@James Masn you are definitely correct but i would like to add one reason for the lack of knowledge. Mechanics do not get paid enough. Anyone who has the mental capacity to do this kind of work could easily go into another industry. They will make more, won't have to take out a mortgage for tools, and won't destroy their body in the process. So from what I see everyone is going to enjoy the shortage of skilled mechanics for the foreseeable future.
@Mr_Joseph979
@Mr_Joseph979 4 жыл бұрын
@@bobt8578 you are exactly correct! Between the cost of tools, advanced brand specific education, getting paid book time, shop/dealership corruption and a host of other things is why I didn't stay working as an auto mechanic. Many car guys also won't get to be exposed to but so many scenarios and the lack of good pay won't justify staying on the job. There is already a shortage of mechanics in this field because of the reasons I've stated. Sad

Joseph Miller it’s not only that you can only learn mostly through doing and Brian does a lot of these so it’s easy for him. He knew right away it wasn’t from diagnosing it was due to experience and doing. These things need to roll in the shop for most unless the employer sends techs for training

I'm a huge ford guy and a buddy of mine had a 05 mustang gt (4.6 3v), had a dead cylinder for intake and he took the vehicle to 4 different shops that replaced basically everything but still had a misfire. I then told him bring it by. I popped the valve cover and seen a roller popped off, sadly the cam didn't survive. All this knowledge is because of this awesome channel. Thank you bryan.

Brian, my 2005 F-150 had misfire codes also. My scan tool was just a basic Actron. Nothing like what you have. I replaced plugs and coil packs and it didn't help. this truck had 201800, miles on it. So I took it to the Ford Dealer and asked them to hook it up to there computer and check it out. This truck's engine had oil changes every 3000 miles, give or take 500 miles or so. They said I needed a new engine! I believed them so ten thousand dollars later and four weeks I was back on the road. After watching most of your ford videos' I believe the problem was roller followers! I'll never believe a dealer again. You are the Man! You've also helped me do other repairs on this truck. Next week I'll be replacing a rear ABS sensor, fuel pump module, and oil change on rear pumpkin. Please keep up the Great videos I watch them all the time.

Had an 04 and it was meticulously maintained w Ford oil at Ford garages and it seized oil rings. Gots did a short block on warranty at 149000 kms. Reused all other parts. It ran better but always had a shaky idle. Decided to pull covers and found exact same thing on cylinder 6 a week after I got the truck back from Ford. But a new follower in and switched to amsoil and that motor ran well till 420000kms when I totaled the truck

I've come upon this same situation about 3 times. Have also seen it on cylinder 3. Replaced cam, timing set and roller rockers. Just had another 07 three valve come in 3 days ago. Looks at cam error pids and seen the common right bank that always goes out at -14. Inspected with bore scope into oil fill and found the common right chain guide gone due to blown gasket on tensioner. Timing set definitely needed. Removed the easier left cover and found the left guide broken. The engine was oil starved for many seasons. Everything was nasty under the valve cover. My recommendation was getting a remanufactured engine. Great video for those people that don't understand Fords. Thanks

Any time a technician tells me the PCM is bad I tell them to go find something else wrong. It's 99% of the time NOT a PCM problem.

They can't though. They've read through the paragraphs, answered yes or no when the book asked. That's it, that's all the tech can do. By the way, the last step in the Ford service/troubleshooting manual is ALWAYS, replace PCM.

@@zachcoldwell7978 I know. All manufacturers seem to operate the same way. But it's almost never the PCM. I always tell the tech he has to pay for the PCM if it doesn't fix the car. That's usually when they go find the real problem.

I have an 09 4.6 3v that I decided to change the plugs on since they had 157,000 (truck is new to me 3rd owner) 2nd owner kept great care and had all dealership records. Anyway was running fine until I changed plugs ! Now I have misfires on different cylinders but always #4 ! Is this a issue with 4.6s ?

I learned my lesson in my 2010 4.6 with a hard to diagnose misfire. I had a miss fire replaced a bunch of things. A few weeks later I heard a pop them rattle. The follower had seized and popped off. Messed up the cam and dropped a valve in cylinder 4. That was an expensive misfire. Haha

Great video! Thank you! I’m pretty sure mine is just an exhaust leak because it goes away almost entirely when the timing changes during warm up. I am getting a P0300 every now and then and I can feel the miss when under load but I believe it’s just a bad coil boot. My engine only has 112,000 on it. I maintain the oil like clockwork. It’s important in these engines. Otherwise they are prone to a lot of problems.

After looking through your 5.4L 3V tutorials as well as others to set about fixing my 05 F150 (jumped time, chewed up valve cover), I have one question I haven’t seen addressed. Should I lock the cam phasers after replacing with the OEM timing kit set and upgrading oil pump, or leave them be? Thanks for being so generous with your time making these videos, and to anyone else who wants to chime in!
