Same here. Not sure why theirs so much hate on the 5.4. Just hit 200K miles on mine and still runs great. However every 3 months or so I end up replacing something. Alternator, pulley bearings, starter, ignition coils.... Always something to fix but the engine itself is great. After seeing this video i'm not going to attempt replacing these roller followers but am definitely taking it to a mechanic to replace.

I have a 2008 Ford Expedition. I was blessed to have come across your page on KZbin to better educate me on this motor. You REALLY helped me out. I spent a while looking places up, took your advice on a lot of things to look at for at dealerships so I drove to Orlando to get the roller followers, camshafts (if needed) and timing done. I was going to get the updated oil pump too. In Miami I was quoted 4,500 and in Orlando I was quoted $2,700, both at Ford dealerships…Orlando being the cheapest. Once the tech looked at the truck I was told I have metal shavings in my oil filter and said that I need a new motor because the motor is eating itself from the inside out. They did not open the motor at all. I requested prior to coming up here that I wanted to see whatever the tech finds but there was no communication. Now I am headed back to Miami to another dealership for a second opinion. I sure wish I was near Chicago brother, you would definitely done my motor over/replaced it. It’s so hard finding people that’ll do it right! Thanks for all those videos my friend. Any advice will help out.
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 2 жыл бұрын
As long as the engine oil was maintained you will be ok with just a timing job. Fine metal in the filter would be the result of the chain hitting the front cover like they all do, no big deal. $2,700 sounds way too low like they are not replacing everything, $4,500 sounds right for a dealer. I even charge $3,500 to $4k with all the extras as an independent.

I am doing a timing chain, cam phaser job with new lifters and roller rockers. I had a huge problem trying to remove the old followers on some of the cylinders following your guidance. I ended up having to remove the cam shafts to get them all out. I though maybe the chain had slipped and caused the cam lobes to be too far from the base circle to get them out and I didnt want too risk popping off keepers or other damage. After following all your steps for timing chain and phaser replacement will all Ford parts and having replaced all the lifters before reinstalling the cams, I then started to reinstall the followers and once again was having difficulty putting them in. Finally after struggling through 3 of them I inspected the genuine OTC 6684 tool that I had purchased from a defunct Ford Dealership selling off tools, I found that the part that pushes the valve down was bent! It wasnt real obvious but it was enough to only allow the valve to be depressed partially. So I carefully straightened out the tool and it was like magic. All those follower went in with no trouble. Just goes to show how careful you are to do it right some things just go wrong. Im just happy to have it resolved. I will be done with the job tommorrow. Im 68 years old and a retired Ford Tech, but I havent done major engine work for decades as I specialized in electrical/electronics/AC/ etc. Thanks for all your great videos and guidance.

I bought a 2005 f150 Lariat with 136k miles that was in great shape, but had a misfire when I test drove it and also a tick. I first did the spark plugs and coils and found all but 2 were loose and one had the end broke off. It drove better but still didn’t have power and felt like it was still misfiring and ticking . I then decided to change all the roller followers and lash adapters. I took the valve covers off and found my problem, it was a roller follower locked up and the cam had been just grinding away on it on the right side of my engine. After replacing my cam, roller followers, and lash adapters my truck runs like new. I couldn’t have done it without your amazing videos!

Great video thanks! I missed the "very important part" about pushing as you compress the spring. A bit of stomach in the throat moment when I saw a keeper fall as I lifted out the rocker. Luckily the tool had shifted a bit and the spring was pushing the valve sideways preventing it from falling into the cylinder. With some strong magnets, a little pry to center the top, I managed to get it all back together, released the tension to make sure the keepers were seated and then recompressed it to put the new rocker in.

Rookie mistake... I placed a towel near the phaser to prevent anything from falling down into the pan. Placed another towel on top and cleaned up all gasket material and dirt. Started working and was stumped why the engine was so hard to turn over with 18mm. Realized I forgot to remove the towel and binded it up in the phaser, chain, etc. Slowly cutaway material and turned the motor over manually until I could pull the towel out of the teeth. Hopefully I did not stretch the chain or throw off timing. Guess I will be doing complete timing job next. Still can't believe I did that... thank you for the great video!

Fantastic tutorial. My 2011 Expedition sounded like a diesel and had lost power under acceleration. Figured it was timing related or something else. Used a stethoscope to figure out where the sound was coming from, it was loudest at the rear most passenger side roller follower. Turns out one roller follower was completely seized and the other 2 on that back cylinder weren't too far behind it. I figure it wasn't too couldn't have been too far from grenading itself completely. Great tutorial and the tool recommendations were very helpful to be able to swap out the roller followers... Saved me from spending $$$ at a shop or worse yet, having to replace the vehicle completely.

Mark, I quit fighting to get each individual rocker fished out. I remove the camshaft. The cam phaser more than likely needs to replaced as a regular maintenance item anyway. Laying across the fender doing it 12 times gets old. Usually it can be done 30 minutes faster. That adds up to an hour total. Thanks for the educational videos!

@@FordTechMakuloco how do you know if you have uneven pressure on camshaft? What do you recommend if there is?
@5rand0n7

@@littlemirage If the roller followers are installed in the cylinder head and you start loosening the camshaft caps, you will put uneven pressure/stress on the camshaft. Imaging holding a small twig at one end. Now touch the other end to the ground and begin to press the end on the ground. The twig will begin to bend and eventually snap somewhere in the middle. Hope that analogy helps.

I have a very desperate question and have been chasing the dreaded vct solenoid issue, just a little history behind the situation,I have a 2008 f150 5.4, I was driving down the road and lost all power and had a bad knock, well I found that my head on the right hand side suffered a catastrophic failure and ate the camshaft of what looked like it was from lack of oil so then the fun begins of course, I replaced the head with a reman from Napa, I watched all your videos on the 5.4 3v it seems lol so I checked and changed the vct solenoids with ford parts, the phasers and timing chains and guides, and tensioner, all ford, I replaced the oil pump with the 360hv oil pump, I also went as far as checking the thrust washers and even though they looked very good I replaced them. I have removed both the mounting plates for the solenoids as well, found a piece of debris in the one one the right hand side which I believe lead to the failure of the head but not 100% sure, now I have the solenoid issue and I can make it act up of course hot and bumping the gas in gear, but when I go to the solenoid and unplug it it don't change but if I unplug only the right hand side and run it it won't fail. As I stated everything is new and clean am I missing something or could it just be a faulty new solenoid?

Had broken cam follower on the #7 cylinder, Ford Dealer said there were two repair options: 1. Replace the cam follower $600 2. Replace the motor for $10,000 (FYI the 5.4 is only $1500 at Rock Auto and most mechanics will charge about $1500 in labor to replace the motor) 👉🏻Claiming he couldn’t determine if the Cam has been scarred by the broken follower, the dealer recommended option 2. 👉🏻I chose option 1 and it was the right choice.

I swear the dealerships are getting sketchier and sketchier, they recommend shit like money grows on trees and like telling customers a motor is toast when it is not like that won't hurt Fords reputation, and cause a long time Ford customer to look else where, it is amazing to me. Ford MoCo needs to get a tighter grip on these clowns.

Thanks to you i managed to get my timing done on my 13 expedition! I did have a big question though in regards to oil pressure. Where you talk about the hole in the new roller followers, and how it differs from the original, how much of a difference would it make? Reason i ask is, after flipping through tons of forums and comments i ended up going with the melling m340hv pump, given at the time of install it was closing in on 200k and all sources i was reading were saying how much more benefit the higher volume would be. Now that ill be going back in to get these adjusters and arms done, i want to make sure that increased pressure wouldnt cause more harm than good. Thanks for all you do!

If you have a slight tick, it's time to have it checked. When the roller follower wears enough to turn its' self sideways the engine damage can be catastrophic and a new engine will be the only repair.

When it comes to turning the over a 5.4 engine , if you have the crankshaft damper pulley off the best way is to use a socket that is actually made for a sbc engine. Sounds weird but apparently the modular ford engines use the same size crank snout and keyway as a small block Chevy. A socket that comp cams makes that is designed to be used when degreeing a camshaft makes it so nice. If you're working on these engines a lot it's well worth the money.

I'm glad you pointed out the re-design on the follower cam lobe oiler hole. Just got in a new set and at first glance I thought Ford forgot to drill out the hole. You can clearly see the pin hole on the outside, but the pin hole on the lash adjuster side is not as visible at first glance. The bore is at an angle now to better aim the oil at the lobe and the follower bearing. Question though, since the new design has been in use for 5+ years now, have seen any issues with the pin hole getting clogged causing oil starvation on the lobe and follower bearing? I'll be installing my second Ford Performance follower/lash adjuster kit on my '06 Mustang GT 4.6L 3V. Just turned 300k and have been noticing ticking at start up until engine runs for a couple of minutes. Last replacement was at 175k along with a complete timing job and Melling standard volume pump.

DId the phasers back in 2010 when the thought was that the phasers were the issue. I was wondering, do the lash adjusters need to be replaced? I planned on doing the whole timing chain, phasers, solenoids, tensioners, oil pump, rocker followers. Should I also replace the lash adjusters? Also are the cams known to go bad? That would add another $1500 to the cost. Part of me wonders if I shouldn't just try to buy a used 2011 or later truck!

What's your recommendation on replacing the lash adjusters when replacing the rockers? I have 6.8 3v that I need to do all the followers on and I was planning to just reuse the lash adjusters. Unless the adjuster is collapsed or obviously damaged, I don't see a point in replacing them -- unless there is some tribal knowledge indicating otherwise.
