Fordson Major Diesel Injector Rebuild

Today we rebuild the injectors on my Fordson Major Diesel tractor. The injectors were worn and plugging up, new injector tips were needed! I show you how to replace the worn injectors and install the new injectors. This is a simple process if you are mechanically minded and are willing to be patient. Remember to always keep your injector parts clean! Contaminants will prevent new parts from operating correctly.

Hi Bill, greetings from London! Great video thanks! Do you mind if I ask you a question please? I’m about to take the fuel pump and injectors off my Mk I fordson engine in my boat. Regarding the timing on pump , do I just need to make sure the lines are matched up on pump and flange when I take it off and put it back ( obviously I won’t turn the engine when it’s off) Cheers. Hi there. Video was helpful. I have held onto what was my grandfathers 5000 Super Major and am looking to tackle its injectors soon. Can you confirm that you were able to get the injectors out without having to loosen the rocker arm components? I have seen some other literature and videos suggesting the rocker has to be removed. I am just trying to understand the task before tearing into it.

I was able to remove all of the injectors without removing the rocker arm assembly. The rockers are held in place with springs, and I was able to slide them on the shaft in my engine. I did double-check with a feeler guage, though, that the valve clearance was within specifications and that had not changed.

Hey Bill Paul here I just had a great idea perhaps one of your next videos could be related to the pneumatic Governor function and how easy it is to check for a bad diaphragm. I did that today and I found two problems the diaphragm was torn and the dampener valve was broken that dampener valve is very special in shape and length it slides in and out of a bushing to keep it straight as it moves during the push pull of engine operation. The diaphragm is only 30 to $40 depending on where you go the test is easy it's in the book and the dampener valve may be difficult to find but I believe I know where to get them. I've read on that, mine is in working condition so I have felt no need to take it apart. I considered buying a spare diaphragm to keep on the shelf, but seems as though they are fairly easy to come by still.

Hi Bill happy new year, thanks for this video, I do have also have a Fordson should be 1963, where is the decompression lever I do not have a manual for this thing, seems the engine is heavy for the starter cant turn

Decompression lever is on the front of the valve cover it's about an 8inch long metal lever. Mine has an aluminum knob at the end. I'm not sure if the later engines had them You should check your battery, cables, starter, and solenoid. Any of those can cause what you're describing. Also disengage the PTO and hydraulics when starting. Cold hydraulic oil is enough to prevent the engine from turning over.

There is a copper crush washer between the injector and head. they can be reused but it's a safe bet to replace them.

Does the fuel return line have washers on both sides? Or if any...referenceing top of injectors

Yes, I believe so. I have seen references to both with and without them. I had leaking issues, so I used thin copper crush washers, and that stopped my leaking. Since this video, I have done a lot more work in the top of the engine.

I have a 1953 power major just installed new clutch kit and redid the wiring system on it . went to fire it up and started right up the problem is its burning way to much fuel its smoking like and freight train also there is no fuel returning back to the tank so im sure its burning the return fuel aswell ? Any suggestions? Thank you..

I'm going to say you have some injector problems. Potentially the return line is plugged, you should get the injectors tested on a bench tester. If they are stuck or the springs are weak they will let too much fuel in and at the wrong time. There is an adjustment screw on the pump too, but I would wait until the injectors are in tip top shape.

Starting at the radiator towards the firewall is the first valve the intake or the exhaust?

look at the manifolds, it should be 1- exhaust than intake 2- intake than exhaust 3- exhaust than intake 4- intake than exhaust

The injectors are Sparex, depending on your location in the world there is different options for buying them.

Going to say your most likely issue is compression is too low, valve timing or valve clearance could be out of adjustment.

@@paulchace2391 So to my ability here on the internet to guide you... Get it warmed up, let it idle for 5-10 minutes, start loosening the lines at each injector one at a time. Each injector should make a noticeable change in how the engine runs. if it doesn't you need to look at adjusting the timing 1-2 degrees in either direction to see if that helps. If that makes no difference I would not hesitate on taking the injectors into a diesel shop to be rebuilt. Sparex still makes new tips for the Simms injectors, the diesel shop should be able to set the spring tension for correct pop-off pressure. I say jump to injectors because as far as diesel parts go they are cheap, and the most overlooked on maintenance. I believe Fordson called out for replacing injector tips and setting the pop-off pressure around every 500hrs of engine run time.

I see where yesterday's tractors.com has the nozzles available and your video helped to make sure that I will assemble it properly, I thank you for that and everything else you do for guys like me

Just watched your vid and also have been rebuilding my 1955 Major engine all on my chanel. Any way I looked up the manual to give you the torque sellings to replace your polish grunts. The retaining cap screws as you said tighten evenly to a toque of 10-15 ft-Lbs and nozzle retaining nut to 50ft-Lbs.
