The thing I love about Paddy is that even his gesticulation becomes Thai 😀 His face expressions and everything. It's like he's totally immersed in the Thai way of being. I agree with Thais liking it when foreigners speak the language, sometimes not being fluent, just trying to learn even the basics. For example, few weeks ago I was at the till at a supermarket, the cashier was speaking to me in English and I was replying in my basic Thai. She asked me if I spoke Thai and I just replied I was learning. She was so surprised and happy to hear that. She gave me the nicest wai in all of my time here in Thailand. Her appreciation and gratitude were so real, it made my day ❤️

Paddy's Thai pronounciation is quite good. Salute to you Paddy. And, the so crutial thing that both of you have pointed out is that, by be able to talk and understand Thai language, you will totally and completely have so much deeper perceptives and understanding of Thai. Everything you have understood about Thai will be up to the many next levels, by miles, including your own thoughts. Thais too are so appriciated about this.

I’ve been living in BKK for five years and have quite a bit of Thai under my belt but I am not exactly conversational. Paddy mentioned immersion and that is what I really need right now. My wife and I are moving to Isaan next year and I am hoping to get that immersion in the village. Yesterday I went to get my car washed and spoke Thai to the guy working there. He smiled and seemed to genuinely appreciate my effort.

The "mai bpen rai" sentiment that you feel throughout Thailand is why I love the country too. My 2nd trip to Thailand in 2014, it stood out to me as I sat in a mall in Chiang Mai, I was just people watching, and I noticed how everyone was leisurely strolling around, taking their time, they all seemed more at ease with the current state of affairs than I was used to seeing people at home. I'm not from the US, or New York, but New York is known for fast-paced life and fast-paced people, where people walk with speed and intention, and little interest in who or what is around them. That's similar to the way people are in my home city. It seems that in my culture, people think that if you're walking with pace and intent, you must have things to do, you’re busy, therefore your life's together, and you're important. If you have to wait in line at the DMV, you have to look like you're wasting your time, because who would enjoy spending time at the DMV? Only someone with no life and nothing better to do. That feeling, permeates my culture. The expectation for everyone to be busy, or they're a loser. Whereas if you come to Thailand with that same attitude, it just won't wash, people won't think your life's together, they'll think you're weird, and unapproachable. They'll just think you're rude I think this "mai bpen rai" attitude could stem from the Buddhist underpinning of Thai culture.

@Ned88Man 2 жыл бұрын
that sentiment is one of the reasons why I love the country. It is also a MAJOR downfall for the population at large as it prevents concepts like foresight, hindsight, oversight planning and motivation from being utilised. it definitely does stem from the Buddhist underpinning of Thai culture, the essence of "being here now, being present" or that nothing is guaranteed, you might not be here tomorrow, so why try too hard or think too much. At first its a refreshing attitude, but when trying to conduct business or live a life with goals and personal motivation, it becomes a real hinderance...and is often used as a cloak to hide many undesirable personal traits..

I have been learning Thai solo for the past 4 years, on and off here in Shanghai. I say learning solo and not teaching myself because that would be inaccurate, it is impossible to teach yourself. I have a ticket and will be in Thailand in 10 days for at least for a 10 year period. Never spoken Thai to a person, so it is gonna be interesting to find out how my Thai is , so that is quite surreal for me to think about. PETE - loved the question about hearing the word "farang". It was unexpected and points to how you understand life here. I appreciated that neither of you see it as racist, and pointed out that hearing it reminds us that we will never fully belong in this culture. For me, I see that Thai people identify other individuals by their most outstanding feature as a method of expediency. Something like saying "the guy in the yellow jacket", but our most outstanding feature is that we are western. Doesn't feel racist at all, but rather a different way of identifying than western culture might think appropriate. It's hard to process for me sometimes when someone I hadn't seen in a while siad to me, "Oh my God. You're so fat!!" but they did it in a way that is so clearly happy to see me that I realize, in the strangest way, it's about connecting.

If you would like to learn thai language, you need to start with thai 44 alphabets first, both writing and spelling. But it will be easy for remembering the thai alphabets by singing the thai alphabet song fluently. This is the most important. The next step you need to know the thai Vowels. Another steps you need to know about the Consonants with 4 tone markers. With thai alphabets vowels and consonants you could make the thai words, In each thai words, it has a specfic meanings. With variety thai words, You could make the Sentence. That for all thai language basically.

Good interview Pete. Learning Thai has certainly given Paddy a lot of opportunities. Paddy's Thai is impressive. I've been in Thailand the best part of 15 years, but when I'm in conversation with Thai family and friends in the family village, I usually find I'm way to slow to keep up with the conversation. They do mostly speak Lanna Thai though, so that's my excuse 555. I find I adopt the mannerisms you mention as well: like the bowing, etc. I definitely noticed a much more confrontational vibe in England than Thailand when I visited England 4 years ago.

Why is that? Learning a language takes many months or even years of commitment to studying. Most foreigners don't spend much time in Thailand for it to be worthwhile. Even the Thai government doesn't really encourage long term stay of foreigners. So what's the point of learning a language for what mostly is just a short term stay

its very much true.... when speaking another language you do almost create another identity/persona/character and behave differently.. speaking the local language as a foreigner in Asia (or anywhere really) definitely changes the experience living there and often for the better if you really make the effort to fit in.. some westerners in Asia just don't bother at all to fit in to their local ways, and some do... it does really make a positive difference!

Good description of his own Thai speaking abilities, I say something very similar. A good phrase I use to describe myself is that I can speak "enough" Thai = ผมพูดภาษาไทยพอได้นะครับ Always best to stay humble (like the Thai people themselves when they talk about their own English proficiency even if they seem basically fluent นิดหน่อย ). I find it embarrassing when you do hear people who say they are fluent in a language when they're obviously not. Stay humble, Paddy, as you are & both of you keep up the good work! Great vid!

I know what Paddy means. I’ve only been coming to Thailand for about the last 6 years, but, as a bloke who’s definitely a polyglot, I couldn’t spend a time in a country without learning the language. Thai is my first Asian language, so it’s harder for my farang tongue, but I always say hi and introduce myself in Thai and enquire into the other person’s health, etc. without question the positive response is the best I’ve ever experienced in years of traveling. I cannot stress how much the Thai appreciate you using even the smallest amount of average Thai and how much it breaks the ice.

Do you think you would interview Paddy again before he's going back to Australia? I don't understand why foreigners care about the word "Farang". This word comes from Persian interpreters. In the Ayutthaya period, Europeans began to come in and trade so Ayuthaya used interpreters from Persia and Persians called people from Europe "Frangi". Since then People in Ayutthaya era called western people "Frangi" . Later It became only "Farang". That's it. There is certainly Viral Tiktoker in Thai that she the foreigner almost hits 100k followers and 10m views in a month just because she can speak Thai (มะลิ in TikTok) thats why Thai ppl very appreciated and admired toward foreigner who can speak Thai. Because we knew how hard to practice Thai language especially from some languages that didnt even contained some original Thai sounds, Thai original pronouncing and some orginal thai alphabets.

I have seen paddy’s videos whilst he was interviewing Thai people on the streets. In my opinion, as a native English speaker, it’s very hard to learn and pick up languages that is nasally or phonetically driven and doesn’t have Latin roots. His purchase and proficiency on Thai language is beyond excellent. I’m sure he’s a good in learning in other spheres of his life too.

His Thai is certainly better than mine but I understood everything he said. Far from fluent myself and still learning every day. Self taught and likely like Paddy learned it from self immersion. In my case hearing or speaking in English just made it more difficult for myself to learn Thai. There are no excuses why anyone can not learn.

Here's to you mate your interview with Paddy was 👍 I can appreciate a man who studied the language so much. I mean I,ve lived and stayed there a lot over 28 years. And I,m very average at Thai I do know enough to get bye but probably haven't put enough effort into it. Like they say what you put in is what you get out. I,ve also lived in Vietnam so I suppose it kind of interacts. So many words similar but mean different, it is funny. I,ve nearly married kmer ladies a couple of times. So I guess that's where my problem lye,s I,ve stayed with ladies from Lao, Kmer, Thai, and Vietnam. And can speak a little of each, more so Isaan Thai and more Vietnamese Lao only a little. And kmer same.Although kmer ladies are by far the best and easiest to be around, they are exceptionally gorgeous and very beautiful ladies around ❤️ and what it means 👋

Excellent interview, both of you are very relaxed and I admire his enthusiasm and what he has achieved in terms of learning Thai. Personally, I'm kind of conflicted about whether I should learn Thai. I've been here just over a decade and barely have a grasp of the basics.There's certainly lots of advantages in terms of becoming more integrated into Thai society and understanding the country, and I've certainly been in plenty of situations where it would have reduced confusion and made things easier. On the other hand, one of the best things about leaving my home country (Australia) permanently was I never need to hear about AFL, wine, cars, property investment, and celebrity gossip ever again. Over here whatever is going on in other's conversations in public places, and on TV shows/advertisments just comes background noise to me and doesn't serve as an annoying distraction like it did back home. Is living in a farang bubble a good thing or a bad thing? I don't know the answer, other than I'm content with my current situation (and my wife can translate stuff when necessary). I'd be interested to hear a bilingual speaker's opinions about the pros/cons of learning the language, and if anyone's regretted it. I'm probably missing out on a lot of stuff, but on the other hand plenty of farangs see to live a happy life here without the language skills. Having said all that, I'm really impressed by Paddy and I think there's actually a great opportunity for bridging the cultures via KZbin by those who can speak both languages and appeal to both Farang and Thai audiences.

There is power in not knowing what the couple sitting at the opposite table are talking about at the local coffee shop. We get to drown out all that useless information and background noise. It just doesn't get processed. Whenever I go back to Ireland or any English speaking country it takes me a few weeks to adjust to being bombarded with noise constantly.

@@ThairishTimes Yeah, pre-covid I used to spend a lot of time working on my laptop in coffee shops. Often they would be busy with people around me talking in Thai or Chinese. Didn't bother me a bit and I could concentrate just fine. But if someone was speaking English, my mind would automatically tune in and follow their conversation even if I didn't want to listen.

I am bias because he is Australian . Paddy has that totally chilled relaxed aussie personality that we are known for . Seen a few of his videos and they are must see. Very funny. The best I recall was him going into a thai shop pretending not to speak thai wearing a silly falang tourist T shirt. Then subtitles the comments made about him . Top Top Top 🏅story Pete. BTW loved the "Thai tips with Nune" segment at the start.

The concept of face in Thailand is real, but many falang have this idea that it is the be all and end all of Thai culture. Many of the Thais that I deal with on a daily basis could care less about the concept of face. Example, if they can’t make an appointment, they will tell you straight up, not do the little Kraeng jai song and dance..the idea that Thais won't speak truthfully with you for fear of not wanting to cause a loss of face is also a bit of a stretch. Thais are often "Call it like you see it" types and will speak candidly on things like appearance, weight and other attributes, contradicting the claim that they dont "พูดตรงๆ"..Now, lack of foresight, lack of general motivation and hangups on hierarchy, social status and a "Why worry about it, we may gone tomorrow" mentality...those are probably the most defining cultural markers of Thainess....again, this is all from my own experience..nothing scientific about it and I don't claim to be an expert on Thai culture, unlike many Falang who insist they are all knowing gurus when it comes to this topic, but I do think Falangs tend to overemphasise the concept of เสียหน้า a bit too much.

Thanks for the point on saving face, since some other interviewees on this channel tend generalize us about saving face to the extent of lying, never owning up to mistakes, and even throwing their colleagues under teh bus -- which isn't the case most of the time. Other vices (?) you identified above, are also broadly correct 😀, but of course depends on who you're interacting with.
@Ned88Man
@Ned88Man 2 жыл бұрын
@@pip07200 yea, I find many Thais to be straight forward, often in a very endearing way. I think its belittling to say that "Kraeng jai" dictates every single course of action or thought process of Thai people. It's also really culturally tone deaf to treat any sort of nationality or ethnicity as a monolith.
