Katie was right. After watching some Vietnamese comedy shows, it makes sense that non-Vietnamese speakers would miss a lot in their humor style. Most obvious is the word play, and there's a lot of it. An English example is Abbot and Costello having a confusing conversation about the lower birth on a train being higher than the upper birth. (only one is talking about the price). I think there is also some humor regarding "honorifics" that would not be as relevant in Western societies.

This classic romantic comedy was a huge hit in 1986 and is still as funny as ever. I saw this in the theater when it came out, and the whole theater burst into cheers and applause at the ending, probably the greatest final scene ever in a romantic comedy. Paul Hogan became known in the U.S. for a very popular series of commercials he did for the Australia Tourism Board. He presented the same sort of character, a super-friendly regular guy who invited you to visit him in Australia. He capitalized on that popularity to make this movie. He and his co-star actually got married after the movie was made.

@mikealvarez2322 Ай бұрын
@@VictorLugosi Creepy is in the mind of the beholder. I grew up in the 50s where virtue was prized. It was a time when out of wedlock birth was a thing of shame and no girl or woman would even think about being proud of having an abortion. If an unmarried woman gave birth it was no cause for celebration. No young lady I ever knew had tattoos or body piercings. As a result of these times I would guess that between 75-90% of kids grew up with their biological parents. Guns could be mail ordered, including WW2 military weapons, and there were no school shootings. Highschool kids brought their guns to school during hunting season so they could take off for the dove fields Fridays after school, and there were no school shootings. Bad language was never heard in school because that was an automatic 3 day suspension with a zero in class each day. I never even heard of a teacher being assaulted or cursed at. BTW, I went to an inner city public school. The Asian Angels and Movie Munchies remind me of the people I grew up with. I hope Vietnam never goes down the path the US has gone down. We fixed some of the things that were wrong in America but threw the baby out with the bath water. If that's creepy, then I'm proudly a creep.

FYI. Our pubs in Australia are general called.. "Hotel"s. I mean, we call it a "pub", but it often has "Hotel" in the name. Many years ago, to serve alcohol at pub, you were required to have accommodation available. And since food is generally available when you provided accomodation, pubs were basically a place you could eat, drink and sleep. So "Hotel" was and is still used (though, few places have rooms for the night now)

@@timmooney7528 ... The two names are related. European settlers discovered iguanas in Central and South America. When they arrived in Australia/SE Asia, they saw similar lizards and called them iguanas. The name evolved into "guanas" and then "goannas".

Crocodile Dundee II is another great movie. When this movie came out, there were no cell phones - that wouldn't happen for 10-15 years. What they called "Goanna" was likely some kind of lizard. A "Sheila" is a slang word for woman.

we used to find black and garden snakes in the back yard or out in the woods. if they were babies, we assumed they'd been abandoned, so we'd keep them as pets until got bigger and then let them go... far from the house, of course. we knew what the poisonous ones in the area looked like and just stayed away from them.

I saw a bit of this this movie on TV in Hanoi while backpacking in Vietnam in 1996. It was dubbed in Vietnamese and the TV station obviously could only afford one actor. The actor they chose was a woman, so the entire movie had dialogue dubbed by a Vietnamese woman. The fact that the bit of the movie I saw was the bit involving the stuffed crocodile in the pub made it somewhat surreal, to say the least.

Two great australian comedies you guys would love are Muriel’s Wedding, and, The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Ps crocs dont have any cutting teeth, so they either rip a piece off their victims and the victim bleeds to death or they drown. Then the croc stows their victim somewhere until they decompose enough to tear bits off easily and swallow. Saltwater crocs are scary animals. ‘Goanna’ is the australian word for what you guys would know as a monitor lizard. There are lots of different types of monitor lizards in australia and east asia. The end scene is how Australian sheepdogs cross over the top of sheep that are crowded into big pens. They just walk over them like that.

So, this is a film about culture shock... but it's really more of a commentary about how we live in the big city, rather than the primitiveness of the outback. But there is a second culture shock here, though less noticeable at first - the female reporter isn't just a reporter: she's part of a very elite, wealthy, and high-class section of society, which also makes her attitudes towards certain things - like drug use and open relationships - foreign to (most of) us.
