Penz Ultra, but it's not available in 0W16. My next choice is to go with Valvoline Advanced 0W16, but I'm not sure it's any better (although cheaper) than the TGMO (made by Mobil BTW) 0W16 I'm currently using. I'm also not 100% convinced that I need to stick with 0W16 in this engine. In several other countries the 16 weight oil isn't even available & they're using 5W30. What are your thoughts on using 0W20 oil in this Atkinson engine? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately the only brand I can find on the shelf (0W16) is Mobil 1. I agree with the engine clatter occurring sooner than expected. I lucked out about a year ago when AutoZone stopped selling Castrol Edge 0W16 and reduced it to $2/quart and bought everything on the shelf. Glad to hear that Valvoline Advanced has a good additive package.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Can't go wrong with it. It's an oil you know is better than most. Right at the top.

This is true from my own experience. I service my 2 Prius. One is 0w20 and another is 0w16. Mobil in all flavors has been consistently the loudest to an annoyingly loud level, specially noticeable in a hybrid. Valvoline has been my #1 choice just on a noise level. Still running through a stash of Quaker state and Pennzoil that I got from Walmart pricing errors. Them too are also top notch, but prefer the price of Valvoline advanced with $5 rebates, hard to beat.

Valvoline has something new on their website. I can’t find it anywhere! It’s basically Valvoline Extended Protection High mileage with Ultra Maxlife. I have Mobil 1 EP HM in my sump right now and I only plan to run it out to about 3,000 miles just from seeing what I saw here. Definitely don’t want to waste it, but damn I always thought Valvoline was junk, glad to see it’s actually has a really stout additive package to it. If only I could find the New valvoline formulation!

Thank you very much for this video. I was uncertain about using Valvoline but it is more readily available in my area than Castrol Edge. I have to drive an hour to get Castrol Edge, but an auto parts store only 30 minutes away caries Valvoline as their flagship brand. I might switch to Valvoline if it does well for my 1.5 Ecoboost and can protect my engine on long non-stop trips from Idaho to Portland Oregon and Salt Lake City. *UPDATE - Took the advice and got Valvoline Advance, they didn’t have extended protection, but i switched anyway. Hopefully runs quieter and less chattery than Castrol Edge*

@@marketingmajor8126 So far so good. My fuel mileage average has gone up about 1 MPG. And I had an issue with Castrol Edge where the engine would very slightly stutter on acceleration at low rpm under heavy load, and it doesn't do that anymore since switching to Valvoline Advanced.

I just bought four garage box's (12 qt) of Valvoline Synthetic Advanced 5w30 directly from Valvoline for $47/box. Comes out to 4/qt. with tax. Shipping was free. I went with the Advanced since it has the dexos label. I use it my 22 Silverado 2500 gas and 2018 F150 w/2.7 ecoboost. That's the best deal I've found on oil yet.

I watch Todd’s videos from Project Farm religiously and I think some of his most in depth videos were that of the oil shootouts. When they first came out, that’s when I started buying Pennzoil Ultra Plat and I havnt looked back. Even in just the daily commuter cars and my in laws car, they all get the good stuff.

Some stuff most things I agree with him on other things I don't agree with him on because again he doesn't do what I do in the industry he test things at home but he doesn't actually repair vehicles and stuff but for the most part I can agree with him on most things that he does because he puts in the work to get it done
@pkmachinegun Жыл бұрын
@@FordBossMeI could definitely see where home testing wouldn’t translate 100% into real world wear and tear on an engine but I do think that he gets as close a possible to the ASTM standard as one could in a consumer setting. I will have to take a look through your catalog and see your test videos. 👊🏼

Loving the content lately on the different oils very interesting! I get a kick out of how hung up people get on brands of oils though. Anymore whatever meets spec and is the cheapest gets dumped in my engine. Sometimes it’s supertec, sometimes Costco, napa, the list goes on. If you aren’t taking your car to the track every weekend whatever is cheapest will be fine…considering you are doing reasonable intervals.

Interesting that there's so much of a difference in oil additive packages of new (un-used) oils. I'll be getting the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum next time i do an oil change. I just did an oil change with the Valvoline Extended Protection about 1,000 miles ago, so good to see it's also a very good option. Valvoline used to have an oil called Modern Engine for 2014 and newer GDI & tGDI engines. But i think the newest API thing means any oil with that on it won't let LSPI happen in turbo engines.

Great review. I usually run up to 5k between oil changes so I don't care about the longevity of the oil past that. My question is which of these protects the engine best against wear especially direct injection engines? Basiclally I'm looking for the best wear protection with less carbon build up on the valves. I've tried 4 different versions of Mobil-1 synthetic oil and in each case it made the engines in which I was using it excessively noisy. The last version I tried was the ESP (pricey stuff!) and with that version the noise became so loud including chain noise that I dumped it out within 50 miles and refilled with Castrol Edge. All noise stopped immediately.

I think the type of engine you have and the weight of the oil is important factors. I know Rich can't have them all tested. My oil I use now is Castrol Magnatec and now it's called Castrol GTX full synthetic. For a Honda 1.8 Engine. Seems to do good. Not saying it's better than Ultra Platinum, buts Castrol GTX is more available and slightly cheaper. When I get a brand new car someday or newer car low miles, I will most likely be using the Ultra Platinum.

Hey Rich, great content as always! Quick question, I have an 08 P71 requiring 5W-20 oil. I currently run Amsoil Signature Series and love it. I am considering trying Pennzoil Ultra soon as I found it on sale recently. But with the engine getting around 110,000 miles, any input on switching to 5W-30 with its age? As I understood it, Ford only went to 20 weight for fuel efficiency with newer regulations. We know that the 2V 4.6 does not have complicated VVT in the cam system so I don’t have to fear clogging or starving that area. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you and Be Blessed!
