I've wanted to learn Russian since I was 15 or 16. I'm 52 now and finally getting around to making a real effort to learn it on my own. I've never thought of it as a aurally aggressive language. Then again, I just really love to listen to it. Just last weekend I went to a local Eastern European market to have a look around. When I went to pay for my items I was behind a woman who spoke with the cashier for about 5 minutes in Russian. They eventually stopped and apologized for taking up so much time. I told them it was ok. I just loved to hear them speak. Lol so they proceeded to go another 5 minutes while I stood there going "Well I know what THAT word was...and THAT one...." but everything else was a mystery. For now, anyway. :)

I hear similar things said of German, that it’s aggressive and harsh sounding as I do Russian. I don’t think it applies to either one. Some of that perception I think boils down to the way the languages are presented from Hollywood. Let’s face it, both countries have had adversarial relationships with the U.S. over the years, and I think Hollywood has taken liberties at times to make the language sounds even more harsh. Especially anything involving Nazis or Hitler.

First of all, you are sweet. About Russian, I have listened to it a lot and read even more in the last couple of years, and I can understand quite a bit now. What helps is my native language, Serbian, which is broadly similar, but words the Russians use are often archaic in my language, or have acquired different meanings, etc. You ceartainly cannot understand much on the first try, you have to think, but more you listen to, easier it is. Bad side of such a passive approach is that you do not practice any speaking. The language is very soft and emotional. I am at loss why some westerners find it rough sounding; I could understand someone saying that for German or English, or my own language even.

I just came across this. I learned Russian when I was in the US Army and afterwards ended up working with Russian-speaking immigrants for about 30 years. I also spent six months working in Russia. One of the huge differences between Russian and English is intonation. After a few years of working with immigrants a Polish colleague worked with me to improve my intonation in Russian so that my clients would not only hear me but believe what I was saying. It was hard for me, because it does sound rude to Americans. Once I got it, comprehension improved on both sides. The funny thing is that after a conversation with my clients, my American colleagues would be horrified at how we "yelled" at each other and ask me what was wrong. I'd be shocked and explain that there was nothing wrong, that it was a simple, agreeable conversation. I can go back and forth easily now and the intonation changes with the language. I never thought of Russian as agressive or harsh as some people do. The funny thing is that it is often the "soft sounds," that slip foreigners up rather than the "hard sounds." When I lived in Russia, I learned Russian романсы (как на пример Не уезжай ты мой голубчик и Утро туманное), which I'd never heard before and fell in love with. Now I have a whole group of them I sing. Needless to say, I love the language.

I find this to be an interesting video! Most of these I either hadn't heard of, or have, and didn't know they speak Russian! I _did_ know that Merkel speaks Russian, presumably because she grew up in East Germany when it was still a satellite of the USSR. Also, at 5:40, you asked why so many foreigners think Russian is an "aggressive language". As a non-Russian (I am from the USA), I would guess that this has something to do with Hollywood and how, in many Hollywood movies, most of the Russians are bad guys, whether it be the KGB agents of spy movies, or the boxer of _Rocky_ _IV,_ or even the mind-controller of _Black_ _Widow._ This is the same with Germans and the German language, except with Nazis of World War II movies instead of communists. Lastly, you asked why I am interested in the Russian language. Like some of these celebrities, I also want to know a lot more about the culture of Russia, which is just as well, since, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, Hollywood does not do a good job at teaching Russian culture. You, though, are very informative on both the language and the culture! For more information on the stereotype of the harsh German language (sounds familiar?): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqbbmIB9d96gpdU

Ashton, aggressive? Really? Trevor Noah does a Russian accent in one of his stand up routines where he portrays it as quietly menacing, which is a little bit closer to what we are used to from Hollywood portrayals. I do think Russian is a beautiful language and I find it’s mostly spoken rather softly, although the intonation range can go much higher than American English and there are times when it can sound a little shrill and hysterical to American ears, especially if a woman is speaking and she is arguing passionately about something. Even the question intonation can sound very exaggerated compared to English. But in general, I wouldn’t call it aggressive at all. I think Ashton was trying to be funny and the joke fell a little flat to anyone with any passing familiarity with the language. Also, I imagine there are a vast number of regional accents and differences that I wouldn’t even be able to detect as a nonnative.

I think a lot of America's stigma of Russian being an "aggressive" language, like German, is we spent 50 years in direct confrontation with Russia as our only close rival. The iron curtain probably didn't help that idea very well. Kinda like how a lot of Russians' views on us are of greed, gluttony, and braggadociousness. Which, to be fair, true.

I ran into this video today and I found the entire thing pretty interesting. I am not a huge expert in English, it's my second language, but there was something about it I learned during my first year in the US. In American English the word sportsman means a fisherman or a hunter. If you want to talk about gymnast, runner, football player, or anybody like that, Americans use the word athlete. I hope that was useful.

Проблема голливуда, что они специально пытаются выставлять русский язык либо в агрессивном, либо в клоунском ключе. Не всегда, но в большинстве случаев.

If people learn a few phrases in Russian, it doesn’t mean that they speak fluently, unfortunately, I should say ,Russian language sounds very aggressive. I am living in USA almost 50 years and working as a registered nurse . Sometimes I was in trouble, because, when I was giving some comments or instructions to my patience, it sounds to them ,very aggressive and people complain about me to my administration.I do have a very heavy Russian accent.😢 So was Ayn Rand, great America writer, with very strong Russian accent, until the day she passed away
